Tom Chapel on the summit of “The Sharkstooth, RMNP, 2019
Tom is a retired civil engineer living in Estes Park with spouse Donna and two cats. After growing up and attending college in Grand Junction, Tom and Donna relocated to Greeley, then Fort Collins in 1987 to facilitate Tom’s graduate studies at Colorado State University. After an engineering and management career solving soil related problems of local to international scope, Tom retired in 2018 to spend more time on his current avocations: grandchildren, Search and Rescue, fitness, and mountaineering adventures (not necessarily in that order)!
Tom and Donna have been property owners in Estes Park since 2009. In 2016 they built their current residence in Stanley Heights, which forms a perfect base camp for Tom’s most recent obsession to climb all the named and/or ranked peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park (Tom is currently at 210 summits).
One of Tom’s bucket list items has long been a climb of North America’s highest peak: Denali, Alaska (20,310’). In 2014 Tom assembled a team of six climbers for an attempt on Denali’s West Buttress route. A training injury in April 2015 delayed the climb for a year. This presentation is a glimpse into the successful June 2016 adventure by Tom and the team.

“Picture Day“ is this Thursday! We will be getting a new photo of Club members to replace the one on our website which is 10-15 years old. We will take photos just before the start of our meeting. Let’s have a GREAT turn out!
Thank you to Ron Gordon, Chuck & Dale Bonza, Jack Boatman, Longley Parker, Karol Rinehart, Bill Solms and others for quickly providing an opportunity for Club members and others to help out with the horrible humanitarian crisis in Ukraine! Due to the immediate needs, we hope to have most of our funds deployed before the end of the month. You can certainly contribute later.
Reestablishing the Ernie Altick Award: Dave Evans and Kathy Grosbeck are developing a Committee to resume our long-standing Estes Park Rotary Club recognition for deserving members. Their plan is to have the Ernie Altick Program “up and running” by 1 July.
The Rotary Duck Race, an “all hands on deck” event, is quickly coming up to speed. Please find a fun area where you can help! Speak with our Big Duck, Beth Weisberg, Little Duck, Bill Solms, Annie Slack, Scott Thompson, or anyone on the Committee to find areas were you can participate.
Our awesome Club Administration Director, Karol Rinehart, will be placing sign-up sheets at weekly meetings to help organize our projects. Please sign up!

March 10, 2022 Meeting Notes
President Jim Whiteneck called the meeting to order. Bill Smith gave the invocation Jim led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Announcements:
Jim recognized club anniversaries. No birthdays.
Jim said the usual entrance to the Legion is closed for construction next week, so follow the walk around to the front door.
Karol Rinehart said she will make meeting volunteer assignments available for sign up on clip boards to pass around at the meeting. She sent around the Greeter sheet.
Annie Slack said merchant solicitations for duck race prizes starts next week. We need 350 or more. Beth says she has good results phoning. We mailed out donor requests to over 400 merchants but follow up is definitely needed to get results. Chamber of Commerce will help and is covering about 70 businesses.
Gregg Jurgens will organize the duck sorting soon.
Ron Gordon has researched how we can help Ukraine through Rotary. National is setting up a fund to collect our money to forward to vetted recipients for needed items. Ron would like our club members to donate, and hope our foundation will help. He donated $1,000 today to start it off!

The program next week will be the Denali experience, about Alaska.
Today’s Sergeant at Arms is Karen Thompson. Bill Smith stepped up and bid to do it next week.

Phil Moenning was happy that Indiana came out of a slump and overcame a big deficit today to beat Michigan in the first round of the Big 10 basketball tournament.
Carl Robicheaux was happy for Phil.
Scott Robbins was sad for Michigan’s loss.
Scott Thompson told his joke to good response.

Dear Club Members, we need Merchant Prize Volunteers.
Please help us to follow up with businesses we have not heard from since mailing a prize request form to them.
We have approximately 350 merchants who usually gladly give a prize if contacted personally either by phone or in person.
Often they are just busy and forget so a reminder helps them and us. We want these prizes to enhance our Duck Race so there are lots of winners.
Anne Slack can send you a packet of business names, 5, 10 or 20 merchants that you may contact.
She can send you
the Volunteer Instruction sheet,
a list of merchants and
the prize donor form all electronically by email.
Or she can bring it to you in hard copy.
We have eight people signed up to help already.
