This week's speaker: District 5440 Governor Ken Small
Topic: Growing and Strengthening Rotary

District Governor Ken Small and his wife Joan

Ken Small, Governor of Rotary District 5440, will be our speaker and honored guest this week. District 5440 includes 54 clubs in Wyoming, Northwestern Colorado, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska.

The International Rotary theme for the year is Be a Gift to the World. DG Small is expected to focus on growing Rotary’s contributions to humanity. The theme is meant to put focus on all the projects that the Estes Park Club accomplishes, both locally and internationally. Opportunities are plentiful for potential members, young and old, to help Rotary achieve its mission of “peace and understanding throughout the world,” and by bringing their passion to provide service.

“We’re happy to share some of our projects with the District Governor,”  President Scott Thompson said. "The Rotary Club of Estes Park has contributed locally and globally through many projects, including our signature event, The Duck Race."

Ken Small joined the Rotary Club of Arlington, VA in 1985. He served as president in 2003-04. He also served Arlington Rotary as vice president, secretary, and at various times the chairman of the Club Service, Vocational, and International committees. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. Ken has attended Rotary International conventions in France, Canada, Australia and the USA (with his Dad, PDG Bob Small).

Ken is a registered industrial engineer in three jurisdictions. He completed a career in the U.S. Air Force in 1987. During his military career he served tours in Vietnam, England, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. His international tours included working with host and allied countries. He returned to national service in 2005 as the Air Force Team Chief for the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. He also returned to the Pentagon to provide temporary assistance to the Air Staff during 2009 and 2011.

Outside of his national service, Ken is an engineering consultant and was a strategic marketing manager for both architect/engineer companies and aerospace companies. His project-oriented work includes environmental assessments, development of on-site cogeneration plants, and communications facility development. He holds bachelor and master degrees in engineering and also in business administration and management.

Ken has two sons who live in California and Tennessee and two grandchildren in Tennessee. Ken and Joan moved to Jackson Wyoming in 2009. Ken joined Jackson Hole Rotary Club in the fall of 2009.

Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship

The Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship
Memorandum of Understanding
WHEREAS, the family and friends of Ron Kuhns wish to establish a scholarship to be administered by The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation (hereafter referred to as the Foundation) in the sum of $1,000; and
WHEREAS, such funds have been received by the Foundation; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation have gratefully received such funds to be utilized for the purposes intended; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation desire that this be a permanent endowment to the greatest extent possible;
NOW THEREFORE, the Trustees do establish the Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship Fund, to be administered as follows:
  1. Funds were received in the amount of $30,000 as of the date of this agreement (the “corpus”).
  2. For years following 2015, two calculations will be made by the Foundation:
a. The interest generated by the corpus over the period ending December  31th of each year will be calculated based on the average return  of the entire Foundation endowment fund.  This will be the base amount available for the scholarship award.
b. The amount of the scholarship of $1,000 for the student selected in May of each year.
  1. Should there not be a student identified the income (return) generated shall be added to the corpus.
  2. It will be assumed that the Kuhns funds will be incorporated into the other assets invested in the endowment portion of the Foundation.  The amount in the Kuhns corpus will, however, be separately identified in the Foundation reporting and for the purposes of calculating the return.
  3. The scholarship so awarded shall be a one year scholarship to a student who:
a. does not qualify academically for another scholarship being awarded that year;
b. is identified by the Scholarship Committee as possessing a passion for a unique field of study that, nevertheless, meets the general criteria for a Rotary Scholarship:
c. is pursing full-time studies at an accredited college, university, or technical/trade school;
d. is a citizen of the United States or permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship;
e. is a resident of Estes Park for the last 2 or more years;
f. applies for the scholarship through the Estes Park High School Scholarship Application process.
  1. The scholarship may be awarded at the Awards Night ceremony.
  2. In the event the amount in the Kuhns fund becomes insufficient to provide for the intended purpose, the Trustees may combine the then balance with other Foundation funds and administer them pursuant to the general purposes of the Foundation

Rotary Quote of the Week

"Every Rotarian in every Rotary club has an implicit opportunity to sustain Rotary through recruiting new members, assuring that the existing members enjoy Rotary through participation in projects and fellowship, and finding within themselves the reasons they are in Rotary and ensuring that they continue to nurture their interest. Bring friends, professional cohorts, and interested persons to Rotary. One of the great satisfactions available through Rotary is realizing that you can Be A Gift to the World."

          - Ken Small, 2015-16 District 5440 Governor
