Thanks to the Estes Park Rotary Club Foundation led by Carl Robicheaux for their decision to match up to $5,000 of donations for the Ukrainian Disaster Response efforts made by the Club.
These matching funds will make an ENORMOUS difference!
We’re looking forward to the Directors’ updates from our Committees on Thursday.
You’ll find that our Club’s activities are “doing good” in Estes and around the world.
March 17, 2022 Meeting Notes
President Jim Whiteneck called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm after a Club picture was taken by Gordon Slack. President Whiteneck led the Pledge of Allegiance. Pete Sumey gave the Invocation. Madison Casey led the song “When Irish Eyes are Shining”.

Dennis Gelhaus introduced his wife, Roberta.
Guy Van der Werf introduced his wife, Leslie.
Annie Slack introduced her husband, Gordon.
Jim Whiteneck introduced Richard Jess (RJ) who has just applied for membership.
Donna Chapel introduced herself. She is a visiting Rotarian from Fort Collins, Colorado.
Announcements:
Anne Slack announced that Gail Corrigan turned in her Good Beginnings Checklist, which new members all have to complete.
Anne is looking for more volunteers to call 350 merchants to solicit Duck Race prizes.
Merchants usually gladly give a prize if contacted.
Please contact Anne to volunteer and she will provide further information for you.
Greg Jergens said there will be a “Duck Sorting” party at the Quality Inn after the April 7th meeting. Please mark your calendar.
Jim Whiteneck announced that the Ukrainian contributions so far are >$3,500 and our club is considering matching all donations from our club.
If anyone has already donated through the National organization, please let Longley Parker know, so he can include that for our matching funds.
We will collect checks again next week.
Beth Weisberg announced that according to the Charity Navigator website, Rotary International is rated with a perfect score of 100 and a 4 star rating of excellence, which is the best you can achieve. So, it is the best way to donate for Ukraine.
Jim announced that Bill Solms and Dennis Gelhaus are still looking for a volunteer/nomination for the President-Elect position.
The Foundation Board Meeting is today at 1:30 at the Quality Inn.
Next week, we will hear activity summaries from each of the Committee Chairpersons.

Program:
Dennis Gelhaus introduced his friend of 30 years, Tom Chapel. Tom is an experienced mountaineer and probably knows RMNP and all its trails better than anyone. Tom made a fabulous presentation on his Denali Adventure including all the necessary training and equipment. He and his 4-person team successfully climbed >13,000 feet to the summit starting from a point part way up the mountain that they were taken to by helicopter. It took 16 days, stopping at 5 camps, not including the base camp, and 2 days to descend. They each carried 50 – 60 lbs. of gear plus a sled with more gear. The biggest tasks were setting up camp, tearing down camp and making water, which could each take 2 hours. There were times when people “punched through the snow bridge”, falling 10 – 20 feet through the snow into a crevasse. But, each team is roped together, so they can pull someone out.

Dear Club Members, we need Merchant Prize Volunteers.
Please help us to follow up with businesses we have not heard from since mailing a prize request form to them.
We have approximately 350 merchants who usually gladly give a prize if contacted personally either by phone or in person.
Often they are just busy and forget so a reminder helps them and us. We want these prizes to enhance our Duck Race so there are lots of winners.
Anne Slack can send you a packet of business names, 5, 10 or 20 merchants that you may contact.
She can send you
the Volunteer Instruction sheet,
a list of merchants and
the prize donor form all electronically by email.
Or she can bring it to you in hard copy.
Thanks to everyone who has signed up.
We welcome anyone else who wants to help contact businesses for prizes.
International Committee Spearheads Local Fundraising for Rotary Relief to Ukraine
Our Rotary Club of Estes Park is taking the initiative to encourage contributions to the Rotary International Disaster Response Fund to support disaster response grants to districts in Eastern Europe affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These expedited Disaster Response Grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing. Our own club foundation will consider an additional donation in addition to this call to our members to donate.
Contributing to the Rotary International Foundation Disaster Response Fund has been recommended and encouraged by:

Timeline
Our target date for completing this effort is March 31, but prompt donations will be appreciated, as the need is immediate!
The treasurer of the Noon Rotary will forward donations to the RI Foundation frequently because of the urgency of the situation.
A listing will accompany these mailings of each donor and amount.
Donations will be accepted after March 31, but the spirit of this “deadline” is to quickly supply as much aid as possible through the RI Disaster Response Fund to Rotary Districts in Eastern Europe that are supplying needed water, food, medicine, shelter, supplies, and clothing.
Amaro Tan Playground Plaque

Children at Amaro Tan Playground
During a recent visit to Albania, NG USA Executive Director and Rotarian Michelle Mann was present for the installation of a very special plaque at the playground at Amaro Tan School.
The playground was installed last fall at the kindergarten, the result of a grant from Rotary Club of Estes Park and Rotary District 5440.
It features an age-appropriate play structure with slides, a swingset, a seesaw, and a refurbished sandbox.
The children at Amaro Tan enjoy it every day.
The plaque reads “The Amaro Tan School Playground, generously donated by Rotary,” in English and Albanian, and features the logos of Rotary International, Rotary Club of Estes Park, and Nehemiah Gateway Albania.
Nehemiah Gateway Albania is incredibly grateful for Rotary Club of Estes Park’s support, which has brought aid and joy to many of the children we work with. Amaro Tan is a school for at-risk children living in extreme poverty.
The school provides a safe and supportive place for them to learn and grow—and now, a wonderful new place to play!
