Jan 17 meeting highlights
President Dave Evans called the meeting to order and reminded members of two additional meetings today: the club’s Foundation Board, 1:20 p.m. at the Quality Inn: and the Duck Race Committee, 5 p.m. at Nicky’s. Guy Van der Werf provided an invocation on the meaning of life. With spirited accompaniment by Madison Casey, Dave led us in singing “I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover” and then we joined Dave in the Pledge of Allegiance. Larry Williams introduced visiting Rotarian Dave Boon of the Fort Collins After Work Club. Guests of Rotarians included John and Dona Cooper, Leslie Van der Werf, Pat Newsom and Alexis White.
Happy Money – No one was happy! C'mon everybody - let's get happy!
Announcements
Ron Gordon, International Service Director, shared the news that District 5440 would add $1,400 to our club’s pledge of $700 for Nehemiah Gateway's Amaro Tan Summer Program in Albania. With the district grant, the summer program for Roma children is fully funded.
Jack Boatman added to the celebration with the news that Nehemiah Gateway raised $34,000 in its end-of-year fund drive, a significant milestone in the club's quest for a Global Grant. The Nehemiah Gateway funds will be added to the contributions from our club, ($2,500 from the club and $2,500 from the Foundation), the $10,000 matching funds that District 5440 has approved, and hopefully $29,000 in matching funds which will be requested from Rotary International that will result in a Rotary International Global Grant that will provide a Learning Center for children with disabilities in Albania. If you can follow that, you are a Grant Master! Just know that our district and R.I. can greatly multiply our club's efforts for needy children in Albania.
President Dave asked for volunteers for the Community Café on February 1. Contact him if you can take a shift as a server or help with set-up. He is handling the Community Cafe event for Roger Thorp, whose doctors are collaborating to hopefully minimize Roger's chemo side effects.
New Member Recognition
Dave presented Heidi Cooper with her Certificate of Membership. Harriette Woodard is Heidi's sponsor.
Gordon Ulrickson, John Thomason and Matt Comstock received their member badges. Anne Slack received a pin for sponsoring John; Lee Lasson for sponsoring Gordon.Scott Thompson, Matt's sponsor, will receive his pin at an upcoming meeting.
Gordon Ulrickson gave us a new member presentation in which he described his early life in Minnesota, his pride in receiving a Rotary scholarship when he was a high school senior in Denver, his military service as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist, and his subsequent career in technology. While he retired this year, he still works part-time for the YMCA of the Rockies as a consultant, and he enjoys being a ham radio operator and private pilot.
John Thomason provided his new member presentation in which he said he was a Colorado native who has moved around the country learning new culinary skills and working in a family business. His interest in cooking began at the age of 4, inspired by his grandmother. A former Nebraska ranch owner, he considers New England seafood to be his forte, skills he honed in Maryland. He is hoping to open a restaurant at a well-known location in Estes Park. Stay tuned!
Program Guy Van der Werf introduced our speaker, Karen Mosier Nicholson, who presented on 911 for 911. A former member of our club, she was welcomed by many friends. 911 for 911 is a nonprofit that focuses on Colorado, but aspires to have a national presence. The goal is to provide mental health support to first responders and to nurture their natural resiliency. While each first responder has the potential to save between 25,000 and 75,000 lives during his/her career, the calling/vocation exerts a heavy toll in stress, silence and suicide. Nicholson’s hope is to strengthen the robust peer support already present in Northern Colorado, to train first responders to recognize symptoms of PTSD in their peers, to bring in professional help where needed, to eventually build a stand-alone first responder-only treatment facility, and to provide a national training network. Current focus is education/awareness of resources among first responders. Karen was delighted to receive a Piece of the Rock and to dedicate a book, Cows to the Rescue, to the children's library.
The meeting was adjourned with the 4-Way Test.

New program!
Double your gift to a local charity
Our club will not be conducting a community grant program during 2019. In recent years the funds available for distribution via the community grant program have been decreasing and the number of worthy applicants have been increasing. In lieu of the community grant program the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation will be implementing a matching charitable donation program to supplement donations to local non-profits from club members.
The maximum matching donation amount for 2019 is $100 per member. The Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between January 1 and March 31, 2019. The Foundation will be providing matching donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State. The Foundation has designated approximately $6,000 for the matching charitable donation program for 2019.
The application form which provides detailed instructions is available on the club website and will be available at the weekly club meetings.

Rotary Quote of the Week
"Leaders lead by example. Good leaders never ask members to do something they’re not doing themselves. If you’re a club leader, are you asking members to contribute to the Rotary Foundation or to work on fundraisers and projects without matching their efforts? Are you allowing everyone in the organization to observe what you’re doing? Are you out front leading by example?"
