Parking:  American Legion and the church only
Notes from the President

For the last few years we have not scheduled speakers for the 4th Thursdays, in order to allow committees to meet during our regular meeting time. I would like to revisit this with the club to determine if this schedule is still effective, worthwhile, and financially sensible. Keep in mind that we are obligated to pay the Legion for 20 meals each week that we meet, whether or not we have 20 people eating lunch at every meeting. The meetings on the 4th Thursdays have had much lower attendance than the first three meetings of each month. Please put some thought into this and be prepared to discuss it at a future meeting in August. I encourage you to share your opinions with me regarding this possible change, and look forward to weighing the pros and cons with each of you. You can either email me at  Karen.EstesParkRotary@gmail.com or call me at 970-590-9942.   Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers to Our Rotarian Nonagenarians
In Recognition of their Dedication to
Service Above Self

Plaque made by Pete Sinnott

This plaque was presented on President's Night to honor our members that are nonagenarians, 90 years of age or older, for their years of Service Above Self. There are five members in this special group: Virgil Holtgrewe, Harry Livingston, Lee Machin, Wayne Newsom and Jack Overly.  Virgil joined November 1, 1959 or 64 years ago.  Harry joined June 18, 1998 or 25 years ago.  Lee joined May 31, 1973 or 50 years ago. Wayne joined January 10, 1980 or 43 years ago and Jack joined November 4, 1979 or 44 years ago.  Between the five men, they have started RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, started the Duck Race, served as Rotary Presidents, designed programs for preschoolers, school age students and many fund raising projects for scholarships to present to our graduating high school seniors to assist them with the cost of higher education.

We hope this plaque will serve as a small reminder of their dedication to Rotary.

Andy Lenec Project

Andy Lenec is currently providing a ZOOM meeting every Monday at 10 AM to speak to people in Ukraine.  If you want to join in, you are most welcome.

Andy, son of a Ukranian refugee, developed a solar panel conversion project, from discarded solar panels, for recharging cell phones in a country whose power grid is unpredictable. Without cell phones, Ukranians are unable to communicate with each other or know when a missile attack is imminent.

July 10's meeting is described below:

On Monday our friend and young hero Denys Shevchenko will be our guest presenter. Den is from Chernihiv and I met him in 2017 when he was 15, a student and an active member of our English Club. We have stayed in touch and he has shared videos and pictures of his trips to Chernihiv when the war started to bring supplies and evacuate the elderly, and also some amazing footage from his apartment window in Kyiv recently. Den took the selfie above when I was giving a presentation at his school and he borrowed my camera. It's one my favorite pictures of all time! Please join us to hear from Den and see his photos and videos, and to get an update on Ukraine. We all share the responsibility of supporting our brave friends in Ukraine! Slava Ukraini!  6490975

Rotary Social with the Sunrise Club at Lazy B
September 15, 2023

In partnership with the Sunrise Rotary Club, we are trying to get 70 people signed up to go to the Lazy B on September 15. The cost is $40 per person for Rotary members. Please RSVP Annie Slack at anneslack@aol.com or (970) 231-6697. I would like everyone to prepay with a credit card so that I have a committed group to go.  Please advise Karol and/or Gregg what the money is for.  I have already requested the Lazy B save the date.  Quentin Wedan has offered to contribute $20 for every person over 70 toward scholarships.  Thanks for your attention and see you Thursday lunch. Bring your credit card.

Iowa, the Tall Corn State

Longley Parker amongst the corn!

They used to say if corn was knee high by the 4th of July it would be a good crop.  Guess it should be a good corn crop by the way it looks!! That is why Iowa is known as the “Tall Corn” State.

Positions are available for Membership Chair and Editor of the Spoke.  Both jobs are so fun.  You get to know new members and you can write stories about your fellow Rotarians!  It only takes as much time as you chose to contribute. Contact either Annie Slack at anneslack@aol.com or Karen Thompson at karen.estesparkrotary@gmail.com if interested.
Link for President's Night Video

Find Your Rotary Member Number

Do you know your member number?  I will be inserting one member's number in the Spoke somewhere each week.  If you find your number and let me know, I will add a dollar to the Happy Money jar.  Have fun reading the Spoke!
