Scott’s Joke: An Irish joke on how to get free beer… beware of anyone who tries this al Elk Fest! Two Irish guys go into a bar and question the bartender: “Are there 2 or 4 pints in a quart?” He answers: “Two.” They are seated and the waiter comes to get their order, They order two pints of beer. Then they tell the waiter the bartender will cover the expense. When the waiter questions this, one of the Irishmen shouts to the bartender: “Two pints, right?” to which he replies: “Yes!” (By the way, this scam was not covered by our speaker) Jim Austin reported on Shelter Box: From our $10 contributions collected each month, he put a check for $1,000.00 in an envelope to mail to Rotary International. Welcome to our Exchange Student: - President Karen Thompson, Jim Jonell, Chris Davis, and Sunrise Rotary President Jean Rissmiller formally welcomed Lucia (Lucy) Miano to Rotary and presented her with her official Rotary Badge.
- Sunday Lucy celebrated her 17th birthday, so we all sang a jovial Happy Birthday to her.
- Jean gave a summary of the Rotary International exchange program.
- Lucy is part of the Inbound Exchange Student program.
- There is also an Outbound Exchange Student program.
- Rotary is at work at Estes Park High School to initiate an Interact Club.

Program: Annie introduced Jennifer Hahnke, the current Education & Outreach Manager for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Northern Colorado & Wyoming. Jennifer made a very moving Power Point presentation covering internet fraud and scams using data from records kept by the BBB and published through Scam Tracker. Scammers focus their strategies on certain ages of potential scam victims, tailor the subject matters of their scams on these targeted potential victims, and exploit the emotions of : vulnerability, loneliness, and panic in their potential victims to trigger the potential victim to wire funds or authorize financial transactions that cannot be challenged, reversed, or successfully prosecuted. Knowing the information available from Scam Tracker allows one to better fight fraud by avoiding known scams and to be able to recognize the signs of a potential fraud. Scammers want your personal information to achieve their goals such as accessing retirement funds, bank accounts, credit transactions, etc. According to the BBB, Scam Tracker prevented more than $21.2 million in losses from scamming operations during 2022. This application can be accessed at BBB.org/ScamTraker or BBBMarketplaceTrust.org/RiskReport. Follow their directions or use the Scam Tracker database for information on past/current scams being attempted worldwide. Type in the suspected scam and the applicable zip code. The application will tell you which scams are being reported in that area. Impersonation of legitimate companies is a favorite scam tactic. At the top of the impersonation list was Amazon with PayPal, the U. S. Postal Service, Norton, Walmart, and Medicare close behind among other well-known companies. Jennifer not only focused on the financial losses caused by scams, but also the non-financial losses such as loss of time, loss of self-confidence or peace of mind, loss of personal information, potential earnings, and loss of financial/credit health. If you are targeted: stay calm, never reply directly, go to the known legitimate source for help and assistance.
