Our club will not meet on Thursday, July 30, because it is the 5th Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 6. You can attend the meeting and have lunch at Nicky's beginning at 11:30 a.m. or you can log in remotely on Zoom to attend the meeting. So, the choice of how to attend is yours.
If you're going to join the group at Nicky's you will need to R.S.V.P. Send Karol and email at: kj.rinehart@centurylink.netBEFORE 5 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 4). This will be the "drill" going forward, so mark your calendars so you remember to R.S.V.P. to Karol before Tuesday at 5 p.m. every week we meet.
Details for Nicky's: Attendance limited to 25, food will be served rather than a buffet, price is $15. Those attending must have a meal, as there is a restriction on the number that can attend. Please arrive as close to 11:30 as possible so meals can be served before the meeting begins.
Scott is available to anyone needing help with Zoom.

Update from President Bill Solms
This week's Club meeting was short but a real treat! After Scott's joke, I had to give up my Happy Money to an easier trivia question as to what was our RI president's country; yes, Germany was the answer. But I offered an additional $5.00 if anyone could remember the trivia word from 2 weeks ago.... yes it had "nerd" in it.... On to more interesting news:
The following is an update report on Gary Hazelton from Karen on his release last Friday and a parade in his honor (a surprise) at 3:30 pm on Monday:
"....We’re getting released from Anschutz this afternoon!! Yahoo!
The parade is set for Monday at 3:30 p.m. the drive-by parade will go past the intersection by our house. From Estes Park Police Lt. Rick Life: “Please tell friends and family to be on Wonderview on the shoulder of the westbound lane in front of the Stanley for a 3:30 start. Tell them we will pass by your house at MacGregor Ave. and the Rock Acres entrance twice, we’ll go by once, turn around and come back by again. Tell everyone to run their hazard lights, it looks cool that way!” This is an EPPD Friends & Family parade!
It anyone wishes, the theme of the parade is the color purple, since the color for pancreatic cancer support is PURPLE!! Anything purple in the parade would be fun, balloons, streamers, etc..(not necessary though), we want as many parade participants as we can, so if your don’t have purple, no problem, just come and celebrate his homecoming after his Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer! This is a surprise for him and will mean so much to Gary! Thank you! This will be tons of fun! Tell anyone who might be interested in participating to join in! KriS"
Brittney Woodrum gave a summary of her attempt to reach Longs' summit with her "Shelter Box" logoed cooler on her back; fortunately she was courageous enough to turn back at the base of the Home Stretch due to high winds.... she promises to come back a second time soon! Please support her in her efforts to raise $1,400.00 per 14k peak. At the base of the home stretch she was above that altitude!
Lastly, it appears all of our committees were able to meet via email or on line, so I am very encouraged about the energy of our Club..... Don't forget to invite a friend to our next meeting in August as well as to make your reservation through Karol by 5pm the previous Tuesday.
Best to all of you,
Bill Solms

July 23 Meeting Notes
The zoomers began coming on at 11:30 and conversing until the meeting was called to order by President Bill Solms at 12:00. 13 attended on zoom and 4 at Nicky’s. Thanks to Scott Thompson, our Zoom host and Mike Connolly for set up at Nicky’s.
Bill announced Happy Birthday for Don Widrig and Happy Anniversary to Doug and Michelle Mann. Bill gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Scott offered his joke. Bill gave his trivia challenge questions for $20 and $5 donation from him for Happy Money. The first challenge question was answered and Bill will donate $20. The second was not.
Announcements
Big Duck Karen Thompson announced that the committee will meet Thursday August 13 at 5:00 via Zoom. All are welcome. They will discuss the details of the virtual duck race. You can contact her at bigduck@epduckrace.org.
Karen announced that Gary Hazelton is progressing very well following pancreatic cancer surgery on several organs. He is eager to get home. Kris is secretly organizing a purple drive by parade for him at their condo so we should participate—possibly next Monday afternoon. Details to follow. Purple is the color for pancreatic cancer.
Bill reminded us there will be no meeting next week on the fifth Thursday. Next meeting is August 6. To attend in person, reserve with Karol by 5:00 on the Tuesday before.
Happy Money
Karen Thompson was happy that the article in the Spoke inviting the public to contribute generated $100 each from Milt Garrett and Rita DuChateau. Ron added that his $500 had arrived and asked if Pete’s had as well.
Report
Our guest Brittany Woodrum reported on her fundraising for ShelterBoxes. She has been VERY active climbing mountains to raise money for these, and has climbed 12 peaks in 10 days. She reported to us on her Longs Peak climb. They started at 2:00 a.m. and made good time to the Boulder Field and beyond. Then the winds at 40 mph became so dangerous that she stopped at the base of the Homestretch. The wind was severe enough that she would have turned back anyway, but in addition the big ShelterBox acted as a sail and would have been extremely dangerous to attempt the last few hundred feet of smooth, 45-degree rock. She got lots of inquires about the box she was carrying, so it was great publicity.
Committee Updates
Bill said this is committee meeting day.
Rotary Foundation meets at 1:30 today on Zoom.
Karen Thompson had sent email of no Fund Development meeting, but with and update and requests for input and help.
Bill said Tara Moenning is planning the Shred and Recycle day.
Today at 4:00 the Community Service Committee meets chaired by Jim Whiteneck and Zoom hosted by Scott.
Bill said Ron Gordon got funding from Rotary International and Bill is looking forward to seeing the project Ron and committee come up with.
Annie Slack will host a Membership Committee email meeting, details to be announced.
Karen asked Bill if he could give us an update next meeting on Polio Plus status and progress.
Karen asked Scott if Elkfest was still on. Scott said yes, so far. It will be the usual first weekend in October. This year in 2 locations—Bond Park and the town Visitors Center – each limited to 175 people. We will serve beer in Bond Park, and the entire park will be fenced.
Adjournment
Bill adjourned the meeting with the Four Way Test.
Rotary Foundation will meet next Thursday, August 4, at 11:30 online or in person.

