Rickey Frierson
 
Dr. Rickey Frierson has spent the last 15 years presenting internationally and domestically on issues of social justice, diversity and inclusion and underrepresented  student success within higher education. Dr. Frierson’s research interest focuses on institutional accountability and effectiveness in minority success and completion at predominantly white, public institutions. Dr. Frierson takes pride in assisting administrators, educators and institutions in examining pro active strategies to create efficient and fruitful educational experiences for their diverse students, staff and faculty.  He has published articles, submitted book reviews, and has written book contributions that all stem around efficiencies of education.

  • Welcome to February-the Valentine’s Day month!
  • We are excited to welcoming Dr. Ricky Frierson to the Club this week.
    • He is a professor at CSU.
    • He has worked with several of our club members including Bill Solms and Dennis Gellhaus over the past year.
    • We hope to be able to find positive ways to do good for our minority communities.
  • With our continued concern for COVID-19, we are looking for ways to help minimize the risk.
    • We will continue to offer a Zoom option to our meetings.
    • Please pass along any other suggestions.
January 27, 2022 Meeting Notes
 
President Jim Whiteneck called the meeting to order.  
He thanked Dennis Gelhaus for filling in for him last week when he was home with Covid.
Today is Committee Meeting Day.  The one committee meeting today is Membership.

Announcements:
Annie Slack, Scholarship Chair, read a letter from our scholarship recipient Rachel Calvin.  
  • She won the Thorp Scholarship for 4 years and is studying Interior Design. 
  • She writes that she is really enjoying school and she sent two illustrations of her design work.
Carl Robicheaux, Foundation President had several announcements:
  • He was pleased to announce that Karol Rinehart has made a sizable donation to fund new scholarships which is a big boost to our mission to help our sutdents.  Thank you, Karol!
  • Previously all from our club have been welcome to review the scholarship applications to choose our recipients.  
    • The files reside at the Library to be checked out by our members.  
    • The foundation feels this process needs to be formalized to a Scholarship Committee to review these so we know who will review them and who is seeing these applicants’ private information. 
    • Now, we have Annie Slack, Tara Moenning, Jim Whiteneck and Carl.   We need 2-3 more to help.   
  • Carl presented a Pete Sinnott wooden bowl to Jim Whiteneck as a new major sponsor for the Golf Tournament.

  • Barry Hannigan has applied for membership, sponsored by Mel Rueppel. 
  • References are:
    • Nate Dick whom Jennifer Comstock knows through the Newcomers Club
    • Madison Casey from the piano music community.  
  • The Board has approved him and the next step is for his bio to be published in The Spoke, and a vote.
Jim said we still need more meeting scribes
  • Barry Hannigan has volunteered to serve  with Pete Sumey and Madison Casey.  
  • We need at least one more so each person only has to do this monthly.  
  • Gail Corrigan volunteered today, so we are set!  
The Club Board meets Tuesday at 5:00 at the Library, hopefully for one hour.   It will also be zoomed.
Duck Race Committee meets Thursday Feb. 3 at 5:00 via Zoom.

Club Anniversary:  Sara Walsh for 10 years.

Happy Money:
  • Bill Solms was very happy. 
    • He wanted to add to what The Spoke omitted that his Happy Money was for Scott Thompson doing title work for him for no fee, so Bill gave $20 to us.  
    • Annie does a great job publishing The Spoke.  
    • The busiest person is the one you call on and Carl is doing a great job as Foundation President, Duck Committee, and liaison to the Chamber of Commerce.  
    • He was happy for Karol’s scholarship.
  • Longley Parker, Annie Slack, and Jim Whiteneck were all happy for Karol’s Scholarship.
  • Beth Weisberg was happy for
    • Karol’s Scholarship
    • Jim is back and well.
  • Dennis Gellhaus was happy that
    • Jim is back
    • his oldest son’s 39th birthday.
  • Carl Robicheaux was happy for
    • all our members in our club
    • Bill Solms gives money every week.
  • Wayne Newsom is very happy to be back in Estes Park.
Ron Gordon referred us to the photos in The Spoke to see our Bangladesh Model Village we are sponsoring.  He will report to us when he has news.

Duck Race Committee Meeting
February 3, 2022
5:30 PM by ZOOM
Announcement:
  • There will be a Duck Race Committee meeting this coming Thursday (February 3) at 5:00 p.m. on Scott’s Zoom.  
    • The meeting link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/ 7985707369.
  • This meeting will start with a presentation from the Tech Group about
    • exciting developments with our online duck adoption system for the 2022 Race
    • will last between 20 – 30 minutes, depending on questions.
  • The Tech discussion will be followed by our regular Duck Race Committee meeting
    • Lots to report by our division chairs
  • We will start at 5:00 p.m. and expect to end at 6:30 rather than the usual 6:00 p.m.  
  • Please attend if at all possible – we need every one of you!

Karol Rinehart Scholarship

Karol Rinehart has given money to our Foundation to establish a scholarship with the following requirements:
  • the student will be the first in his/her immediate family to pursue education beyond high school level
  • the student will have maintained a high school grade point average of 2.50 to 3.50.

Scholarship Committee Formed
 
Announcement:
 
At the last Foundation Meeting it was decided to form a Scholarship Committee.
Foundation President, Carl Robicheaux, announced this decision at our January 27 club meeting.
Thank you to those members who volunteered their time to join the Scholarship Committee. 
It will be composed of Tara Moenning, Scholarship Committee Chair, Jim Whiteneck, Carl Robicheaux, Guy Van der Werf, Mark Lee and Pete Sumey.
Their duties will involve evaluating 2022 scholarship applications when available.

Model Village Service Project in Bangladesh
 
Doug Mann said "It's an empowerment project in this village to teach men and women trade craft to earn a living."
