ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that provides emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to families around the world who are affected by natural and manmade disasters. Leslie Gamel, ShelterBox Ambassador and Rotarian, will discuss ShelterBox at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, June 18.
In 2012, ShelterBox became Rotary International’s first project partner, enabling more close collaboration between our organizations.
In 2013 alone, ShelterBoxes were provided in the aftermath of a tornado in Oklahoma and a typhoon in the Philippines, and the organization was monitoring needs for immediate housing following flooding in Colorado. In the aftermath of the earthquakes in Nepal, a tremendous need has arisen once again for ShelterBox disaster relief aid.

Foursomes needed; sign up for golf tournament today
What’s better than playing 18 holes of golf on a course with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide? Knowing that your registration fee supports college scholarships for Estes Park seniors. The 19th Annual Rotary Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, slated for Saturday, June 27, hopes to raise $12,000 for three academic scholarships.
To register for the tournament, download forms posted on the Estes Park Rotary Club website at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org. Registration and sponsorship forms are also available at the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course. Golfers with questions should call Bruce Carmichael at 303-946-6349.
The $100 fee includes green fees, cart, participation gift and snacks. Players with an annual 7-day membership at the Estes Park Golf Course have a reduced registration fee of $65.
Golfers also will vie for prizes in contests for putting, most accurate drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Each member of the winning team will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Estes Park Golf Course Pro Shop. Four winners of Closest to the Pin competition on Par 3 holes will take home $100 gift certificates to the Pro Shop. Many other prizes will be awarded.
The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a chip and putt contest prior to the 1 p.m. shotgun start at the 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course.
“This is such an easy and fun way to support scholarships, and we are hoping to attract more golfers than ever this year,” Tournament Chairman Bruce Carmichael said.

Rotary International approved a grant on August 12, 2014 for $168,000 for the recovery of water and septic systems to property owners in Glen Haven after the devastating flood of September 2013. What’s remarkable about this grant it includes funds from Rotarians in India and Brazil which were matched by Rotary International.
37 property owners have been approved for funds with nearly $90,000 of work completed. 70% has been spent on wells and 30% on septic systems.
A committee of people from all three Rotary Clubs in Estes Park has spent over 2,000 man hours to date in working on the contact with the applicants, contractors, and administration of the grant. The uncompleted projects, due to weather and contractor availability, are expected to go on through the end of the year. All of the remaining funds are dedicated the currently approved applicants.

Rotary Quote of the Week
“Every Rotary club should be made a forum before which vital economic and social problems may be fairly and intelligently discussed. Club programs should stimulate thought, widen the horizon, and deepen conviction."
