One of our speakers at the District Conference in Lander last month talked about how we need to “teach” Rotary. So how do we go about teaching Rotary? Well, we tell our story of service. Each of us has a story of why we are involved and the value and meaning we take away from being in Rotary. I’m going to ask you to share that experience in the coming year. More about that later.

But I’m also going to ask that you invite two friends to Rotary sometime this year. Don’t ask them to join. No one likes to be pressured. Just take them to lunch. And maybe, just maybe they will catch the spirit of service and the joy of giving back to our world.

July 7, 2022 Meeting Notes

Announcements:

Ron Gordon announced that a $4,900 Grant was awarded to Amaro Tan camp in Albania.
A Duck Race committee meeting will be held July 14 at 5:00 PM.
A John Denver Tribute concert will be sponsored jointly by our club and the local Lions club in September.
- Tickets are for the September 3rd Concert are now on sale on the internet at JohnDenverTributeConcert2022
The Rotary golf tournament for scholarships will be held Friday, September 16th.
The club Foundation meeting will be held Thursday, July 21st at the Quality Inn at 1:30 PM.

Tom Maher is glad to be back from serious knee surgery and several months in the hospital.

Beth Weisberg was able to hike to Bluebird Lake after back surgery. She is happy to be Lame Duck.
Jim Whiteneck is happy he is not running this meeting.

Today’s speaker, Maggie Cotreau, is not able to be present due to Covid exposure.

Annie filled in with a video documenting the early days of Rotary International creating the polio prevention program.

Duck Race Committee Meeting

Announcements:

In order to properly set in place a new software protocol to run the Duck Race in time for 2023, the Tech Committee needs to know by mid-August 2022 what the DR Committee envisions.

Please encourage your DR volunteers

- to attend our next mid-summer meeting on July 14th at 5pm in the Hondius Room at the the Library

We will have a progress report, and as Big Duck I would like to hear from all of you, especially new members, regarding any ideas or interest you might have in this great, traditional event.

Carol Holtgrewe

“Carol Holtgrewe is the most compassionate person I have ever known”. This statement was heard countless times in Carol’s life. She was always thinking about how she could be of help to other people and at the same time, not wanting recognition for her service.

Carol grew up on a farm in southeast Nebraska and was proud of her agricultural heritage. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and soon married Virgil Holtgrewe on May 8, 1955. During their 67 years of marriage, they traveled to 6 continents and enjoyed every trip.

This great compassionate person passed away June 22, 2022 because of respiratory problems. She was 91 years old and is survived by her husband, Virgil. Other survivors include two daughters, Claire Holtgrewe, Jan (Terry) Ostrom, grandsons Tyler and Lance Ostrom.

Carol was an eager volunteer who was always ready to serve in the church knitting scarves and hats, cooking meals, and completing administrative tasks. Working at the Jeffco Food Bank and driving for Meals on Wheels (for 35 years!) was a passion. The years volunteering at the National Western Stock Show allowed her to enjoy her artistic talents. She was the “behind the scenes” person who would get the job completed.

Working as a draftsperson with the United State Geological Service brought her great joy. These renowned geologists provided the ideas for many of the recreational trips around the world.

She was dedicated to her family and making sure they were all having a good time, listening to a good story, and always positive to all the problems that might come.

Carol Holtgrewe’s Celebration of Life will be held on July 30, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society, 1901 Ptarmigan Trail, Estes Park, Colorado, 80517. This uplifting casual event with refreshments will be open to all from 3 to 5 pm in the Dining Room of the Senior Apartments. There will be a short service at 3:30 pm to recall how compassionate Carol was about the service she gave to other people. Masks are recommended.

In lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions can be made payable to Crossroad Ministry and sent to the Allnutt Funeral Services, 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, Colorado 80517.
