EVFPD's John Jerome to present

Sept. 20 on fire prevention strategies

The Estes Valley was protected by the Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department from 1907 through 2010. In 2010, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District was formed. The mission of the Estes Valley Fire Protection District is to continue to provide the Estes Valley with superior fire prevention, fire protection, and emergency services.

John Jerome, the new Fire Marshall and Division Chief of Prevention, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, September 20. He will discuss fire prevention strategies and the Estes Valley Fire Protection District.

John Jerome

Jerome started his fire service career in 1993 as a volunteer firefighter in Rancho Santa Fe, California. In 2000, he transitioned his primary focus from Operations to Prevention  as a Fire Prevention Specialist for Rancho Santa Fe. Subsequently, he served as the campus Fire Marshal for Embry-Riddle University in Prescott, Arizona from 2014 to 2018.

In March 2018, John Jerome was sworn in as the new Fire Marshal and Division Chief of Prevention for the Estes Valley Fire Protection District. He brings a diverse background in suppression, prevention, investigation, training, fire service management, and community risk reduction. As head of the Prevention Division, he will be responsible for plan reviews and inspections, code enforcement, public education, and fire prevention.

He has an A.A. in Telecommunications and A.S. in Fire Science from Palomar College, and a B.S. in Fire Administration from Cogswell College. He has received many awards and accolades, including the 2012 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year award from San Diego County Fire Chiefs Association.

Sept. 13, 2018 Meeting Highlights

President Dave Evans called the meeting to order. Dave said we still need volunteers to staff the Farmers’ Market for the remaining time in September. Doug Mann offered today’s inspiration. Pete Sumey led us in singing “God Bless America” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Harriette Woodard led introductions. We welcomed Mel Rueppel from Sunrise Club. Harriette introduced Heidi Cooper who is visiting us for a second time. Chris Christianson is visiting us from a Rotary Club in Boerne, Texas. Scott Thompson told his joke of the day.

Scott said we are serving beer at Elk Fest again this year in Bond Park on Sunday September 30 and so he needs volunteers. Longs Peak Club will sell on Saturday. Last year we made $2,000 from this so it is important to our fundraising.

Announcement
Thor introduced Bill Marshall who is an author who has spoken to our club before and is the American Legion Post 119's finance officer. Bill gave us an overview of what the Legion is, what it does, who they serve. His message to us is their facility is available for other 501c3 organizations to hold events and fundrasisers, which incudes dinners and bingo.

Program
Marsha Yelick introduced Lisa Curtis of Via Mobility Services in Boulder.  They provide and operate the “Via” vehicles we see around here that provide transportation to appointments for senior citizens so they can “age in place” by staying in their own homes. Their drivers help riders from their front door to the bus and see them into the health facility, as needed.

Shred-a-thon date, request for sponsors

Club members have the opportunity to sponsor the October 13 Shred-a-thon, with their donations benefitting the scholarship fund.

"Please consider being a sponsor and help us to continue providing this service to our community and scholarships for our students," Tara Moenning asks.

The Oct. 13 Shred-a-thon will have some new features. Tara outlines them as follows:

1. We will be using a new vendor and will have two 6,000 lb. capacity trucks to increase our total available capacity by 20 percent.

2. We will be offering a new service to businesses/individuals that have 10+ boxes. For these businesses or individuals, who wish to be a sponsor for the trucks, we will be offering a scheduled appointment time and we will be expediting their loads. With sponsors for the trucks, we will be able to continue to make all donations available for scholarships.

3. There will be a minimum donation of $10 per box or bag. Remember, all donations go to our Rotary Scholarship Fund.

What to bring:
YES paper documents with paper clips, alligator clips, pendaflex and filing folders, remove plastic binders—NO PLASTIC.
NO  – x-rays, credit cards, DVDs, videos, tapes, hard drives, vellums, films, previously shredded material.

When and Where: Saturday, October 13, 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Church of the Rockies parking lot - partnering with the League of Women Voters and the Community Recycling Committee.
Each year the Rotary Club of Estes Park awards three academic scholarships of $8,000 each--$2,000/year for four years of undergraduate study. These are in addition to our endowed scholarships which are supported by funds donated in memory of former Rotarians. The Club works all year to raise money through various events to support our community’s students.

To find out more about this program and how you may help, or to schedule an appointment, please contact Harriette Woodard at 970-586-1040 or Tara Moenning at 970-577-0186.

Tara reminds us that most shredding places charge 0.89-0.99 cents/pound. A typical filled 16” x 13” x 10 ½  box weighs 28.5 lbs. If you took this box to Staples or UPS, you would be charged $25-$28 to have it shredded.
