Update from President Anne Slack
We have an exciting month ahead of us in Rotary. Our Annual Meeting is this coming Thursday. Following that on October 12th is the District Assembly up in Cheyenne, WY. Consider car-pooling to attend it. The third Thursday will be a presentation by Peter Teahan, a Rotarian speaking about his flight around the world with his friend John Ockenfels in a single-engine Cessna 210 to raise money for End Polio Now. Our fourth week will be a presentation by our District Governor, Julie Johnson Haffner. She will be here on End Polio Now Day, 10/24. On 10/25 we are headed to see Restoration Ranch - Colorado. We finish the month with Pumpkin Distribution at the Elementary School. I hope you can join us.
We need a member to step forward to accept the position of President Elect Nominee. Once we have that volunteer we can proceed with our slate of nominees for the 2025-2026 Rotary year.

Meeting Notes, Oct 3, 2024
President Anne Slack called the meeting to order.
Invocation by Lee Lasson who gave us Al Wasson’s prayer.
Annie led the Pledge of Allegiance.
We sang “America the Beautiful”.

Announcements:
Annie said next Thursday is our annual meeting when we vote on new officers and directors. The one big slot to fill is President Elect.
At October 17 meeting, program is by Cedar Rapids West Iowa Rotarian who flew a small plane around the world and raised $1 million for End Polio Now.
Our District Governor will visit for our October 24 meeting.
Our 5th Thursday meeting October 31 will be a visit to Restoration Ranch. That morning will be our pumpkin distribution at the elementary school.
New committee, 100% Paul Harris, meets Oct 7 at 1:00 at Kind Coffee with Teresa Mueller.
Scott Robbins invited us to the first meeting of the Coffee Klatsch for small talk and getting acquainted at Coffee on the Rocks, Saturday at 9:30. Avoid isolation and come and meet someone new.
Jack Boatman announced our club foundation will match up to $300 for each member’s donation to the Rotarian’s selected local charitable organizations from Oct 10-Nov 7. Pick up forms at these meetings.
Joann Batey thanked the Thompsons’ for sponsoring this year’s Yuletide open house at the Stanley Home Museum. She asks us for loans of historic toys to display at that event the weekend of Dec 14-15.
Scott Thompson said the Duck Race committee will meet here after today’s meeting to tell about the big changes coming to the Duck Race to perpetuate it another 37 years.
Scott said the Friendship card photo contest is underway. It is time to contact merchants to enroll or renew and Karen Thompson is chairing this. Please take a list from Karen to call or visit.
Bill Smith has 2 cards to sign, for Milt Garrett who has been in the hospital with dizziness, and Paula Edwards who broke a bone in her foot.

The Board Meeting for October was adjusted to allow discussion of the new structure of the Duck Race Event. The Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports were approved unanimously.
Jim Austin reported on his Documentation Committee’s progress and informed us that our current Constitution was out of date. Rotary International had a new Constitution as of 2022 that we needed to adopt. Jack Ford made a motion to “have Jim Austin rescind the 1989 version of our Constitution and vote to adopt the 2022 version of the Constitution at the November 7 meeting". To do this, at least 21 days prior to voting, we must notify each member and the District Governor of the intent to vote on rescinding our current constitution, and to vote on adopting and amending the 2022 revision of the club constitution. The proposals must be approved by 2/3's of the full membership at a regular meeting.
Next on the Agenda was discussion of the new structure of the Duck Race with Big Duck addressing the adoption sales, Merchant Prizes, Sponsors and Volunteer Recruiting. Bob Fulton, Jeff Lindberg, Lawrence Trifilletti, Lee Lasson and others will be addressing Event Design, Publicity, Race Operations, Entertainment, Tech Operations.
A motion was made by Karen Thompson to approve the new structure of the Duck Race.
Karol Rinehart seconded it. Then a discussion followed by asking each Officer and Directorate to share their opinion of the proposed changes. At the conclusion, the motion passed unanimously on voice vote.
There was no Past President /Foundation Report or President Elect Report.
Committee Reports included Community Services Chair Beth Weisberg reporting the Estes Park Learning Place books are in; Pumpkins will be distributed on Oct 25; $195 has been collected for the Bright Christmas family so far.

Fund Development Committee report was read by President Annie Slack for the Moennings who could not attend. Next year’s John Denver Tribute Concert is scheduled for August 23, 2025.
Membership Committee Chair, Scott Robbins, advised us to read the Spoke for his Membership Minute. He also has business cards to share and recommends we use Clubrunner to store documents
Club Administration Chair Karol Rinehart and Sergeant-at-Arms Jim Whiteneck had no report.
Youth/New Gen/Vocational Chair Jim Jonell and International Services Chair Ron Gordon were absent.
There were no concluding remarks and the meeting adjourned.
Double Your Donation to Your Favorite Local Charity!
2024 Matching Charitable Donation Program - Ends Nov. 7
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is conducting a matching charitable donation program this fall to supplement donations to local non-profits.
The maximum matching donation amount is $300 per member and the minimum donation amount is $50. Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between October 10 and November 7, 2024.
The Foundation will be providing matching donations to any qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State.
The application form which provides detailed instructions is available at the weekly club meetings. You will also be receiving an email with the application form attached.

