This week: Two Sides of the Coin:

The Russians' Point of View

Milt Garrett, owner and CEO of Garrett Group International, will be speaking to the club on Thursday, April 4, at our regular noon meeting. Garrett will share some perspectives and points of view of Russians, from his staff and interpreters, Russian university students, and ambassadorial and news sources.

Milt Garrett

Their question to Garrett is, “Why is America mad at us?”  Why are Putin and Russians at odds with America, resulting in international conflicts, sanctions, and election meddling? Why is Russia being so aggressive today? While Putin is acting like a bully, the better question is “why?”

What agreements with the Russians have been kept or not kept since perestroika and the fall of the Berlin Wall by the various U.S. administrations? What about placing missiles in Poland, the U.N. Security Council on Libya, Ukraine turning West, Crimea, and the new U.S. guided missile destroyer.

While he professes that he does not have all the answers about Russia, politically or economically, socially or environmentally, he does encourage questions and dialogue.

Dr. Garrett has clients in seven countries, with an overseas focus on Russia’s economic recovery.  For 41 years as a special consultant helping public and private organizations, he improves their competitive edge and their profits by working on their management systems.

In particular, Garrett has worked across Russia’s 11-time zones from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean, from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, with clients in 226 cities. He is a “Deming Disciple,” a teacher in the International Quality movement, and a Senior State Quality Awards Examiner.  In addition, he is an internationally known consultant and executive coach to CEOs as well as federal, state, and local public officials.

March 28 Meeting Highlights

President Dave Evans called the meeting to order at 12:05. Marsha Yelick greeted club members and guests. Kevin Mullin gave the Invocation on service, strength and wisdom. Pete Sumey led us in singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin” and the Pledge of Allegiance. Scott Thompson introduced Visiting Rotarian Richard Kimple and Rotarians' Guests: Kevin Morris, Richard Kimple’s guest; John Thompson, Trudy Collar’s guest; and Carl Robicheaux, who is being sponsored for membership by Trudy. Scott then told a joke featuring Matt Comstock’s end-of-life choices.

Friendship Card invites merchant partners

Help others while helping yourself: that’s the purpose of the new Friendship Card. Based on a simplified concept of the former Rocky Card, the new Friendship Card will be sold by the Rotary Club of Estes Park for $10. It will open the door to discounts at local restaurants and stores for a calendar year.Net proceeds from the sale of the Friendship Card will be used to support our club's many charitable projects,

Karen Thompson is launching the project with her committee members. They are currently asking business owners to become a part of the Friendship Card initiative. In exchange for discounts, merchants will be listed in promotional materials and display a decal advertising their membership in the program.

The Friendship Card will be available for sale at 8-10 area locations, which will be announced when the card launches in May.
For more information, send an email tot epfriendshipcard@gmail.com. A committee member will promptly follow up.

Rotary Quote of the Week

"April is Maternal and Child Health Month in Rotary... Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. And babies whose mothers die within the first six weeks of their lives are far more likely to die themselves than babies whose mothers survive. As I've traveled around the world as president of Rotary, I've met families for whom these aren't simply tragic statistics. But I've also met people who are devoting themselves to helping mothers and children — and because of them, I'm hopeful.  And because many of those people are Rotarians, I'm also proud."
