Stories
This week's speakers: Tony Stafford, Daniel Borkovec
Topic: Success Center and Scholarships

Teacher Tony Stafford and high school counselor Daniel Borkovec of the Estes Park High School will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, November 12, at their regular noon meeting. Stafford will share information about the Success Center at EPHS, and Borkovec will discuss the Local Scholarship Program for students pursuing post-secondary education.

The Success Center Department at EPHS is an alternative-based program designed to serve students with a variety of educational needs within our conventional high school. The goal is to increase retention and to allow each student to attain higher favorable academic outcomes.  The Success Center is primarily for students requiring credit recovery for courses in core subject areas. In addition, the Center serves students who are challenged within the constraints of the traditional classroom. These students work on their courses in a smaller classroom environment where the work is self-paced. A full curriculum is delivered through OdysseyWare, an innovative eLearning program that is Board approved and aligned with the Colorado State Standards.

Additionally, the Success Center students are given considerable one-to-one attention and develop independent work habits. Approval from the student’s teachers, school counselor, and Success Center teacher is required for admission to the Success Center at Estes Park High School.

As the Success Center teacher, Stafford is excited to mentor, guide and assist students to “turn things around” and to be ultimately successful with their academics. Nothing gives him greater satisfaction.

Tony Stafford earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Texas Christian University and master’s degrees in Criminal Justice and Public Administration from the University of Central Florida. After working in the Sheriff’s Department as a Child Protective Services Investigator in Seminole County, Florida, he moved to Colorado to pursue his passion in health and wellness. He obtained his teaching certification in K-12 Physical Education from Metropolitan State University. He has taught for three years in the Estes Park School District, currently teaching in the Success Center. Also, he serves as the Assistant HS Cross Country coach. He is married and has one son.

Each year, generous members of our community donate towards the Local Scholarship Program for graduating seniors. The Local Scholarship Program is an asset to our high school students by helping to cut the heavy financial load of pursuing a post-secondary degree. Local scholarships demonstrate how much our community values the future of our students.

As an Estes Park School District high school counselor for four years, Daniel Borkovec works with donors and updates the Scholarship Application Packet each year. In addition, he organizes the application process and the ceremony for students that receive scholarships. Working with students for post-secondary planning is one of his favorite parts of being a high school counselor.

During the Rotary meeting, Borkovec will be working with the Noon Rotary to review their scholarships to make sure that we are accurately addressing the needs of our high school students.

Rotary Quote of the Week

In Rotary we believe, in spite of all that, in the possibility of peace – not out of idealism, but out of experience. We have seen that even the most intractable conflicts can be resolved when people have more to lose by fighting than by working together. We have seen what can happen when we approach peace-building in ways that are truly radical, such as the work of our Rotary Peace Fellows. Through our Rotary Foundation, peace fellows become experts in preventing and resolving conflict. Our goal is that they will find new ways not only to end wars but to stop them before they begin.

-K.R. Ravindran, 2015-16 Rotary International President