Anne Slack invites us to welcome
New member Milt Garrett
Milt Garrett is well familiar to our club, having been a member previously, a speaker at our meetings and a caregiver to some of our former members, Bob Brunson being the most recent club member until his passing. President Bill Solms had a very nice write up in the May 14th Spoke welcoming Milt back into the club.
Milt Garrett
Milt graduated from Texas A&M University (Industrial Engineering doctorate), the Disney University and the University of Northern Colorado (B.S., M.S.). He went on to teach on, or for, 15 universities and colleges in the USA and five in Russia. Forty-two years ago, he opened his own company, Garrett Group International. As a professor emeritus, he travels worldwide as part of the International Quality movement and management development for public and private organizations. Last year he was invited to be one of 50 citizen diplomates, with origins from five countries, to interview ten Russian experts and then visited Russians, at random, in eight cities for their perspectives on US-Russian relations – Crimea being one of the locations. For the last 22 years, his company has focused on economic recovery of Russia.
Milt is currently in Ft. Collins assisting a friend after an accident that is requiring her to be at Craig’s Spinal and Brain Rehabilitation Hospital for rehabilitation. He is concerned about how much he can participate in the Noon Rotary but was assured he was welcome and to consider this club his “home” club.
Milt became a Charter Member of a new Albuquerque Rotary Cub on February 23, 1988, the anniversary of the founding of Rotary. This is his sixth overall Rotary Club membership.
This report is a small summary of Dr. Milt Garrett’s life; if you have further interest in his honors, awards and degrees, contact President Bill Solms for additional information. Please welcome Dr. Milt Garrett the next time you see him in attendance.
This is part of a continuing series by Anne Slack featuring our newest members.

Duck Race 2020 will be virtual
Adopt your ducks at epduckrace.org
With a mixture of regret and excitement, the Estes Park Duck Race Festival Committee has decided to host a virtual experience on Saturday, Sept. 19 instead of an in-person event.
“We surely feel regret because the global pandemic forces us to find a new way to move forward safely with the 32nd Annual Estes Park Duck Race,” said ‘Big Duck’ Karen Thompson. “But as soon as we decided to have a virtual Duck Race, we started to see so many new and thrilling possibilities that we are now very excited!”
Details are being developed that will ensure the race is accessible online, entertaining for those who tune into the livestream, and rewarding for the 67 Participating Organizations that are busy selling Duck Adoptions.
The virtual event will feature a live Tail Spin Drawing of the major prizes and hundreds of Duck Buck certificates for local merchants. The Major Prizes include:
Cash Prize: $2,000
Cash Prize: $1,000
Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at the Pine Lodge on Whitefish River near Glacier National Park
Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at the Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone National Park
Travel Prize: 3-night stay for two at Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite National Park.
All travel prizes include extras, which vary between the resorts. Travel prizes have been provided by Delaware North, the lodging and concession corporation that includes the Ridgeline Hotel in Estes Park.
“Delaware North has graciously extended the expiration dates for the travel prizes to 2022, which means the winners will have extra time to plan a safe trip,” Thompson said.
Duck adopters will have the chance to win hundreds of prizes valued at $20 and up. The difference is that this year the merchants don't have to donate prizes. Most of the prizes, called Duck Bucks, will be provided by the Duck Race Committee and generous donors and can be redeemed at local businesses.
“We think it's time to help our merchants, too,” Thompson said. “These are different times, to be sure, but this situation has given us the chance to ‘think outside the nest’ and do some things differently. The Duck Race volunteers will do everything we can to make this the very best Duck Race ever!”

Duck Bucks campaign seeks donors' dollars
Have you been looking for a way to support Estes Park businesses as they recover from recent COVID-19 closures while also spreading some Duck Race love?
It’s as easy as calling or emailing ‘Big Duck 2020’ Karen Thompson to make a donation to the Duck Bucks Campaign. Instead of simply asking local merchants to donate prizes for the 2020 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race, the planning committee has hatched a fundraising effort to give back to the merchants. Race fans will still win hundreds of prizes at the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race on Saturday, Sept. 19, but funds for many of the prizes will come from a combination of event budget reallocations and donations from sponsors and Estes Valley residents.
The 2020 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race is supporting local merchants who donated prizes in 2017, 2018 and 2019 by purchasing gift cards (Duck Bucks) that winners can redeem at the businesses.
To donate, or for more information, contact Thompson at bigduck@epduckrace.org or by phone at 970-590-9942.

Rotary Quote of the Week
"Social distancing has exacerbated the loneliness epidemic, which is also a public health crisis, contributing to millions of 'deaths of despair' globally every year. But this period of sheltering at home helps us all develop a deeper empathy for those who are isolated most of the time. Suddenly, many millions of people are experiencing the kind of loneliness that had been reserved for much smaller numbers.
When social distancing ends, I believe we'll have a newfound appreciation for face-to-face connection. Sure, we've learned to use tools like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts - and they help. But we'll also see that virtual connection is no substitute for the real thing."
