Come to the Club Annual Meeting

Jack and Guy agree that Thursday’s meeting should be a fun event, decorating the solar panels we will ship to Ukraine. They still need to have a conversation about what questions they will ask the participants to discuss while the panels are being decorated.

Our program on October 16th will be held in person, but a Zoom link will be provided.
Click on the link below to be admitted.

Meeting Notes 10-9-25

President Jack Ford called the meeting to order.
Invocation by Annie Slack.
Jack led the Pledge of Allegiance.
We sang “America”, accompanied by Madison Casey.

Program:

We had the guest program first since our speakers had a 1:00 meeting with the State.
Upper Thompson Sanitation District function and news were presented by Suzanne Jurgens, District Manager, and Matt Allen, Operations Manager with Sue Doylen, Board Vice Chair and Secretary.

Guests of Rotarians

Guests were Lauren Hewson and Joe Bonness.  Lauren is the daughter of Suzanne and Gregg Jurgens.

Announcements:
  • Annie Slack says Duck Race job sign-up is coming next week. They want to get staffing settled so they know our capabilities.
  • Annie reported on office nominations for next term. We now have Youth Projects volunteers, but we still need President Elect. She said two people could split the job. She cannot present the slate for reading and voting until we have the President Elect filled.
  • Beth Weisberg said she is collecting in advance from us for Bright Christmas, so she can tell them what size family we can sponsor.
  • Scott Robbins said that last year Beth found Ember Restaurant to have a super Thanksgiving Buffet at a great price, and that reservations are filled the first day. That day is coming, and she invites Rotarians without plans to join her. A sign-up list was circulated.
  • It is the monthly Shelter Box Day, and Jim Austin made his donation to be joined by members.
  • Dale Bonza reminded us that it is time to make donations to our favorite charities, which our Foundation will match up to $200.  Take a form for each donation.
Happy Money:
  • Pete Sinnott is delighted that his Estes Dementia Day Center received a $100,000 donation.
  • Tom Maher said that at least with the government shutdown, getting into the National Park is easy with the reduced staff. He took advantage of that to take his daughter to the Park last week.
  • He is also pleased to see the number of couples as members in our club, which increases our numbers and effectiveness.
  • Ben Van der Werf is happy for his 7th wedding anniversary with Val.
  • Carl is happy that Ben remembered his anniversary after forgetting to acknowledge his dad’s birthday.
  • Annie Slack is happy for good attendance today, and that some of our members are recovering well—Carol Whiteneck and Ron Gordon and remember to check in with Virgil Holtgrewe.
  • Jack read a letter from Ron Gordon. They love their new place in Loveland, and Ron will keep his membership in our club.
Adjournment

We concluded with the four-way test.

Duck Race Committee Meeting Report
September 25, 2025

Race Day 2025

Chuck Bonza led our first Duck Race Committee (DRC) meeting.  Kathy Groesbeck took minutes.  This report is a summary only.  If you would like the actual meeting minutes, please email anneslack@aol.com.

Chuck began the meeting by thanking all the members of our Rotary who had accepted leadership positions.

Dale Bonza: Publicity
Annie Slack: Event Day Coordinator
Beth Weisberg: Volunteer Coordinator
Jeff Lindberg (non-Rotarian) and Lawrence Trifiletti: IT Software
Chris Davis: Duck Wrangler
Suzy Blackhurst: Major Prizes/Sponsors
Heidi Schweikert: Lucky Duck, followed by Suzanne Jurgens for safety (both non-Rotarians)
Merchandise Sales: Jill Zerhan
Sarah Walsh: Merchant Prize Coordinator
Carl Robicheaux: River Marshall/Sheriff
Ben Van der Werf: Finish Line
Rick Life: Starting Line
Larry Williams: Participating Organization Coordinator

A clipboard will be passed around weekly for members to sign up under these Team Leaders.  The Big4Ducks (Chuck Bonza, Suzy Blackhurst, Beth Weisberg, and Annie Slack) have tried to determine the number of helpers needed for each task.  Once all the spaces are filled, the clipboard will stop rotating.

Chuck listed the tasks the Big4 have been working on, and asked for the Committee’s approval.
  • The brand name will be: The Great Estes Park Rotary Duck Race
  • October will be a “design month” to determine the Duck Race (DR) budget, which will require approval from the Board and the DRC.
  • The Finish Line will be located at the Visitor’s Center.
  • The Start Line will be somewhere between Filbey Court and the Performance Park area.
  • There will be two Flights of ducks, with half the number of purchased adoptions in each heat.
  • The number of prizes available will determine the number of ducks in the final race. Ducks will be collected from the winners of each Flight up to half the prize total.
  • The final heat will have as many ducks as there are Grand Prizes and Merchant Prizes.
Flights will begin at
#1: 11:00 AM
#2: 12:30 PM
#3:   2:00 PM
These times may be adjusted depending on the river’s flow and audience interest.

Various themes and branding were discussed.

Larry Williams will work with Participating Organizations. Each organization must provide one adult volunteer to assist the DR and adopt a minimum of 25 ducks to be eligible for the 2027 DR.
Kick-Off Night is expected to happen at the end of February or in early March.

Riverwalk considerations included:
  • Number of tables needed by Organizations
  • Placement of a stage, food trucks
  • Barriers for the parking lot by the Visitor’s Center
  • Placement of entertainment must be away from the Finish Line to allow those volunteers wrangling ducks to hear each other.
Suzy Blackhurst is handling grants.

Sponsors are being considered, and names will be announced when these are determined.

Major Prizes will be determined later.

Team Leaders will be asked to report their progress at subsequent DRC meetings

The next DRC meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 13, immediately following the Club meeting at the Legion.

The Rotary Club Board
Needs YOU!!

Thank you to all our members who have stepped forward to assume Officer or Directorate positions. I think you will find the work very rewarding.

We are still searching for a President Elect Nominee (PEN). Remember this position can be filled by a former President, two members alternating responsibilities, or even three members each taking a quarter term of Summer, Fall, and Spring.

The Youth Services Directorate was filled by three willing members. But now, we need a Sergeant-at-Arms as Jim Whiteneck had to step down due to personal reasons.

If you are interested, please contact Guy Van der Werf for the President Elect Nominee position at gvanderwerf@estesvalley.net. Contact me for the Sergeant-at-Arms position at anneslack@aol.com.

Thanks a million!
Annie

Have Fun While Helping Ukrainian School Children
At the Oct. 16 Meeting, we will have solar panels for you to decorate with pictures and positive messages. The panels will be sent to Ukraine for children to use when the electricity goes out, which it often does. They use them to charge their phones and other USB chargeable devices.

We will bring markers. Please bring your good thoughts and creative ability. See you there!

PUMPKIN DAY AT EP ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is OCTOBER 24

Noon Rotary's annual give-away of pumpkins at the Elementary School is one of our most fun events of the year.  Come help set up 510 pumpkins in the Elementary School parking lot to turn it into a pumpkin patch, and watch the elementary school kids' excitement as they come out class by class to pick out their own pumpkins to take home (free!).  Pumpkin Day this year will be on Friday, October 24.  Please show up at EP Elementary School's parking lot (in front of the school) at 8:10 a.m.  to help unload all of the pumpkins from Sue Fereday's flatbed truck.  And then stay to watch the fun.

Contact Beth with any questions or to RSVP, at weisberg.family@verizon.net .  You don't need to RSVP, though -- it's fine to just show up on October 24 and help out.
