 Cheley Colorado Camps
-a tradition since 1921

Cheley Colorado Camps were founded in 1921 by Frank Cheley and moved to its current location in 1926. The Camps are now under the leadership of the fourth generation of Cheley descendants. Cheley Camps are a private camp in Estes Park for children ages 9-17. The camps’ program instructs young people to respect the environment and their surroundings, teaches environmentally sound camping practices and builds lasting character and resiliency.

Cheley Camps have been able to accomplish its goals through a partnership with the National Parks and National Forests. Many campers have discovered the Estes Valley through first coming to Cheley as a young camper, only to return as an adult to make Estes their home.

Don Cheley, Director Emeritus for Cheley Camps, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, Aug. 16, at their regular noon meeting.

Don Cheley

Raised in Denver and Estes, Cheley graduated from Menlo School of Business Administration. He worked for various businesses and served in the Air National Guard. Eventually, he became the third-generation executive director, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

He is the past president of the Western Association of Independent Camps, national president of the American Camp Association, chair of the American Camp Foundation, board of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, Board of the Bank of Estes Park, past president of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy, and America’s Ambassador to the International Camping Fellowship.

August 9, 2018 Meeting Highlights

President Dave Evans welcomed members and guests to the Estes Park Rotary meeting to order at noon. Guy Van der Werf gave the invocation. Pete Sumey led us in song and the Pledge of Allegiance. Dennis Gellhaus introduced visiting Rotarians: Frank Haines, Sojourner, and his wife Tish, from Edna, Oklahoma; Sandy Begley, EP Morning Rotary; and Leslie Glover, President of EP Morning Rotary. Guests: Pat Newsom came to enjoy lunch with Wayne.

Announcements
  • Dave Evans reported that at the Board meeting this week Doug Mann and Sara Pita from Nehemiah-Gatewayasked for Estes Park Rotary help in adding a children’s annex for children with disabilities. Jack Boatman and Ron Howard will lead the effort to provide a Rotary Global Grant.
  • It was no joke that Scott Thompson was not there.
  • Leslie Glover requested our Rotary’s help in securing additional sponsors for morning Rotary’s Autumn Gold fundraiser. Last year, their event suffered from catastrophic rain and flooding that severely slashed their funding for charitable giving. Any connections we can give them would be most welcome. Sponsor opportunities range from $1500 to $100, and sponsors will receive publicity in event advertising. Please contact Sandy Begley.
  • Foundation Board members for the upcoming year have been elected. Madison Casey is the new Foundation President.
  • Next Thursday, Aug. 16, members are invited to attend a Foundation meeting at the Quality Inn at 1:15 pm to consider changes in grant policy. Change is needed due to increasing community requests for funds and our changing Rotary demographic.
  • Bill Solms welcomed Kevin Mullin, Estes Health Foundation CEO, to our club. Kevin was previously a Rotarian, and received a second Rotary pin. Tara Moenning was awarded her sponsorship pin for introducing Kevin to the club.
  • Ron Gordon was excited to announce that the Rotary Club of Alexandria, Egypt, has invited Rotarians from around the world for a 10-day motorcycle and scooter rally around the country in October. They hope to spread the word that Egypt is safe and thrilling to visit.
  • Jay Haroff sent an invitation for members to come meet Tuskegee Airman James Harvey, who was the first of his crew to fly over Korea in the 1950s. He will be at the VFW on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. The Rotary board will be donating Aug. 16 and 30 Happy Money to this event.

Happy Money
  • Wayne Newsom is overjoyed that he and Pat will be celebrating their 66thwedding anniversary on Aug. 10.
  • Pat Newsom is happy she has known Wayne for 69 years.
  • Karen Thompson is happy to be their daughter and that Wayne and Pat are her parents.
  • Pete Sumey is still happy about his recent trip to South Dakota and enjoyed seeing a sweatshirt of a bear with antlers and the slogan “BEER”.
  • Rita DuChateau is excited to report that Dr. Grant told her she healed up her wrist fractures in record time – like someone young. She can now begin PT.
  • Bill Solms is happy he can now pay off the rest of his fine for telling such a bad joke a few weeks ago.
Program
Rick Taylor introduced today’s speaker, Rene Moquin, who recently did volunteer work in China.

Rotary Quote of the Week

" It can be tempting, when our priority is service, to focus only on the things that look like service: the projects, the planning, the works that yields a visible benefit to those who need it. But to do that work effectively, we need to keep our own work in order. In Rotary, that means conducting ourselves in accordance with the principles of Rotary, treating others with respect and following the Four-Way Test. It means maximizing our impact by planning carefully and stewarding our resources wisely. And it means looking after the long-term health of our organization by ensuring that our membership is strong, engaged and healthy."
