Update on District, National and International Topics of Interest
Since Lee's visit with us in May to talk about Shelter Boxes, Lee has toured the District extensively. She is excited to give update on all things District, National and International. This is a good time to remember our continuing quest to eliminate polio.
We are making great progress towards eradicating polio, however recent news reminds us that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere. Polio is being detected around the world in places where it hasn’t been found in decades. In the United States, an unvaccinated man was paralyzed by polio. In the UK, poliovirus has been detected in sewage samples. In Malawi, a child contracted polio. And Mozambique announced its first polio outbreak of wild poliovirus in 30 years.
Lee joined the Rotary Club of Fort Collins Breakfast club in 2003. She served her club as the Director of Club Administration from 2010 to 2012, President in 2013/14, Rotary Foundation Chair from 2015 to 2019, and is currently serving as Membership Committee Chair. In District 5440 Lee served as Assistant District Governor in 2015, Foundation Annual Fund Chair in 2016 / 2017 and as District Membership Chair from 2018 to 2021. Lee is a Paul Harris Fellow since 2008, a Paul Harris Society Member since 2011, a member of the Bequest Society, a Level 1 Major Donor and a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. Lee’s career with Hewlett-Packard spanned over 35 years and crossed many business functional areas. She then worked as a Senior Technical Project Manager for Intrado, a company that supports and enhances the national 911 emergency system. Her favorite work was a special project with NASA’s Director of the International Year of Astronomy. Lee and Catherine and their black Lab Molly live in Fort Collins. They have four adult children and eight grandchildren. They all enjoy spending time kayaking at the lake, hiking in the mountains and movie nights.

As you read this, I will be up in South Dakota celebrating my mother’s 93rd birthday! Family celebrations are always special and of course this one is no exception. Born in 1929 right before the great stock market crash, she has survived the Covid pandemic and everything in between. The joys and sorrows of a life well lived belong to her journey. Love ya mom!
This Thursday our DG Governor, Lee Varra-Nelson will share with us and will meet with our Board at 11:00am before our noon meeting.
Pumpkin distribution will be this Thursday morning! Those planning to help should be at the elementary school at 7:45am.

Carl will serve his gumbo for the Chamber of Commerce fundraiser on November 3.
Jim Austin gave his monthly presentation on Shelter Boxes and he put in his $10. He is asking our members to donate $10 or more to get 1,000 to sponsor one box. Elk Fest beer tips boosted the effort with $300 for this.
Jack Boatman said get your forms and write your checks to donate to your favorite charity which our Foundation will match up to $150 per member. Minimum is $50 donation increments. This offer will close in November. You can bring your form and checks made to the charity to our meeting, or mail to our PO box.
Dennis announced next week our District Governor will be our program.
Karen Thompson announced it is time to renew and recruit businesses to be on next year’s Friendship Card. She needs people to call on existing participants and recruit new ones. We have raised $30,000 in three years from this!
We viewed a Rotary video short on doing good in the world through giving.
Happy Money:
Scott Thompson was happy that Dave Evans & Karen McClure are here today. He is also happy that Jack Overly is celebrating his 93rd birthday. He relays that Jack appreciates this club very much and misses us. Jack will donate $93 to the foundation.

Barry Hannigan was happy to be back from an 8-state road trip, family weddings, cycling and recovering for 2 weeks from e coli infection.

Program:
Jim Whiteneck introduced our Fire Chief, David Wolf, who told us about the Estes Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). After, he introduced Steve Neilson of Newcomers Club who showed us a stick in colors to attach to fire hydrants to show where they are located under snow. They are raising money to put this $30 item on our 7,000 fire hydrants.

Double Your Donation to Your Favorite Local Charity!
2022 Matching Charitable Donation Program
The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation is conducting a matching charitable donation program this fall to supplement donations to local non-profits.
The maximum matching donation amount is $150 per member and the minimum donation amount is $50. Rotary Club of Estes Park members will be able to apply for matching donations from the Foundation between October 13 and November 17, 2022.
The Foundation will be providing matching donations to qualified 501(c)(3) organizations serving Estes Valley residents and in good standing with the Colorado Secretary of State.
The application form which provides detailed instructions is available on the club website and will be available at the weekly club meetings. You will also be receiving an email with the application form attached.

Be Part of Pumpkin Distribution at Estes Park Elementary
Rotarians preparing 2021 pumpkins
Please join us at Estes Park Elementary School this week, Thursday, October 20, at 8:00 a.m. sharp, to help set up rows of bright orange pumpkins in the school’s front parking lot! Teachers will bring their students out class by class starting at 8:30 a.m. that day so that each child can pick out a pumpkin to take home for free. Watching the kids’ excitement as they come out and see all of the pumpkins more than makes up for getting up early that day. This will be the 35th year that our Rotary Club has organized this event, with our local Safeway donating 500 pumpkins to make it happen.

The Community Service Committee will meet at the American Legion immediately following our noon Rotary meeting on Thursday, October 27. Please attend if you can. We will be making decisions about Bright Christmas, Blue Santa, and Give Next, and will have updates on Community Corner Café and the upcoming District Conference service project. Enter the Photo Contest for 2023 Friendship Card
Rotarians are Eligible to Enter!
The Rotary Club of Estes Park invites submissions to a photo contest for the 2023 Friendship Card for Local Discounts. There is no charge to enter, and the winner will receive photo credit on the card and two 2023 Friendship Cards. The deadline for submitting photos is Friday, October 28, 2022.
The Friendship Card debuted in 2019, replacing the long-time Rocky Card. The Rotary Club of Estes Park re-established the card as a fundraiser for club projects and community grants. The card has raised approximately $30K since its inception. Projects that have benefited from these funds include CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), EVICS, Blue Santa, the MRI project at EPH, and Bright Christmas, just to name a few.
Over 75 local businesses participate in providing some type of discount to cardholders. Each business displays a window decal announcing participation in the program.
Rotary is very thankful for all the participating businesses, especially the Estes Park News for their continuous advertising throughout the summer.
Entering is easy. Photos capturing favorite scenes from the Estes Valley or Rocky Mountain National Park can be emailed in high resolution, jpg format to epfriendshipcard@gmail.com. A panel of judges will select the winning photo. Cropping and slight color correction is allowed for photos, but judges will reject photos with anything added or deleted through a photo editing program.
All decisions of the judges are final. The winner will be notified via email. The winning photo may also be used on other marketing materials for the Friendship Card. Owner of the photo will not receive any other compensation other than photo credit and two 2023 Friendship Cards.
