ROTARY SOCIAL – “WINE AND CHEESE”
You and your spouse or guest (possible future Rotarian?) are invited to a casual social on Saturday, January 11, 2020. The gathering will take place from 5 – 7 p.m. at Scott and Karen Thompson’s home, 714 Sanborn Drive (in Carriage Hills). Please bring an appetizer to share and your own beverage.
President Doug Mann called the festive meeting to order at 12:05. Mike Connolly and Santa served as greeters. Dennis Gellhaus gave an inspiring invocation, and Doug led the Pledge of Allegiance. Karol Rinehart, the coordinator of today’s spectacular luncheon, introduced Santa, who invited us to join him in an interactive recitation of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Ably overcoming a false start caused by a pop-up ad, Scott Thompson shared a moving story about a little girl’s Christmas gift to her father. Jay Harroff introduced our many guests, including members' spouses: Jane Harroff, Lois Sumey, Vivian Gordon, Marty Casey, Pat Newsom, Jean Austin, Chris Benight, Phil DuChateau and Leslie Van der Werf. We welcomed our other guests: Lanty McCartney; Guy’s mother-in-law; Karol’s guest, Jim; and Trudy’s guest, Joy.
Announcements
Karen Thompson reminded us that there is no Duck Race meeting in December and that she REALLY needs a Little Duck. Get Quackin’ and volunteer.
She added that all club members can play a role in the largest fundraiser of the year by helping solicit merchant prizes and sponsors. Prizes are a big part of the fun, and sponsors make the major prizes possible. So, waddle up and have some fun!
Karol Rinehart presented gifts to Jon Thomason and his three employees who cook, bake and serve our weekly feasts.

Program
Madison Casey introduced our program, a selection of Christmas favorites accompanied by singing duo Great Blue (Shirl Lawrence and Steve Kaplan). We sent a short film clip to Jack Overly with our warmest get-well wishes. Karol presented Shirl and Steve with a holiday floral arrangement as a thank you gift.
Final Announcements
Anne Slack asked that we all let Jack focus on getting well, which means don’t call or visit him. Send a card and prayers instead.
Doug Mann thanked Karol for arranging a great event and for making our weekly meetings go smoothly.
Doug encouraged us all to be generous with Happy Money dollars next month, as the collection will help offset our exchange student’s special end-of-year trip with students from the region.
Doug ended the meeting with the reflection that his first six months as president have been a fun ride and that he is excited about all the club will do in 2020.
