March 21 meeting highlights
President Dave Evans called the meeting to order at 12:05, and he celebrated our growing minutes of daylight and the arrival of spring.
Bill Smith made an announcement about the death of Ken Cole on March 17. He was a member of our club for 14 years and had previously been a member of a Rotary club in McPherson, Kansas for three. Rich Hause was his RCEP sponsor. Services will be held in June at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Bill also announced the death on March 20 of Gary Trunnell, a former club member from 2005-12. Gladys Van Drie was his sponsor.
Ken Cole and Gary Trunnell
Madison Casey provided our Invocation, Pete Sumey guided us in song and Pledge, and he and also introduced guests, including Audri Smith, Marcia Tavel and Carl Robicheaux. Karen McClure happily served as Greeter. Our Jokester, Scott Thompson, was absent, so we were (alas) humorless.
Peter Sinnott and Chip Sproul coordinated their Rotary attire Thursday, wearing matching green shirts. A discussion ensued at the table on the merits of owning an iron.
Happy Money
Bill Solms said we should all be happy that he wasn’t telling today’s joke.
Dave Evans was happy for his neighbor, Bill Solms, who came to his aid and that of his snow-embedded car.
Gladys Van Drie was happy to have seen her first bluebird and excited to begin feeding her growing brood freeze-dried mealworms.
Trudy Collar was glad to have been in one place all winter and in attendance at club meetings.
Madison Casey was happy about the program because his granddaughter Maggie was an intern at the EP Museum last summer.
Bill Solms was happy (yet again) for the informative program on our Foundation presented on March 7.
Bob Brunson was happy to have his motorized scooter with him.
Karol Rinehart was happy to see that Bob Brunson was back!
Announcements
Jack Boatman reminded club members that the deadline for the Foundation’s matching grants program is fast approaching. Write a check before March 31 to have it doubled. Details below.
Tara announced that this year’s scholarship applications are available for review at the EVPL. She welcomed new reviewers and offered to help them with the process. She reminded us of the need for volunteers for two community service events – the April 27 town clean up prior to the Duck Race and the June 8 Recycle Day.
Gregg Jurgens invited all Duck Sorters to the first round of tossing/laughing/sorting at the storage shed on Woodstock after the 3/31 meeting.
Program
Gladys Van Drie introduced two knowledgable speakers and a great program on what’s new at the EP Museum and how best to protect our valuable home collections.
Mikaela Fundaun encouraged us to mark our calendars to May 31 at 10 a.m., the Grand Re-Opening of the museum. We were treated to a sneak preview of remodeled spaces, which promise a more welcoming visitor experience, an interactive space for children and families, a new welcome film, improved staff and volunteer space and a reoriented program space. Collections are being moved from storage at EP Power/Light to the Museum Annex, formerly known as the Senior Center. The museum will be open, beginning May 31, from Wednesday to Saturday year-round.
Jessica Michak then told us that garages, attics and basements are not ideal spaces for our treasured family heirlooms, whether made of paper, metal, textiles, wood or mixed composition. A desired location would be temperature-, light- and humidity-controlled. Choose an extra room in your house or designate a closet for storage, buy archival boxes and acid free paper to protect items from mold, mildew, general wear and tear, over-handling, and a host of colorful and creepy pests. Make copies of old newsprint to avoid degradation, wear white cotton gloves to handle items, store keepsakes at least 6” off the floor, and don’t use metal or scented hangers for clothing you wish to preserve. Remove metal buttons from old uniforms. For more information, contact the EP Museum.

Rotary Quote of the Week
Q: What’s (Priority) No. 4?
A: In June 2020, the United Nations will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN charter. Rotary has been involved with the UN since before the UN began. Because of that, I want to focus on Rotary’s relationship with the United Nations. The annual Rotary-UN Day will be returning to the UN headquarters in New York after having been in Geneva and Nairobi. We also hope to have three presidential conferences focusing on Rotary’s relationship with specific UN agencies at different locations around the world and a final celebration of Rotary’s UN relationship before the convention opens in Honolulu, Hawaii.
