Nicky's or Zoom? The choice is yours!

Your club is back at Nicky's! Several club members gathered at Nicky's for lunch and our meeting last week and many more used the Zoom link to participate remotely. So, the choice of how to attend is yours.

HOWEVER, if you're going to join the group at Nicky's you will need to R.S.V.P. Send Karol and email at kj.rinehart@centurylink.net BEFORE 5 p.m. Tuesday (July 21). This will be the "drill" going forward, so mark your calendars so you remember to R.S.V.P. to Karol before Tuesday at 5 p.m. every week we meet.

Details for Nicky's from Karol: Attendance limited to 25, food will be served rather than a buffet, price is still $15. Those attending must have a meal, as there is a restriction on the number that can attend. Please arrive as close to 11:30 as possible so meals can be served before the meeting begins.

Be sure to watch your email for important information on when, where and how your committee will meet this week. Our fourth meeting of the each month is set aside for committees to meet, so be prepared. When you paid your dues, you should have submitted a Committee Sign Up form and your current year commitments appear at the bottom on your newsletter. If you haven't signed up for a committee or committees, here they are, with the names of the committee chairs. It's never too late to join a committee!

While not a formal committee, Rick Taylor welcomes your ideas for future programs.

Update from President Bill Solms

Great meeting last Thursday with Matt’s presentation on how we are impacted by electronic media and how new inventions are affecting our communications, like smart phones are bought by one billion people less than 8 years after their first introduction!

We also heard Brittney Woodrum’s presentation on her ShelterBox fundraiser; if you would like to support her fundraiser, please indicate so on the 23d.  She climbs Longs Peak on Monday, the 20th.  I hope she can tell us about it.

I look forward to hearing good news concerning Gary Hazelton and Ward Nelson.

Due to time constraints we missed Happy Dollars and all the related fun, so I will make that up to you this coming Thursday the 23d.  I promise the trivia question coming from the Rotarian magazine will be much easier this week.

Thank you, Karol, for treating us with cake for birthday celebrations, including mine!!  I will start Thursday’s meeting as usual and adjourn after announcements, Happy Dollars, and any other proper business in order to allow our committees to meet.

While committees take the opportunity to meet, please do not forget to send me a link so I can attend if possible.  Right now I only know that the Foundation Committee meets at 1:30 that day.  Scott has offered to host a committee meeting online, so contact him if you need him to host. If more than one committee needs a host at the same time, we will find other hosts to help out.  Also, there is room at Nicky’s for two meetings in separate rooms.

Don’t forget to call Karol before 5 pm on Tuesday if you plan to physically attend Thursday and also attendance includes the cost of lunch.

Stay healthy,
Bill

Duck Race Festival will be virtual

With a mixture of regret and excitement, the Estes Park Duck Race Festival Committee has decided to host a virtual experience on Saturday, Sept. 19 instead of an in-person event.

“We surely feel regret because the global pandemic forces us to find a new way to move forward safely with the 32nd Annual Estes Park Duck Race,” said ‘Big Duck’ Karen Thompson. “But as soon as we decided to have a virtual Duck Race, we started to see so many new and thrilling possibilities that we are now very excited!”

Details are being developed that will ensure the race is accessible online, entertaining for those who tune into the livestream, and rewarding for the 67 Participating Organizations that are busy selling Duck Adoptions.

The virtual event will feature a live Tail Spin Drawing of the major prizes and hundreds of Duck Buck certificates for local merchants. The Major Prizes include:
  • Cash Prize: $2,000
  • Cash Prize:  $1,000
  • Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at the Pine Lodge on Whitefish River near Glacier National Park
  • Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at the Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone National Park
  • Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite National Park.
All travel prizes include extras, which vary between the resorts. Travel prizes have been provided by Delaware North, the lodging and concession corporation that includes the Ridgeline Hotel in Estes Park.

“Delaware North has graciously extended the expiration dates for the travel prizes to 2022, which means the winners will have extra time to plan a safe trip,” Thompson said.

Duck adopters will have the chance to win hundreds of prizes valued at $20 and up. The difference is that this year the merchants don't have to donate prizes. Most of the prizes, called Duck Bucks, will be provided by the Duck Race Committee and generous donors and can be redeemed at local businesses.