Amaro Tan Summer Camp “The Future”
The Amaro Tan school summer camp, held in August, was intended to provide an unforgettable experience for children with socio-economic challenges, including those from the Roma, Egyptian and other marginalized communities. With the participation of over 55 students, this camp created a safe and supportive environment for children facing various problems such as street exploitation, family problems, divorce and violence.
For three weeks, from Monday to Friday, children had the opportunity to forget about their problems and spend quality time under the care of teachers and in the company of classmates. The camp started at 09:00 and ended at 13:30, offering bus transport between their homes and the park in which the camp was held. The children ate breakfast at the camp and lunch in the school cafeteria.
During the time spent in the camp, the children learned through games and activities to cooperate for a common goal, to get to know each other and their teachers better in an out-of-school environment. Each morning, the responsible teacher shared about the implementation of values, creating a positive and inspiring atmosphere.
The Amaro Tan school summer camp was a great opportunity for the children that come from the communities that the school supports. It helped to get them away from difficult family situations, or gave them an alternative to roaming the streets, and offered them a pleasant time together. This camp not only gave the children space away from their daily problems, but also served to motivate them for the future. They learned that the future can be full of opportunity and hope, despite the challenges they currently face.

Duck Race Storage - Need Your Help
I was reviewing the duck race budget and we are paying $2,750 per year or $.34 per duck per year for our storage locker. This is not a cost that we can cover from our duck sales and is significant. Ilan Levy who is a Fort Collins Rotarian and has been to our meetings in the past is the owner of Exodus Moving and Storage. He has offered us a storage container at no charge that we can use to store our duck stuff. This is very generous and will save the duck race a lot of money. But we need a place to park the storage container. It will be about the size of a parking space and could go in a back yard, next to a garage, or anywhere you have space. Please let me know if you or someone you know has a location where we can park the storage container.

District Assembly

Assembly will take place at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne in the Clay Pathfinder Building (on the backside of the college).
Subject: 'Undivide Us' screening/discussion October 30
In my role as Civic Engagement Librarian, I'm writing to invite you and other Noon Rotary members to a free screening of the documentaryUndivide Us, followed by a community discussion, on Wednesday, October 30, from 5:30-8:30 PM at the Estes Park Museum. We'll provide dinner, and following the film, we'll hold a discussion led by Dr. Martín Carcasson, Director of the Colorado State University Center for Public Deliberation. As its creators write, Undivide Us challenges the idea that citizens who disagree are not capable of civil conversation, and demonstrates the truth that, even in our differences, the American experiment is still alive and well.
The Library, in collaboration with the Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership, is bringing this program to the Estes Valley as part of our Community Conversations program, which seeks to build capacity for local problem-solving by bringing people together across differences to listen to each other and look for common ground. In the coming months and throughout 2025, we'll be holding workshops and facilitating conversations around challenging community issues, and we thought this screening/discussion would be a great way to kick that process off.
As someone who leads an organization that serves the community and fosters connection, we thought you might be interested in a discussion around holding respectful conversations without giving up our positions on the issues. If that does sound appealing, we'd love it if you could join us for the event and share it with your membership. FOR OUR BRIGHT CHRISTMAS FAMILY
We won't be passing around the collection can this Thursday because Beth won't be at the meeting. But if anyone wants to support buying gifts for the family our Club will be adopting through Bright Christmas this year, please give your cash or checks this week to Gregg Jurgens. Checks should be made payable to Rotary Club of Estes Park, and write "Bright Christmas family" in the memo line. Please do not make your check payable to Bright Christmas -- if you do, we won't be able to use it to buy gifts for our adopted family.
Beth will be back next week (October 10) and will be passing around the collection can again then and for the rest of October.
Once we know how much money we have, we will know how large or small a family we can adopt.
Restoration Ranch Colorado, a 501(c)(3), provides recreation, respite, and vacation opportunities to emergency communication specialists (dispatchers), fire/EMS, law enforcement including Department of Corrections and park rangers, ED/ICU personnel, victims’ advocates, members of the judiciary, and their families.
Let me know if you would like to join us. Right now 9 people are going, 7 from Sunrise Rotary and 2 from our Rotary. There are 15 spots available. Steve and Kaylyn Kruger will host us, providing lunch as well as tours of their hiking trails.
Our purpose is to assess if we want to contribute to their project.
