Graham Nelson has been an aviation enthusiast ever since childhood; he has loved all things aviation. He has lived here in Estes Park Colorado and worked at Safeway for 11 years. He attends the Oshkosh EAA AirVenture every year that it is held. The freedom of aviation is very enticing to Graham.
This presentation will be about his adventure at Oshkosh Wisconsin for the EAA AirVenture 2021. It will include a slide show with questions and answers afterward. If you do have a question about a particular slide, Graham will be glad to answer that at the time as long as it is short.
Graham loves talking about his adventure in photo and video form. He hopes to bring his love of the shows and the experiences to all who attend. He also hopes to bring the sounds, maybe even the smells of fresh cut grass, oil and jet fuel mixed with general aviation fuel along with sunscreen as the sun beams down on the grounds of Wittman Field at the EAA show. He wants you to experience the faint distant EAA Radio softly talking to all of the attendees about what is new and exciting at the AirVenture grounds as well as the sound of the occasional B-17 and B-25, the helicopters and the Ford Tri-Motor flying overhead. You will feel like you are there when you hear the attendees saying “oh wow look at that airplane” or “this airplane is so neat.” Graham looks forward to sharing his love of the Oshkosh AirVenture show with all of you.
Update by President Jim Whiteneck
Announcements:
We had an excellent turnout on two Community Service projects this past week. Kudos to Beth Weisberg and Sue Fereday regarding the Pumpkin Distribution. The elementary school children were very excited about receiving their pumpkins on Friday morning!
On Friday evening we had a wonderful crew that participated in the providing meals at the Community Corner Café. Approximately 150 meals were served and good fellowship was had by all. Thanks to all the members who participated!
Please (important) plan to come to our Club meeting on November 4 to give your thoughts regarding our future!
I’m sure there are other members in addition to Tom Maher who will enjoy hearing Graham Nelson talk about Aviation and Air Shows this Thursday! Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting!
October 14, 2021 Meeting Notes
President Jim Whiteneck called the meeting to order. Tara Moenning gave the invocation Jim Whiteneck led the Pledge of Allegiance. Madison Casey led the song, “Home on the Range” for today’s program by Habitat for Humanity.
Guests: Beth Weisberg introduced Scott Robbins. Guy Van Der Werf introduced his son Ben.
Announcements:
Two of our meetings in November will be devoted to Visioning for our club’s future. We need everyone’s input to set our course for the next few years.
Mel Rueppel has agreed to be our Sergeant at Arms. Mel made some comments on the job and said he had been studying how clubs fined members but he was likely pulling our leg. Then he fined himself $20 for being late to set up today, and we wondered.
We still have job openings: we need two more scribes to take these meeting notes. We need a writer for our releases to Estes Park News. AND WE NEED A LITTLE DUCK!
Pumpkin distribution is at the elementary school tomorrow morning. Susan Fereday, Beth Weisberg, and Wayne Newsom will be there. Beth invited us all to join them at 8:20 and it will go fast.
We have our volunteers ready for the Community Café tomorrow afternoon, coordinated by Jack Boatman.
Jack Boatman said our club foundation is matching up to $300 of members’ donations to local charities. Bring your checks made to your charity and the foundation matches. There is a collection box at our meetings or you can mail to the PO box. President Jim said this will total up to $11,000 matches by the foundation.
Carl Robicheauxwants to keep Pete Sinnott making his beautiful wood bowls for new golf tournament sponsors. Today’s award was to Mark Lee.
Phil Moenningdescribed our club’s special fundraising dinner at Twin Owls for scholarships in December. Tara distributed envelopes to all with the information and club addressed envelope to sponsor a table. You can request adjacent tables to expand your party or be close to friends. If snow, restaurant will provide shuttles from parking spot to door. You can contact Taharra Lodge directly to book a room for overnight at the dinner, if you want. Restaurant will hold up to 120. Carl Robicheaux encouraged everyone to participate for scholarships and said if we commit to 20 tables, he will dress up however (whatever?) we want.
Ron Gordon told of the international projects the club board has approved. For model villages in Bangladesh, we will sponsor merchant kiosks to make and sell merchandise. We partner with a club there. We want $2,000 to monitor the proper progress of this project. Our board approved $1,000 of it and we will raise the rest with grants or committee donations.
Beth Weisberg said the board approved $358.72 for art kits she purchased on Amazon for CASA kids.

Happy Money
Karen Thompson was happy that money from sale of Friendship cards fund these foreign projects. She is also happy that Scott Thompson was named Realtor of the Year last week at the annual Estes Valley Board of Realtors dinner! And his colleague was named Rookie of the Year. Congratulations!
Pete Sinnott was happy that Karen Thompson organized and worked so hard at Elk Fest.
Tom Maher was impressed that Moennings included a stamp on the return envelope for the scholarship dinner. He will move back to Arizona, leaving next week, but will make a donation. He also was impressed that Ben Van der Werf was wearing a tie and elevating the tone of our gathering.
Mel Rueppel said he was not really fining people.
Madison Casey said he had unhappy money because he did not have his name badge today.
Tara Moenning was happy.
Program: Dennis Gellhaus introduced John Lovell of Habitat for Humanity for the St. Vrain Valley who presented this amazing organization.
The meeting was adjourned with the 4 Way Test.

Pumpkin Distribution
Even though only 5 people committed in advance to coming to the pumpkin distribution (Wayne Newsom, and Jim and Carol Whiteneck), on the morning of October 15, Scott and Karen Thompson and Dave Evans also showed up. So, along with Sue Fereday and me, that made a total of 8 who were there to help at the pumpkin distribution.
Sue organized the whole pumpkin donation with Safeway and with the elementary school this year. She brought 3 members of her office team with her to load and unload the pumpkins, which she hauled in her truck and trailer. So, bravo and many thanks to Sue for all of her work in arranging this event nearly single-handed this year.
We started at 8:20 a.m. on Friday, October 15; it was freezing cold but bright and sunny. Safeway donated approximately 500 pumpkins. The children came out class by class and picked their pumpkins, as if it was a pumpkin patch. They were very excited and happy as soon as they saw the pumpkins, and the kids and their teachers called out a lot of thank-you's to us as they came and went.
All in all it was a very happy event. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Welcome to Duck Race 2022
October 28, 2021 5 PM
We are hoping to run our ducks down the river again with a live, in-person event on May 7, 2022, and it’s time to start planning.
The 2022 Duck Race Committee will hold its first meeting on Thursday, October 28, at 5:00 p.m. in person at the Hondius Room at the Estes Valley Library. The meeting will also be available by Zoom: the link for the meeting is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/ 7985707369 .
Please try to attend. Important decisions will be made, and votes will be taken, on the following matters:
whether to buy a new (brighter) Duck Race banner from Hobert’s, for the 34/36 intersection;
whether to require each of our participating organizations to provide one volunteer to help with river security on Race Day 2022, as a condition of being allowed to participate in the Duck Race; and
whether to allocate $30,000 as a reserve for needed Duck Race software development, with potentially $10,000 to be used in the first year and $5,000 - $8,000 per year being spent on software programs for several years after that.
It's your chance to make your voice and ideas heard and vote count!
If you are not already a member of the 2022 Duck Race Committee but would like to join
let Beth Weisberg know; she will add you to the Committee member list so that you will receive future emails
let Beth know of your interests
attend the meeting on October 28; the more ideas shared, the better.
If you have already signed up to be a member of the 2022 Duck Race Committee or if you have let Beth know you want to join
a more detailed agenda for the October 28 meeting and
a more detailed overview of the recommendations of the Duck Race Software Committee will be emailed to you for your review prior to the meeting.
