See Scott Thompson at work on HGTV's Mountain Life Saturday
Make sure to tune in to HGTV to see Mountain Life Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9 p.m. Filmed in Estes Park this spring, the segment makes its debut next week. Scott helps a couple search for a perch in Estes Park. Here's what HGTV says of the episode:
A couple is ready to search for their dream mountain home in Estes Park, Colorado. They want a feeling of remoteness, yet proximity to town to enjoy fine dining. They both enjoy hiking and have recently taken up rock climbing, so being near a national park is imperative. They challenge their real estate agent to find them the perfect house with south-facing windows, an open floor plan, a naturally landscaped yard and a large kitchen.
President David Evans welcomed members and guests and thanked everyone for coming to the Estes Park Rotary meeting. Greg Jurgens gave the invocation, invoking the ideal of Service Above Self. President Evans directed us in singing Loch Lomond in honor of the Scottish-Irish Festival taking place this week, then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our very active Sojourner Richard Kimple introduced visiting Rotarians, including: Pam Cannell from Fort Worth, Texas, who owns a home here in Estes Park; and Suzy and Eric Blackhurst, former members of our club who are now in morning Rotary. Guests: Heidi Cooper, who will be joining our club, introduced by Tara Moenning; Laura Mastrodi, Rotary exchange student from Brazil, introduced by Susan Fereday; Sue Yowell, Executive Director of the Learning Place, introduced by Karen McClure. Ron Gordon and Tom Maher introduced several guests: Vivian Gordon, Ron’s wife; Marilyn Maher, Tom’s wife; Doctor Robert Quick, today’s speaker; Phyllis Quick, wife of the late Bob Quick, prior member of our club who was one of the original sponsors of the Safe Water Project; Dr. Robert Burkhart, previously head of Eagle Rock School; and Elizabeth Burkhart. Scott Thompson regaled us with a veterinary joke about dogs and porcupines.
Announcements
Dave Evans reported that the visit by former Tuskegee Airman James Harvey to Estes Park last week was a big success. Happy Money from our Rotary club helped to support the event.
President Evans asked Rotary exchange student Laura Mastrodi to tell us about herself. She has been in Estes Park for a month. So far, she has enjoyed playing volleyball, going camping with her host family, and attending a Rockies game. She is finding the weather quite cool here. She hopes to become a lawyer one day. Her visits to our club will be on the first Thursday of each month.
Jim Austin recognized visitor Suzy Blackhurst as a prior president of our club twice. He noted that she was the first female in our Rotary club, and possibly the first in our state.
Suzy Blackhurst announced that she and other morning Rotary members are selling raffle tickets for the Autumn Gold fundraiser. She is hoping for our support.
Dave Evans reported that Sunrise Rotary needs volunteers to help with Autumn Gold on Sept 22-23.
Richard Kimple has moved to Fort Collins after spending his life in Kansas. He says most accidents happen less than 20 miles from home, so he is leaving. Richard donated $100 Happy Money for the time he has spent here with us.
Tara Moenning announced the next shred date will be Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 am to 12 pm at the Presbyterian church. We will be accepting scrap metal as well as paper goods. Old paint and electronics will also be collected that day. There is a new vendor for the recycling. Instead of the big truck, there will be two smaller trucks that can each hold 6000 pounds. The cost of the trucks has gone up, so Tara is asking for donors to share the cost with her and Phil.
There is a card being sent to Sojourner Jess Nielson in North Platte. Anyone who did not previously sign a card should sign it today. We hope he will be able to visit us again in the near future.
Foundation News
Madison Casey, President of the club Rotary Foundation reported on changes to our grants program, necessitated by increased demand and fewer funds. Jack Boatman is the Chairman of the Grants Committee. The suggested process is:
The traditional grant process will not take place this year.
At the last Rotary Foundation committee meeting, a consensus emerged on an alternative plan. This alternative will be discussed and voted on at the Sept. 20 Foundation Board meeting. Members are encouraged to attend at 1:15 pm at the Quality Inn.
If approved as it is now proposed:
There will be approximately $6,000 available for distribution;
Funds must go to nonprofits that are 501C3s serving the Estes Valley;
Grants will match member donations up to $100 with a minimum donation of $50;
Grants will be allocated from Jan.1 to March 31, 2019.
If the Foundation board approves this on Sept. 20, a final vote on the matter will be held at the Club board meeting on Oct. 4, 2018.
Program
Ron Gordon and Tom Maher introduced today’s speaker, Rob Quick of the Centers for Disease Control, who has a passion for clean water andbetter health around the world.
The meeting was adjourned with the 4-Way Test.

Consider donating to India relief
Our club receives varied and multiple requests for funds. Many of these requests are related to natural disasters in foreign countries. Your International Service Committee strives to evaluate the relative merit of these requests, and determine if the club has funds to meet these needs or if other funding options exist.
A current request comes from the Rotary Club of Cochin Midtown, India. Recent extraordinary floods in the state of Kerala have caused colossal devastation to property and the loss of over 400 lives. Over one million people have been displaced. Many Rotary Clubs there are currently providing essentials where more than 1,500 relief camps have been set up.
The Rotary Club of Cochin Midtown has initiated a “Reconstruction Project to provide relief to the economically weak, whose homes were completely destroyed”. They plan to “construct simple houses (about 500 sq. ft.) at Idukki, Kerala, where the flood and rains have caused maximum damage.” The project is being executed as a Rotary Global Grant enabled project of the Rotary Foundation; therefore, all contributions can be routed through the Rotary Foundation.
Because our club has limited funds to meet many requests, the International Service Committee asks you individually, as a member of the Rotary Club of Estes Park, to consider making a donation toward this project.
If you are interested in doing so, please contact Ron Gordon, Chair of the International Service Committee: 970-212-6583 or rgordon@frii.com.