“We think it's time to help our merchants, too,” Thompson said. “These are different times, to be sure, but this situation has given us the chance to ‘think outside the nest’ and do some things differently. The Duck Race volunteers will do everything we can to make this the very best Duck Race ever!”
July 16 Meeting Notes

President Bill Solms called the meeting to order, welcoming those who attended at Nicky’s and those who joined using Zoom. He extended birthday wishes to Gregg Jurgens and himself; wedding anniversary congratulations to the Galcovskis and the Lees; and Rotary anniversary kudos to Karen McClure, Sandy Lasson and Guy Van der Werf. Jennifer Comstock gave an invocation on gratitude for the opportunity to come together again and share fellowship. Bill led the Pledge and then introduced Visiting Rotarian Richard Kimple. Scott Thompson again regaled the club with his humor.

Announcements
  • Karen Thompson shared some BIG DUCK RACE NEWS. The Saturday, Sept. 19 race will take place virtually, not in-person. She said it was a difficult decision by the Duck Race Committee, but necessary for the safety of all. She invited tech-savvy volunteers to help with the planning and execution of the virtual race.
  • Bill shared details of meetings at Nicky’s. In-person attendance is limited to 25; lunch will be served and will cost $15. Anyone wishing to attend in person must contact Karol Rinehart to R.S.V.P. before 5 p.m. every Tuesday prior to a meeting to reserve a spot.
  • Next week’s meeting will be a Club Assembly. We will have a brief meeting and then adjourn for committee work. Scott Thompson can host one Zoom meeting for a committee. Other space at Nicky’s is available for in-person meetings. Each committee chair will contact his/her committee members regarding time/place of the committee meetings.
  • Our Foundation Board will meet at 1:30 on Thursday, July 23. Madison will email his board regarding location.
  • Bill provided an update from Kris Hazelton on Gary’s health. Gary will have surgery for his pancreatic cancer on Friday, and is expected to remain in the hospital for a week. Within a month, Gary will start his second round of chemotherapy. Please send positive thoughts, prayers, good wishes.
Nominating Committee
Bill announced that the Nominating Committee has slated Anne Slack as co-chair of the Membership Committee and John Thomason as Sergeant-at-Arms for this Rotary year.

Program #1
Bill introduced Brittney Woodrum, Rotary Peace Fellowship candidate and ShelterBox Ambassador, to explain her fundraising campaign for ShelterBox. Brittney is climbing all 58 of Colorado’s Fourteeners hoping to raise $1,400 for each summit completed. She will climb Longs Peak July 20, and is seeking individual donations and club sponsorships. To learn more, visit https://www.shelterboxusa.org/fourteeners/

Program #2
Rick Taylor introduced club member Matt Comstock, who provided a fascinating, data-driven program on technology and advertising.  Matt demonstrated the pace of change and how it is affected by technological advances and the willingness of consumers to hop onto new technology. He also shared insights into how the world will change as a result of COVID-19, which he characterized as a massive catalyst for technology adoption. Because we tend not to go back to what once was, Matt predicts the new normal will include change in access to healthcare, work from home models, and the spread of social awareness and societal influence.

Adjournment
Karol surprised our President with a candlelit cake to celebrate his birthday. Bill thanked everyone for their good wishes, and then adjourned the meeting at 1 p.m. with The Four-Way Test.

Duck Bucks campaign seeks donors' dollars

Have you been looking for a way to support Estes Park businesses as they recover from recent COVID-19 closures while also spreading some Duck Race love?

It’s as easy as calling or emailing ‘Big Duck 2020’ Karen Thompson to make a donation to the Duck Bucks Campaign. Instead of simply asking local merchants to donate prizes for the 2020 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race, the planning committee has hatched a fundraising effort to give back to the merchants. Race fans will still win hundreds of prizes at the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race on Saturday, Sept. 19, but funds for many of the prizes will come from a combination of event budget reallocations and donations from sponsors and Estes Valley residents.

"We want to be sure to include everyone who wants to contribute, though, even if you have not donated in the past," said  Prize Committee member Beth Weisberg. "We need your donations more than ever this year."

The 2020 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race is supporting local merchants who donated prizes in 2017, 2018 and 2019 by purchasing gift cards (Duck Bucks) that winners can redeem at the businesses.

“We encourage community support of the Duck Bucks campaign, because it’s time to show our Estes Park businesses how much they are appreciated,” Thompson said.

To donate, or for more information, contact Thompson at bigduck@epduckrace.org or by phone at 970-590-9942.

Rotary Quote of the Week

"So much of society has sorted itself into highly age-segregated arrangements. Rotary and other like-minded groups are resisting that trend and creating spaces where people of all generations can work together for the greater good."
