Dave Boon to share RYLA:
Rotary's youth leadership program

A leader is one who compels others to positive action by the power of their own positive action.

Rocky Mountain RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is considered one of the leading youth leadership programs in the US and in the Rotary International world. RYLA is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary where students and young professionals from ages 14-30 can hone their leadership potential.

Dave Boon, heavily involved with RYLA since 2003, will be speaking to our club on Thursday, Feb. 14. Boon will present the amazing history of RYLA, YRYLA, and RYLA+ and update us on all the exciting things that RYLA does.

Dave Boon

The first RYLA in our Rotary District was held in !987 in Estes Park with 105 students. Today, annually, there are five youth leadership camps totaling over 700 male and female students.

Boon is a charter member of the Fort Collins Rotary After Work Club, is a two-time president, and is currently the Chair of the International Committee. Past winner of the RI Presidential “4-Avenues of Service Award,” he has been Chair of YRYLA, a senior counselor at RYLA and YRYLA, a speaker at RYLA events, and has been on the Rocky Mountain RYLA Board of Directors and their past president.

He is the Executive Director of the Children’s Speech and Reading Center. He and his wife have a non-profit, Empowering Opportunities, that supports orphans and marginalized youth in Nepal. He remains passionate about helping youth.

Estes Park High School sophomores and juniors, with potential or proven leadership experience and who have excelled in one or more areas of high school involvement, are encouraged to apply to attend the five day RYLA conference. Seventh graders may apply to the YRYLA (Young RYLA) conference.  Also, physically-challenged teens may apply for the RYLA Plus conference.

Help bring safety message to students

Kindergarten students at Estes Park Elementary School will have a close encounter with an otter in May this year. They will learn how to keep themselves safe around water and to always be with an adult. These lifesaving lessons are delivered by our Estes Park Rotary Club members, friends and a rather large otter.

The grandsons of a fellow Rotarian tragically drowned two years ago in the river at Pinewood Springs while playing. They were young students in Estes Park Elementary. Their teacher, Stefanie Hart and their Rotarian grandfather began the Josh the Otter Water Safety Program in Colorado because of his personal loss in Pinewood Springs. This program has spread to many schools in Colorado, includes other service clubs, and can include a visit by a large Josh to hug and love the students.

Josh visits EP Elementary in 2018

Our Rotary is the partner to obtain the books with CD’s the kids receive during the 45- minute reading of the book, singing, and taking the pledge taught by Josh to always be with an adult near the water.

In the past years our Rotary has funded the books and provided 4 people to read to the youngsters. With our new grant program, if no one funds the books for this year, we will try to raise funds during a Rotary meeting in order to purchase the needed books. Typically this effort is $300.

We partner with the Josh Collins Memorial Foundation which is at the center of this effort for the United States. This foundation was started due to a similar incident to ours in Pinewood Springs and has become a partner to many Rotaries and other service organizations across the US to teach the water safety message.

At a future meeting, you will have a chance to respond with funds for this year’s effort.
New program!
Double your gift to a local charity

Our club will not be conducting a community grant program during 2019. In recent years the funds available for distribution via the community grant program have been decreasing and the number of worthy applicants have been increasing. In lieu of the community grant program the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation will be implementing a matching charitable donation program to supplement donations to local non-profits from club members.

The  maximum matching donation amount for 2019 is $100 per member. The Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between January 1 and March 31, 2019. The Foundation will be providing matching donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State. The Foundation has designated approximately $6,000 for the matching charitable donation program for 2019.

The application form which provides detailed instructions is available on the club website and will be available at the weekly club meetings.

Rotary Quote of the Week

“That one week at RYLA shaped me in ways that are hard to describe, across all aspects of my personal and professional life. But most of all, I left with a raging desire to become a better leader and even move active and involved in my community."

-Rhett Martin, Rotaract Club of Silverton, Oregon, quoted on RYLA website
