Tom Day
 
Tom Day is a retired software engineer from Santa Clarita CA and an experienced public speaker with a broad range of interests.  Widely traveled, he has been to China, India, Russia 3 times, Norway, Zimbabwe, Belize, and Ethiopia. He has spoken at Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary clubs from San Diego to Ellsworth, Maine.  He and his wife live in Stevenson Ranch, Los Angeles.  On Thursday, June 2, 2022 we will have a lecture on the recent history of North Pole ice. Tom will cover the "general state of affairs in the Arctic Ocean" and other icy places. In his retirement Mr. Day has studied ice at the South Pole, permafrost in Siberia, and read books on this subject by authors Michael Mann, Gwynne Dyer, Naomi Klein, and others.

Announcements:
  • We pause this Memorial Day reflecting upon the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives to preserve our freedoms and way of life. Veterans Day (for all veterans) will be celebrated later this November. Today, however, I hope we can all make time to give honor to those who sacrificed their youth and futures.
  • Please have a wonderful time with your families and friends!

President Elect Dennis Gellhaus rang the bell at 12:00.
The Invocation was given by Karen Thompson.
President Elect Dennis led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Beth Weisberg, Big Duck 2022, introduced Duck Race Volunteers

  • Sue Yowell from the Learning Place,
  • Patty Klein from LWV,
  • Cindy Taylor from Western Heritage.
Announcements:
  • Karol Rinehart reminded members to sign up for Presidents Night.
  • Beth Weisberg announced the Duck Race wrap-up Zoom meeting tonight at 5:00 PM.
  • We are still looking for members to fill open positions on the club board and the Foundation board.
Program:
President Elect Dennis introduced the Club Director reports.
  • Chuck Bonza, Elementary School Project “Josh, the Baby Otter” reported:
    • Chuck reviewed the programs
    • asked club members for their support of this project.

  • Ron Gordon, International Services Director reported:
    • Ron shared that he grew up in Bangkok. This probably explains his affinity with International needs.
    • The club has been active in Albania with matching grants for a play area and summer camps for kids with issues.
    • The Ukraine relief fund from our Club is just under $20,000.

  • Gregg Jurgens Committee Member reported for Fund Development Director Tara Moenning:
    • The Shred-a-Thon, Golf Tournament, Scholarship Fund dinner are all active programs raising money for scholarships.
    • Proceeds from the John Denver concert cosponsored with the Lions Club will also go to scholarships.
    • 10 scholarships worth $43,500 were distributed to high school seniors by our club this year.
    • Gregg reminded us of the importance of supporting our club Foundation and the Rotary international Foundation when we pay the club dues.
    • Remember to write separate checks for the foundation donations.

  • Beth Weisberg, Big Duck for 2022, reported:
    • The Duck Race was a huge success.
    • 9,643 duck adoption tickets were sold resulting in a distribution of just under $162,000 to local charities.

Announcement:
  • Annual dues invoices were sent out through ClubRunner.
  • Due back by June 27 to be able to report our club membership count to Rotary International as of June 30.
  • Dues remain at $290 for the year and can be paid by check or by credit card ($300 if using a CC)
  • Payment details are included in the invoice you received by email
  • Please complete and return the Club Service Opportunities Form along with your dues, or bring it to a club meeting.
