Mindy Rickard
 
Mindy Rickard is retired from working in Long Term Care and with older adults for over 30 years  in Northern Colorado.  She has a degree in Gerontology from the University of Northern Colorado.  She is an active volunteer at the Estes Valley Library where she facilitates The Book Club for Mortals and helps individuals complete their medical advance directives by appointment.

Update from President Anne Slack
 
I had planned to update you on our Board Meeting last Tuesday, but something happened at that meeting that I want to share with you instead. I’ll write an article below so you can catch up on what happened at the March Board Meeting. Here I want to fill you in on a wonderful project that is going on in Estes. Several of our Rotarians are involved and I want to support them.
 
Pete Sinnott is the member I am most aware of working on Estes Dementia Day Center (EDDC). Pete had spoken to our Foundation, and those Board members recommended he speak to our Club Board to get the approval of his request to the Foundation for $25,000 since all our money, Club, Foundation, and Duck Race is Club money.
 
After approval of a Consent Agenda of Board Minutes from February 4th and Treasurer’s Report, Pete proceeded to present to us this project. The group is working to become a 501c3 but is currently working under the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center. They plan to hire a qualified Executive Director and Program Director in the Fall of 2025.  For now, they are working to raise $500,000.
 
The intent is to provide a safe haven where a family member with dementia can be left for several hours while their caregiver can have a respite.  The plan is to have trained volunteers to assist with the care of these loved ones while they are at the EDDC.  The people working to bring this project to fruition would like to open January 1, 2026, with a possible location at the Masonic Lodge for a rent of $2,000 a month.
 
I personally know of five families in the situation of being 24/7 caregivers. We desperately need such a facility in Estes Park. The group that is developing the program is being realistic and thoughtful about what they need to establish to succeed.
 
In the March 4th Estes Valley Voice, there was an ad from The Estes Dementia Day Center steering committee.  They will host a “Meet, Greet and Help” open house on Wednesday, March 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 880 MacGregor Ave., Estes Park. Please consider going to help this wonderful goal.  By the way, our Board voted to support the Foundation’s approval of $25,000 for this project.

Meeting Notes 3-6-25
 
President Anne Slack called the meeting to order.  
Invocation by Bill Smith.
Annie led the Pledge of Allegiance.
We sang “America” accompanied by Madison Casey.

  • Jay Harroff brought his daughter, Daphne Harroff. 
  • Ben Van der Werf’s wife Valerie joined us again today.
Annie recognized Jack Ford’s birthday and Davis’s anniversaries.
 
Announcements:
 
  • Annie reported for Ron Gordon that our club has attained our goal of 100% Paul Harris status.  On April 24, pins will be awarded and she hopes Thor Homme can attend as he donated his points.
  • Scott Robbins said we will have potluck/hosted dinners on Friday April 18. We need five host homes to entertain 6 other club guests. Host provides entrée and guests bring all the sides including beverages. Two hosts are Jim Whiteneck and Jim Jonell. Sign up to host. 
  • Tim Moore said he will chair the Duck Race Committee meeting today, here, after this meeting, in Scott Thompson’s absence. We held Kick Off event February 27, and 74 organizations enrolled. Adoptions opened online two days ago. Tim updated us on all aspects of the race. We need volunteers for the day, and to set up and take down, and also the next day for take down. April 10 we will sort ducks.

Happy Money:
 
  • Suzy Blackhurst is celebrating her birthday and her “second birthday”.  She said that when she completed her stem cell transplant 5 years ago, the medical people said that at five years she could celebrate her “second birthday”, and so she has made it!
  • Jay Harroff was happy to be back at our club.   He recalled how he used to give Daphne Updates about their daughter, so today he brought us up to date on Daphne’s life since she graduated EPHS in 2020.  She has lived in several states since then, but she now lives here and is Jay’s caregiver. 
  • Jim Austin was happy for Suzy’s good health and Daphne with us. 
  • Madison Casey was happy for a fun vacation with his children in California, and for seeing a Shelter Box billboard in the Santa Barbara airport. 
  • Annie was happy for Suzy and remembered the late Wayne Anderson.
Program: 
 
Jack Ford introduced the program. Nathan Scott told us about Foothills Gateway. They manage the Larimer County programs for intellectual and developmental disabilities for all ages, and partner with 70 organizations to serve.

March 4, 2025
Board Meeting Summary
 
As mentioned above, we opened with a Consent Agenda, and then proceeded to hear Pete Sinnott speak about the Estes Dementia Day Center (EDDC), and Jim Austin speak about his work on helping us to revise our Bylaws. Guy Van der Werf, Beth Weisberg, and Annie Slack volunteered to help Jim with revising the Bylaws and considering possible Policies.
 
The President’s Report was to be sent by email to make up for time after the two earlier reports.
 
Karen Thompson, Past President reported on the Foundation’s Board meeting where Pete had spoken about the EDDC and sending $1428 to help with the wildfire restoration in California.
 
Jack Ford, President Elect, had no report.
 
Under Old Business, a vote to make the Duck Race Committee into a Directorate was canceled due to research by Jim Austin that our normal directorates serve broad functions for operations within the club.  The duck race is different in that its function is as a single community service and a fundraiser for outside nonprofit organizations.
 
Under New Business a motion was passed to support the Foundation in their agreement to support the Dementia Day Care Center with a donation of $25,000.  Another motion was passed to send money earned in tips at Elkfest from 2024 and 2025 to Polio Plus.
 
Committee Reports included:
 
Duck Race Committee: Scott Thompson
74 organizations signed up with 13 new organizations; $15,000 raised for sponsorships which is half of what is needed.
 
Fund Development Committee: Tara and Phil Moenning
Contract signed for December 9 for fundraising dinner.
 
Membership Committee: Scott Robbins
Ron Gordon and Guy Van der Werf will help Scott Robbins research reunion event for former members of Rotary.
Ideas from the Membership Pillar 2nd meeting:
  • Develop new collateral material for membership recruitment.
  • 50% membership discount for new members.
  • Looking for big speaker 4x a year. Collaborations with the Library and Rocky Mountain Conservancy. Charge a fee for the speaker.
  • Increase service activities in social events.
  • 5th Thursday is social activity.

President’s Night is June 12 at the Legion from 5pm – 8pm.

Today during Interact Club, 
KIVA:
3 Kiva loans were given out. 
 
Car Wash Fundraiser: the students chose Saturday, May 10th for the Car Wash at the Lumber Yard. They felt it would be somewhat warmer by then.  Someone needs to contact the lumber yard to lock in the date and pick a timeslot.  
 
RYLA and YRYLA: 
  • We didn't have any 7th graders (YRYLA) today (most were out ill) and only 4 8th graders.  YRYLA brochures were given to Erin Berryhill who will distribute them to her 7th graders and perhaps we'll get one to sign up for YRYLA?
  • RYLA - we passed out brochures again today and reminded students to sign up soon. 
Youth Exchange:
Naomi McDonald joined us today to talk about her 2023/2024 International Youth Exchange in Ecuador.
