Hands Only CPR – This presentation trains people how to perform CPR compressions to help maintain blood flow to the brain. It has been proven to be effective in helping victims survive. This is not a certified class and does not include rescue breathing. The use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) will also be covered.
Biography:
Cynthia (Cindy) Holmes has worked as a nurse at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins and Banner Hospice of Northern Colorado. She retired in 2020 to spend more time with her husband. During the Cameron Peak fire she decided she missed helping people and decided to become a Red Cross Volunteer. She is currently the DHS (Disaster Health Services) Lead for Northern Colorado. Her work includes helping in shelters locally and sometimes other states during disasters. She trains and mentors other DHS workers. She also enjoy presenting programs such as Hands Only CPR and Stop The Bleed at preparedness fairs, professional groups, Boys and Girls Clubs, churches, scout groups, and many other venues. She is also involved with reunification activities, presenting youth preparedness programs, and conducting shelter surveys across the NOCO area.
Today Cindy is accompanied by Bill Howell, President Elect for Sunrise Rotary and former Red Cross Volunteer as Community Liaison Lead for Estes Park and the Government Operations Lead for Larimer County.

Bob Brunson and the Estes Valley Wall of Honor

American Legion Post 119 Gate leading to Estes Valley Wall of Honor
The Estes Valley Wall of Honor at the American Legion Post 119 was dedicated on August 30, 2023. The 100-ft.-plus wall will hold 2,400 commemorative tiles honoring individuals who have unselfishly served—or are serving—our nation or the community.
Rotary’s own Bob Brunson is remembered with a prominent tile on that wall. Lt. Cmdr. Brunson is a veteran of WWII, who earned his wings as a Naval aviator and his officer’s commission at Corpus Christi, Texas in December of 1942. He was a pilot in the first carrier borne night-fighter squadron in the South Pacific area in 1944. He participated in strikes from the carrier the U.S.S. Enterprise, on Kwajalein, the Marshall Islands, the Japanese stronghold on Truk, the Marianas Islands and the carrier battle in the Philippine Sea. Upon his return stateside, he was a night-fighter instructor and later, an engineering test pilot at the Naval Air Station in Vero Beach.
Bob joined Rotary in March of 2003. During the Happy Money portion of our meetings, Bob often stood up to express his sincere delight with being a member of Rotary and his friendships with all of us. A favorite moment for him was a big hug from Karol. We remember his many years of service to the Duck Race Committee and leading our participation with the Farmer’s Market. He would participate in our Showtime presentations. In 2013, Bob was honored as the Rotarian of The Year. He was also Co-Organizer with Vern Mertz of the Honor Flights of Northern Colorado.
We miss you, Bob.

It's time to quack up the old Rotary Duck Race machine!

Our first activity was to order some new, rubber tubs to store ducks in. We will shortly be ordering tubs to store the ducks in, replacing some worn out cardboard boxes. Our handymen will drill some holes in the tubs so the ducks can air dry their feathers and recuperate from the 2023 race. This will eliminate the need to dry the ducks in big trash cans, then transfer them to the boxes. With 10,,000 ducks, whatever we can do to simplify the process will serve us well!
Secondly, a big shout out to Jim Austin, Gregg Jurgens, Karen Thompson, and Jim Whiteneck. Along with me, we took a couple of trips over the past week to the Rotary shed to weed out stuff we no longer need for the race and/or other Rotary activities. After couple of hours work, the shed is ship-shape, i.e. we can now walk down the aisles in the shed! As a result of our efforts we will have a one-time only distribution of stuff to Rotary members attending the September 7, 2023 meeting. For example, you could go home with a printer, paper, extension cord, surge protector, plastic tub, or miscellaneous office supplies. Items are free or (if you choose) available for a small donation! Anything left after Thursday will go to the Village Thrift Store. Look for my grey GMC truck in the Legion parking lot before and after Thursday's meeting.
Finally, our Duck Race Committee will quack up for the 2024 race. We have reserved space at the Library for meetings on September 21, October 19, November 16, and December 21. Dates will be reserved for 2024 as soon as early bird reservations are available through the library. The primary item on the agenda for September is presentation of a 2024 budget. Thanks in advance to all of you who will be making the 2024 Rotary Duck Race the best ever!
