Loren Shriver participated in three NASA missions and spent more than 386 hours in space.
He twice served as mission commander, including on STS-31 (space shuttle Discovery) in 1990, where the five-person crew deployed the Hubble Space Telescope and conducted a variety of middeck experiments. During the mission, the crew also used two IMAX cameras to record new vantage points of Earth’s features as Discovery reached a then-record altitude of 333 nautical miles. The footage appeared in the 1994 IMAX film, “Destiny in Space.”
Selected as an astronaut in 1978, Shriver’s first NASA mission came in 1985 as pilot of STS-51C. The Department of Defense-initiated mission saw the crew deploy a modified Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) vehicle from Discovery’s payload bay. In 1992, Shriver commanded his final NASA mission, STS-46, aboard Atlantis. During the eight-day mission, the crew deployed the European Retrievable Carrier satellite and conducted the first Tethered Satellite System test flight – a joint project between NASA and the Italian Space Agency.

Welcome to Summer! It is finally hot here. Enjoy it as it won’t last long.
It was hot and humid on Edisto Island, SC. We did have a lovely time with family and friends. I spent time reading Bylaws, emails and past Board meeting notes to catch myself up to date. First requirement is establishing a Nominating Committee for next year’s Officers and Directors. Be sure to let me know if you are interested in holding a position on our club’s Board of Directors. There are lots of opportunities to serve.
I followed the news about the Rooftop Parade. Again, I thank Ruby for participating and anyone else in our club that was there.
I could not join our Thursday meeting as Gordon and I were flying home but I checked in with Jack Ford afterwards I was sad to miss both Ex. Dir. Stan Hilkey’s presentation and Kathy Groesbeck's report as I heard they were good.
I want to start advertising our Speakers so we might stimulate more community involvement with the consequence of increased membership. This was an idea of Past President Karen Thompson but we could never make it happen. Part of the reason for that is we have no Publicity Director. If you might be interested in that position, please let me know. A Publicity Director would handle newspaper announcements, Facebook and Instagram notices as well as other method of presenting our club to the public.

Jack Overly
Jack died early this Sunday morning (7/14/24) after a long downhill battle. While we will miss him, I know he was ready to leave this world and join his beloved wife in Heaven. Jack lived a good life raising four children with Mary. He worked hard and provided them with a loving home. He was proud to be a Rotarian and helped to organize the Duck Race. He missed Estes Park but could no longer breathe well at our altitude. Jack’s service will be announced as soon as details are known.

Rotarian Stories This week Kathy Groesbeck told us about herself. Transferred from Topeka, Kansas. She has three kids and seven grandkids. She has been President of the club, President Elect, Little Duck, and Big Duck. She was District Governor for our rotary district for 4 years. She is a Paul Harris member for 8+ years, donating her $1,000 every year on her birthday. She shared many of her favorite memories as a member.

Shredathon/Estes Recycles Day Report
The total money added to our Scholarship Fund will be $1,743.60. Despite having perfect weather, the attendance was down for shredding. The total attendance was 429 cars versus over 500 last year. We will know more once we have the data on how many went through each station, but we didn’t have the number of cars in the queue that we had last year. Was this because we were more efficient? Or, were our numbers simply down? Answers to these questions will follow.
A huge “thank you” goes out to the following Rotarians:
Bill Smith and Scott Thompson who set up very early, then returned to haul it all back to where it belonged.
Shred truck helpers who greeted each car and emptied all the boxes and bags—David Batey, Jack Boatman, Madison Casey, Grant Delbeqc, Jim Jonell, Dave Scott, and Guy Van der Werf;
Scott Robbins and Phil Moenning for tearing down all those cardboard boxes—an entire dumpster’s worth, and Scott for getting in the dumpster and stomping them all down—(we missed you, Jim Austin);
Karol Rinehart for her usual gracious collection of funds from our customers, and keeping all the dogs happy with her “doggie treats” (a first here, one customer ate a dog biscuit!);

Fundraising for the Scholarship Fund - Update
Thanks to everyone who has signed up for the Shred-a-thon on Saturday, August 10th.
The sign-up sheet for the John Denver Tribute Concert volunteers is now circulating. Here we need people for various tasks that are spread out over the noon to 3:30 pm time frame, and then for the 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm time frame. Clean-up help from 8:30 pm until 9 pm would be appreciated as well. Update: We still need volunteers for the John Denver Tribute Concert, especially ushers.
Update: Sponsors, and donations in memory of someone, are always welcome. These help to defray the costs and allow more of the proceeds to go to the Scholarship Fund.

August 22 Update:
John Denver Tribute Concert, August 31st, 2024, at the YMCA Ruesch Auditorium, doors open at 4 pm, Random and True performing from 5 pm – 6 pm, and Brad Fitch and his Tropicowboy Band performing from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.
The concert has been designated as the “Social” for the 5th Thursday month of August. Rotarians may purchase tickets for $35 until Friday, August 30th—they will be $40 at the door. They may sit in unclaimed seats in sections A and G, or in any general admission sections. Another alternative would be to be a sponsor—for $100 you would get two general admission tickets and have your name listed as a sponsor. To socialize with other Club members we will gather on the deck during intermission.
We are still looking for volunteers to usher: 4 pm to 6:30 pm.
