The Rwanda Project

Dr. Maria Kidner

Maria Kidner is a doctor of nursing (DNP) and a board certified family nurse practitioner who has specialized over 16 years in cardiology and accumulated over 30 years of nursing practice. She has a passion for international adventures having spent six months in Guyana South America working at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital teaching nursing students. She then spent a year in Rwanda, Africa, again teaching nurses and physicians. From those experiences she developed a leadership program called The LEAP Process. She has a Rwandan team conducting LEAP education. Combining her passion for cardiology and Rwanda, she became the director of the first ever cardiac nursing education program bringing together Team Heart Inc. and the University of Rwanda school of nursing. She joined Rotary International in the Lander club fall of 2021. Upon reading the Rotary International magazine, she was curious to see if she could develop a project to decrease rheumatic heart disease and save lives in Rwanda through nursing education. In addition to her passion of international nursing, Dr. Kidner sits on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the International Council of Nursing  Nurse Practitioner research subgroup. She is a peer reviewer for the Rwanda Medical Journal, speaks nationally and internationally,  a 2018 Leadership Wyoming graduate, and remains active in her professional organizations. She is just published her first book entitled, Successful Advanced Practice Nurse Role Transition that is published by Springer. Maria joins us today to talk about rheumatic heart disease and her project in Rwanda.

Update by President Dennis Gellhaus

My spouse, Robbie, has introduced me to the concept of Hygge; pronounced “hoo-ga”.  It is a Danish word that can’t be defined in one word.  It is rather a sense of contentment, solace, peacefulness.  A warmth of spirit like a warm fire, a good book, or a warm space that is comfortable.

During these long winter days, it is important to embrace your own “Hygge” in order to prepare for Spring and new life that is around the corner.  This serves to regenerate us for service and gives meaning to everything we do.  Find your Hygge!

Thanks for listening.
Dennis
