Oct. 11, 2018 meeting highlights
President David Evans welcomed members and guests and thanked everyone for coming. Scott Thompson gave the invocation, invoking the ideal of “Enduring Values” for Rotarians. Pete Sumey led us in singing "Edelweiss" in honor of the bright white snow and crisp air this week, then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no visiting Rotarians. Longley Parker then asked members to introduce their guests:
Dana Fritz brought her neighbor and friend Lee Dehmel, who always helps our club for the Duck Race and Elk Fest;
Bill Smith introduced his business associate, Angela McKenzie-Tucker, who is moving to the Front Range;
Bill Solms was happy to introduce Lisa Taylor, head of Marketing for Estes Park Health;
Wayne Newsom was thrilled to have his wife, Pat, with him today; and
Tom Maher continued yesterday’s birthday celebration for his wife Marilyn by bringing her to lunch with Rotary.
Joke
Scott Thompson’s story today reflected the perils of autocorrect and technology. We are all invited to send jokes for Scott to use at our meetings.
Announcements
There will be no Rotary meeting on Oct. 25, as meeting rooms at the Ridgeline Hotel are all booked for that date.
The Rotary Halloween Pumpkin Give-Away is on Oct, 25 at the EP Elementary school at 8:30 am. Volunteers are needed. Organizer is Susan Fereday.
Scott reported that beer sales for Elk Fest raised over $5,000. Expenses were approximately $1,000. Profits will be split between our club and the Long’s Peak Rotary. Many thanks to the Estes Park Brewery for their donation of two kegs and the wholesale cost of the other seven kegs!
Karen Thompson reminded members that World Polio Day is Oct. 24. The Fund Development Committee is enlisting volunteers to place jars in restaurants from Oct.19 through Oct. 24 to collect donations for this important cause. The Gates Foundation will match contributions on a 2 to 1 basis. There will be a press release to publicize our project.
Happy Money
Annie Slack is happy that Pete Sumey has volunteered to serve on the Salvation Army Board. She thanked Wayne Anderson and Randy Skeie for their many years of faithful service to this organization.
Tom Maher is happy to mark his 42ndyear as a Rotarian in our club.
Bob Brunson was pleased to match Tom Maher’s contribution.
Scott Thompson was glad that Tom Maher had provided him today’s joke.
Bill Solms is happy that Rick Taylor asked him to bring Lisa Taylor to the meeting today.
Program
Mike Connolly gave a detailed introduction to our guest speaker, Astronaut Colonel Loren Shriver. The program included a fascinating video of the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope during a five-day mission in 1990 that Col. Shriver commanded. Col. Shriver answered questions from a rapt audience about his time in space.
The meeting was adjourned with the 4-Way Test.

Rotary Quote of the Week
"World Polio Day is a tremendous opportunity for clubs to highlight Rotary, and our historic work to eradicate polio, in their own communities. It is also a great way to take advantage of the challenge from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. For every dollar that Rotary raises for polio eradication, the Gates Foundation will give two more. Join me, and Rotarians everywhere, on Oct. 24 for World Polio Day- and Be the Inspiration for a polio-free world."
- Barry Rassin, Rotary International President, 2018-19
