Building community with our immigrant neighbors

How can we, as a community, communicate with our immigrant neighbors? How can we get “past the doorways and into the kitchens”—the heart and soul of the lives of our immigrant neighbors?

Leonor Kennell, the Estes Valley Library English Language Learning Outreach Coordinator and parent educator for Spanish-speaking families for EVICS (Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success), will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the regular noon meeting.

Kennell plans to summarize the Estes Valley Library’s efforts to reach out to English language learners and immigrants that live in our community, through current and future programming and acquisition of appropriate materials. In addition, she will highlight the library’s partnership with Intercambio, a program based in Boulder which provides materials for English language learning. Finally, she hopes to communicate how we can go beyond the typical programming and events that we do in our community.

With over 30 years of teaching experience in a variety of regular, special education and bilingual programs, Kennell also coordinated an adult education program, in collaboration with the National Institute for Adult Education of Mexico, which provided the opportunity for adults from Mexico to complete their primary and secondary education. The majority of her professional experience has involved working with young immigrant children and their families, which prepared her well for her current role.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary clubs have been serving communities worldwide for more than a century. Rotary clubs around the world initiate projects that address critical issues such as conflict resolution, hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park meets Thursdays at the Rodeway Inn in Estes Park. Visitors interested in learning more about Rotary and its programs are welcome to attend. Buffet is served at 11:30 a.m., the Rotary business meeting opens at noon, and the program begins at 12:30 p.m.

Rotary returns to The Stanley for Nov. 3 meeting

In his invocation, Virgil Holtgrewe reminded us to be grateful for life.

Jim Austin introduced our many guests.

Jay Harroff introduced our program with style and humor.

The Stanley's new general manager, Ron Morin, and Marnie Cullen, John's younger sister, provided an overview of the hotel's past, present and future.

Thor introduces Ron Morin to one of our club's traditions: the gift of a book to the children's library to thank each program presenter.
November 3, 2016 meeting notes

President Thor Homme called the meeting to order in the Concert Hall at the Stanley Hotel. Virgil Holtgrewe gave the invocation. His parting advisory, “I am Virgil Holtgrewe and I approve of this message,” was met with a burst of laughter. Dave Evans led us in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in honor of the Cubs’ win in the World Series. The Pledge of Allegiance followed. Thank you to Ward Nelson for bringing the flag, lectern and sound equipment. Jim Austin presided over guest introductions. Visiting Rotarians were Bob Berman and Chuck Levine from the EP morning club and Jack Dinsmoor from the evening club. It was a pleasure to have many proud members introduce their spouses who came to enjoy the luncheon and program. Guests of Rotarians included Chris Schotts and Douglas Mann who attended with Scott Thompson. Elizabeth Fogarty of Visit Estes Park also came to enjoy the program.

Announcements
  • Scott Thompson encouraged members to sign up for dinner on a Tuesday night to enjoy some time with our visiting student Sander Andersen.
  • Bob Brunson has been ill with pneumonia in the hospital. He expects to be discharged tomorrow.
  • Madison Casey’s wife, Martie, is doing well after back surgery.
  • Thor announced that Ron Randall, Assistant District Governor, will attend next week’s Rotary meeting.

  • Scott Thompson advised that Nov. 10 is National Philanthropy Day. Rotary has been nominated for an award. Members are encouraged to come support Rotary and promote the Duck Race at the YMCA at 4 p.m.
  • Bruce Brown invited members to the Salud Open House Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
Program
Jay Harroff thanked John Cullen for today’s luncheon and the opportunity to visit the historic musical venue where we are holding today’s meeting. He introduced John’s sister, Marnie, and General Manager Ron Morin, who were co-hosting us. Jay gave a brief history of Rotary’s relationship with the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. Rotary is fortunate to have such a generous partner as we continue to provide service to the town. The Stanley has donated $2,500 each year for the past four years to support the golf tournament, and $5,000 a year for the Duck Race. After giving a brief account of the history of The Stanley over the past few decades, Jay turned the program over to Ron Morin, General Manager of the Stanley Hotel, who has a real passion for historic hotels. Ron detailed the expanded facilities now available after renovations and new construction. He described the many programs and innovative ideas the Stanley is putting into place for the widespread interests of the modern visiting public. The Stanley Website is available for additional information for those who were unable to attend the presentation.

Dear Rotary Club,

Thank you for donating the pumpkins to the Elementary School. We loved them! Our class did pumpkin activities all day! We wrote about them, we painted pictures of our pumpkins, and even did science with pumpkins! Did you know that pumpkins float? And they have more than 100 seeds inside!

Love,
Ms. Vik's Kindergarten Class
Quote of the Week: 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation

"In many ways, our Rotary Foundation is the foundation of Rotary as we know it. It has created a mechanism for cooperation and partnership among clubs and between Rotary and other organizations; it has enabled us to be ever more ambitious in our work and to reach for goals of historic proportions, such as the eradication of polio. It is impossible to quantify the good that has been done over the last century as a result of The Rotary Foundation."
