This week's speaker: Sheldon Rosenkrance
Topic: School district update

Sheldon Rosenkrance, Superintendent of the Estes Park School District, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, September 17, at their regular noon meeting. His program will update us on what is happening at our local schools.

Rosenkrance has been the new school superintendent for over a year. He has spent time with the principals, business manager, maintenance supervisor, teachers, students and various other staff and community members in order to get to know the district better and assess its needs.

He has been in education for 25 years, of which 15 years were as a high school principal. This is his second year as school superintendent. He has a great passion for providing the best educational opportunities for students, staff and community, and a strong commitment to the district. He looks forward to building on the strengths of the district in order to provide the best education possible for our children.

Sheldon is married and has four daughters, one of whom currently attends Estes Park High School.

Meeting Notes
Meeting Notes from Sept. 10, 2015

President Scott opened the meeting and welcomed all who were in attendance. Jeff Liddle provided the invocation and Dick Broman led the song “America” and the pledge. Lee Lasson introduced guests of Rotarians and visiting Rotarians. Janet Zeschin was visiting from the Longs Peak Club. She announced that her club is working on their fundraiser “Flamingo Flocking”.  Forms are available from Janet or anyone of the Longs Peak Club Members.  For a reasonable fee, you too can have your friends yard flocked or you can pay to not have your yard flocked.  All in good fun and the end result helps raise funds for scholarships.

Blue Badge
Jack Boatman was presented his blue badge by Rick Taylor and introduced himself to club members by presenting his two minute bio. He and his wife now make Estes Park their home after many years of vacationing to this area. Welcome to the club Jack!

Announcements
  • Tom Maher presented a flag from a rotary club he visited in Burma; The Rotary Club of Yangan. This club was originally founded in 1929 but with all the political upheaval through the years, the club was disbanded. It was reinstated in 2014.
  • Tara Moenning announced that the Shred-A-thon will be held on October 10th.  All volunteers are welcome.  Monies raised from this event benefit the scholarship fund.
  • Volunteers are needed to work at Elk Fest on October 3rd and 4th where our club will be helping to serve beer. Volunteers are also needed for Movies in the Mountains as well. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Scott Thompson.
Happy Money
  • Tom Maher was happy that he just returned from an 18-day river cruise with his grandson to Burma. Each night the boat would dock at various small villages along the route. Many of the villagers had never seen a white person so they became quite the celebrities.
  • Scott Thompson was happy to have Rick Taylor as a member and thankful for all his work with membership.  The club is still looking to find someone to take the position as Club Administrator.
Rotary Minute
Richard Kimple provided the Rotary Minute for the day.  He has been an active Rotarian for 43 years.

Program
Jack Overly presented the speaker for today’s program on the Cultural Arts Council.

Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship
The Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship Memorandum of Understanding
WHEREAS, the family and friends of Ron Kuhns wish to establish a scholarship to be administered by The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation (hereafter referred to as the Foundation) in the sum of $1,000; and
WHEREAS, such funds have been received by the Foundation; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation have gratefully received such funds to be utilized for the purposes intended; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation desire that this be a permanent endowment to the greatest extent possible;
NOW THEREFORE, the Trustees do establish the Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship Fund, to be administered as follows:
  1. Funds were received in the amount of $30,000 as of the date of this agreement (the “corpus”).
  2. For years following 2015, two calculations will be made by the Foundation:
a. The interest generated by the corpus over the period ending December  31th of each year will be calculated based on the average return  of the entire Foundation endowment fund.  This will be the base amount available for the scholarship award.
b. The amount of the scholarship of $1,000 for the student selected in May of each year.
  1. Should there not be a student identified the income (return) generated shall be added to the corpus.
  2. It will be assumed that the Kuhns funds will be incorporated into the other assets invested in the endowment portion of the Foundation.  The amount in the Kuhns corpus will, however, be separately identified in the Foundation reporting and for the purposes of calculating the return.
  3. The scholarship so awarded shall be a one year scholarship to a student who:
a. does not qualify academically for another scholarship being awarded that year;
b. is identified by the Scholarship Committee as possessing a passion for a unique field of study that, nevertheless, meets the general criteria for a Rotary Scholarship:
c. is pursing full-time studies at an accredited college, university, or technical/trade school;
d. is a citizen of the United States or permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship;
e. is a resident of Estes Park for the last 2 or more years;
f. applies for the scholarship through the Estes Park High School Scholarship Application process.
  1. The scholarship may be awarded at the Awards Night ceremony.
  2. In the event the amount in the Kuhns fund becomes insufficient to provide for the intended purpose, the Trustees may combine the then balance with other Foundation funds and administer them pursuant to the general purposes of the Foundation
Adopted at a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation this ________ day of ________________, 2015.

Rotary Quote of the Week

September is New Generations Month
New Generations refers to the youngest generation in the family of Rotary.  Many are participants in Rotary’s youth and young adult programs: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotary Youth Exchange. Others are service-minded young people involved in Rotary club and district activities ... Rotary clubs should be committed to involving youth and young adults in their vocational, community, and international service projects, and to providing programs and resources that support them.
