Philip Murphy, Governor of Rotary District 5440, will speak at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Estes Park at noon on Thursday, Nov. 13. The international Rotary theme for the year is “Light Up Rotary.” Murphy's district includes 54 Rotary clubs in Wyoming, Northwestern Colorado, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska.
Murphy is expected to focus on Growing Rotary. The theme is meant to highlight all the projects that the Estes Park Club accomplishes, both locally and internationally. Opportunities are plentiful for potential members, young and old, to help Rotary achieve its mission of “peace and understanding throughout the world,” and by bringing their passion to provide service.
Murphy has lived in Fort Collins since 1976 and recently retired from the Colorado State Forest Service, an agency of Colorado State University. He served as the Information Technology Manager for 25 years. Prior to that he was the field director for the forest inventory analysis program.
Murphy is a member of the Fort Collins Breakfast Rotary Club and was club treasurer for 14 years and a past president (2006-07). He has also been a facilitator for both Club Visioning and the Rotary Leadership Institute and served as an Assistant Governor in both Estes Park and Fort Collins. Additionally, Murphy volunteers for the Food Bank of Larimer County, Education and Life Training Center in Fort Collins, the Poudre School District and Meals on Wheels. Murphy has also been involved with Boy Scouts and the City of Fort Collins Natural Resources Board.
Governor Phil and his wife, Sara, have been married for 39 years and they have two children and three grandchildren. His son is a bank manager in Louisiana and his daughter is a kindergarten teacher in Denver. Murphy, Sara and their children are Paul Harris Fellows. In his free time, Murphy is an avid bird and caricature carver and photographer.
Visiting Rotarian Doug Pauley from Hastings, Nebraska.
Lee Lasson's guest was Tom Souza from Brazil, who is serving as an intern at the YMCA of the Rockies.
Newly-armed Sergeant-at-Arms Bob Brunson rather convincingly asked for volunteers to help with meeting set-up and sound system.
Pam Gilbert shared her passion for education, drinking water and sanitation for a mountain village in Ecuador. Our club is one of her global grant partners.
Three Estes Park Rotary Clubs collaborate on grant
On October 30, Estes Park students heard a powerful speaker, courtesy of our three Estes Park Rotary Clubs. Jerry Traylor spent the day with high school and middle school students, delivering a message of empowerment.
After meeting U.S. Presidents and appearing countless times in the national media, Traylor counts his time with students as his most important. He emphasized that the years students are in middle and high school shape their opportunities for the future.
“Graduation is not the finish line. It’s actually the starting line,” he said.
Traylor encouraged students to look into their hearts and souls and to embrace what makes them unique, to seek supportive friends, and to strive for excellence, not perfection, which is unobtainable.
“Find out who you are and really, really build that person,” he told the high school students. “Don’t worry about what you lack.”
Born with cerebral palsy, the Nebraska native has done so much more than simply accept his disability: he has become a symbol for extraordinary effort to achieve what no one believed he could. On crutches, he made his way up Pikes Peak three times, skied Colorado’s mountains, competed in 28 marathons, as well as jogged 3,528 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge to New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. And these milestones came after Traylor endured 14 surgeries, years of therapy and painful braces during his childhood.
The grant was a funded by a grant awarded to the Sunrise, Noon and Longs Peaks clubs. The speaker's message resonated with the 4-Way Test's "Will it build good will and better friendships?"
President Brad Rosenbaum called the meeting to order at 12:00. Randy Skeie gave the Invocation, Rev. Larry Corbett led the Pledge of Allegiance and song, and Ward Nelson introduced guests. Visiting Rotarians were Doug Pauley of Hastings, NE and Pam Gilbert of E-Club 1. Guests of Rotarians included: Tom Souza of Brazil, Lee Lasson's guest; Wayne Newsom's wife, Pat; and Scott Thompson's wife, Karen.

"During this month, I urge each of you will take an opportunity to sit back and reflect on the good works that our Foundation accomplishes everyday and make your own personal choice as to how you will continue to support these life changing projects. Many clubs within our District boundary have used District and Global Grants funds to assist those in need, locally and internationally. Be "Rotary Proud" that your dollars have been used to provide hope and put a smile on the face of someone you will never meet. If looking for more inspiration, pick up the latest issue of The Rotarian and read about projects that other clubs are doing to help change or save lives."
Phil Murphy, 2014-15 District 5440 District Governor
