Eagle Rock, RMNP collaborate to enhance science, leadership lessons

Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center and Rocky Mountain National Park embarked on a partnership in 2008 to engage students in their education by developing opportunities for students to connect with national parks and the outdoors. Both organizations desired to increase relevancy of national parks for youth diversity of employees and user base.

Jon Anderson, instructor at Eagle Rock School, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, October 5, at their regular noon meeting.  Anderson and Eagle Rock students plan to discuss the program.

Jon Anderson

Anderson works in the Human Performance Outdoor Education Department at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center in Estes Park. Jon has worked as an instructor at Eagle Rock School for the past 15 years and served as a house parent for seven years. He is responsible for running the Internship and Citizen Science program with RMNP and teaches other experiential science and leadership based classes.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 1.2 million Rotary members in 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary clubs have been serving communities worldwide for more than a century. Rotary clubs around the world initiate projects that address critical issues such as conflict resolution, hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park meets Thursdays at the Rodeway Inn in Estes Park, located at 1701 North Lake Avenue on Highway 34 just west of Dry Gulch Road. Visitors interested in learning more about Rotary and its programs are welcome to attend.  Buffet is served at 11:30 a.m., the Rotary business meeting opens at noon, and the program begins at 12:30 p.m.

Sept. 28 Meeting Highlights

President Kathy Groesbeck called the meeting to order. Karen Thompson gave the invocation. Dave Evans led us in singing two verses of “America”, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Karol Rinehart led introductions.  We welcomed Michael Aldrich, President of Sunrise Rotary, and Tom Towns who has been visiting us. Mike Aldrich came to thank us for helping at Autumn Gold Festival last weekend in the horrid weather.

Announcements
  • Today was the last day of Farmers’ Market and President Kathy thanked all of those who worked this summer. She said all the vendors were asking for Jim Austin who has been away the last few weeks tending to health issues. The vendors assembled a gift basket of their products for him.
  • Kathy reported that Robert Ludlum had passed away. Plans for services are to be announced. It may be a joint service with his wife Janet. We remembered his constant optimism and happy nature as he gave Happy Money every week and rejoiced in Life.
  • Kathy said Nancy Stevens' Celebration of Life yesterday was glorious. It was actually a concert of world-class music by the piano duo from Austin and Moscow and our own local singers Nancy Bell and Scott Anderson. Her daughter Kim is a chip off the block.
  • The week before we said goodbye to Ken TeSelle at his service that was a full house at Community Church. The tributes by his sons were very moving. “Humble and Kind” was the theme which was so fitting.
  • Kathy reminded us to vote on the five candidates for our own club logo on the table, or to vote for none.
  • Scott Thompson is assembling volunteers for Elk Fest this weekend to serve beer. He has logo glasses for sale today for $5.Then Scott told a joke.
  • Kathy said we received a nice thank you note from the Veterans’ Monument Committee for our donation. Their goal is to have the monument installed by Veterans’ Day.
  • Mike Connolly reported for Roger Thorp that our Community Service Committee is cleaning our Estes Park greeting rock on Highway 36. Roger needs a pickup truck with a big water tank to supply the pressure washer. He also needs masonry brushes to scrub with.
  • Rita DuChateau gave a report on our FEMA couple, the Bonzas. Dale is working 84 hour weeks with her colleagues in Florida. Chuck was evacuated from the Virgin Islands and then sent back by ship and told to bring his own water purifier.
Happy Money
  • Pete Sumey is carrying a bag of sugary snacks to remind him of what he is not supposed to eat. He has lost 15 pounds and is feeling much better so he donated a dollar per pound. Karen Thompson jumped up to join him and display her treat bag as well.

Carrying around the treats they cannot eat is helping them to shed pounds!

  • Doug Mann is happy that his son had successful surgery for a brain tumor that was crushing his pituitary gland. He is back at work in the Navy!
  • Bill Smith is happy for Ken Cole’s birthday, and then we all sang to him.
Club Assembly
We then assembled into committee meetings which is normal practice on fourth Thursdays in Kathy’s term.

Adjournment
After 30 minutes of meetings Kathy adjourned the club.

Rotary Quote of the Week

"The spirit of warm community that is so central to Rotary also defines Toronto, our host city for the 2018 Rotary International Convention. Toronto is one of my favorite cities. It's a place where half the population is from another country, where over 140 languages are spoken by 2.8 million residents, and where no one ever seems to be too busy to be helpful. In additional to being clean, safe, and friendly, Toronto is a wonderful place to visit, with its attractive Lake Ontario waterfront, great restaurants, one-of-a-kind museums, and interesting neighborhoods to explore."
