402 years after the Bard's death, Shakespeare Lives!
Robert Burkhardt to present this week's lively program

Robert Burkhardt, retired educator and founding Head of Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, April 12, at their regular noon meeting. He will present a program titled “Shakespeare Lives.”

Robert Burkhardt

Shakespeare has been “King of the Hill” in the English language for more than 400 years. Why? What makes him so great? And why should we care?

Burkhardt’s program will examine the ways in which Shakespeare continues to inhabit and shape our lives through the vocabulary we use, the ideas we share, the cultural references we make, and the very way we think. It has been argued that “Shakespeare invented us.” We look forward to a lively, provocative and engaging discussion.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary clubs have been serving communities worldwide for more than a century. Rotary clubs around the world initiate projects that address critical issues such as conflict resolution, hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park meets Thursdays at the Rodeway Inn in Estes Park, located at 1701 North Lake Avenue on Highway 34. Beginning May 24, 2018, meeting will move to The Ridgeline Hotel on South St. Vrain Ave., Estes Park. Visitors interested in learning more about Rotary and its programs are welcome to attend.  Buffet is served at 11:30 a.m., the Rotary business meeting opens at noon, and the program begins at 12:30 p.m.

Program
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation Community Grants program gives local charities an opportunity to request funds for special projects that benefit their constituents. They can submit requests for the projects at the beginning of the year. The Foundation received requests this year from 24 organizations. Foundation board members reviewed the grant applications and completed the challenging task of determining the  organizations to receive grant awards this year.
Today's program is the culmination of the effort with fourteen organizations that meet needs and contribute to the quality of life in the Estes valley selected to receive grants.
  • Boys & Girls Club of Larimer County
  • Crossroads Ministry
  • Estes Arts District
  • Estes Park Bright Christmas
  • Estes Park Learning Place
  • Estes Park Salud Foundation
  • Estes Valley Crisis Advocates
  • Estes Valley Investment in Childhood
  • Families for Estes
  • Glen Haven Flood Relief, Inc.
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Partners Mentoring Youth
  • Rocky Mountain Conservancy
  • Via Mobility Services
Our guests representing 13 of the selected organizations were recognized during the presentations. Dave Evans introduced each representative and read a brief description of each project. Jack Boatman presented the award checks. Jack will be coordinating the Community Grants program in 2019.

Sorted! Now let's finish counting!

Rotarians gathered at our storage garage March 29 to wake up the ducks and sort them into tubs. Volunteer with Wayne Andersen for duck counting at his house. It's easy and fun and important! Thanks to all the duck-dedicated volunteers!
All are welcome as volunteers!
Help the 2018 Estes Park Duck Race Festival

Everyone knows the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival is the place to be on the first Saturday in May. But, did you know that you do not have to be a Rotarian to help? That's right, Rotarians! You can invite your friends to help.

Make a splash! Be a Duck Race Festival volunteer this year! Invite your friends and family.

“We welcome volunteers who can give a few hours on Friday, May 4 and/or Saturday, May 5. No special skills are required except a positive attitude,” said Scott Thompson, Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival volunteer coordinator.

Be like Bob and volunteer for The Duck Race!

Thompson is looking for volunteers to help with:
  • Setting up and taking down equipment at the start and finish lines
  • Selling duck-themed race memorabilia at Bond Park and Riverside Plaza
  • Supporting operations in Bond Park for charities and organizations
  • Helping to display sponsor ducks
  • Ensuring safety along the riverbanks
  • Keeping the ducks from getting snagged in the river.
“Our 70-member club cannot put on this event without a host of volunteers. It’s a great way to help a great cause, to make new friends, and be part of one of the largest events in Estes Park,” Thompson added.

To sign up as a volunteer, contact Thompson at scott@estesparkrealestate.com or call him at 970-590-9941.
Albanian food, service project
to be featured at meeting

On Friday, April 20, Nehemiah Gateway is having a get-together with the Estes Park High School Honor Society so the students can hear about the Amaro Tan Summer Camp project in Albania. Rotarians are invited, as we are partners in the Amaro Tan grant.

"We’re bringing in the speakers for the event, and the high school cooking club is preparing traditional Albanian foods for the attendees to try," said club member Doug Mann, who is also the Nehemiah Gateway USA President.

"We’re going to highlight our Roma summer camp program that our Rotary club is sponsoring, and try as well to raise a bit of extra funding," he said.

More details will follow.
