President's Night promises fun, food and fellowship.
5:30 p.m. cash bar
6:00 p.m. dinner
7:00 p.m. program
It's time to say thanks and farewell to 2014-15 President Brad Rosenbaum and celebrate Scott Thompson's presidency, which begins July 1. The President's Night dinner and program will begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, June 25 at The Other Side, in our regular meeting room. The program will include installation of the 2015-16 club and foundation board members and special awards. Entertainment by pianist Scott Wilseck promises to be a highlight. The cost is $20. RSVP to Dana Fritz (dfritz@aol.com or 577-1270). Registration deadline is Monday, June 22.
What’s better than playing 18 holes of golf on a course with breathtaking views of the Continental Divide? Knowing that your registration fee supports college scholarships for Estes Park seniors. The 19th Annual Rotary Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, slated for Saturday, June 27, hopes to raise $12,000 for three academic scholarships.
To register for the tournament, download forms posted on the Estes Park Rotary Club website at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org. Registration and sponsorship forms are also available at the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course. Golfers with questions should call Bruce Carmichael at 303-946-6349.
The $100 fee includes green fees, cart, participation gift and snacks. Players with an annual 7-day membership at the Estes Park Golf Course pay $65. Registration ends Thursday, June 25.
Golfers also will vie for prizes in contests for putting, most accurate drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Each member of the winning team will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Estes Park Golf Course Pro Shop. Four winners of Closest to the Pin competition on Par 3 holes will take home $100 gift certificates to the Pro Shop. Many other prizes will be awarded.
The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a chip and putt contest prior to the 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at the 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course.
President Brad Rosenbaum called the meeting to order. Ann Slack offered the invocation. Pete Sumey led us in singing “In the Good Old Summertime” as it is finally summer. Chip Sproul introduced guests. We welcomed visiting Rotarian James Whittaker of Whiteneck, Arkansas and Tim Lee from Rotary International who is monitoring the grant RI made to Glen Haven recovery. Guests of Rotarans included the famous Daphne Harroff.
Announcements
President Brad reminded us that “President’s Night”, our changing of officers ceremony and dinner, will be Thursday June 25 here at the Other Side where we hold our meetings. Sign-up sheets and money was collected at each table. Contact Pete Sumey. There will be no regular club meeting that day. Social hour 5:30, dinner 6:00, program at 7:00. Price $20.
Golf Tournament is going very well, Bruce Carmichael reported. We have $13,400 in sponsorships and over 70 golfers. Join us June 27 at 1:30.
Tara Moenning read thank you letters from three of our scholarship recipients. Sarah Kozlowski will study business. Sam Westley is going to Front Range Community College and then plans to transfer to finish at a four-year program. Eric Edwards will attend Mesa College. 29 organizations in town awarded scholarships totaling $118,000. Our club accounted for $36,000 of this.
Happy Money
Jay Harroff gave $40 for two events. He is pleased about the dedication of the George Hix Plaza. George had 51 years of perfect attendance at our club and Jay is proud that George recruited him into our club. Secondly, he is happy that Daphne is going into grade 8 and will attend camps this summer including RYLA.
Larry Corbett was happy to have attended his granddaughter’s high school graduation and for the family who was reunited there when their son surprised them by returning from the military to see his brother graduate.
Tom Maher was also happy for the George Hix Plaza dedication as George was a charter member of our club.
Special Announcement
Brad said the board had approved Don Widrig to be an honorary member of our club, to follow him in his travels. We cannot thank him enough for his service to our club and town. Don replied that that joining our club in 2000 had changed his life. He had never been a member of a service organization before and he was so happy to work with us in a small town where the impact of our service is so significant.
Program
Our speaker today was delayed today and never did make the meeting. The program was to be on shelter boxes that are such a big aid in natural disasters. In the meantime Tim Lee from Rotary International spoke about what he does as a technical advisor to inspect and monitor grants made by Rotary International for natural disasters. He is here meeting the client property owners in Glen Haven. The RI grant was for well and septic repair and 37 homeowners benefited. RI makes 400 grants of over $50,000 annually and very few are in the U.S. Tim is a past District Governor and his club is in Indiana. Next, Chuck Bonza spoke about shelter boxes and his experience with FEMA in Hurricane Sandy in New York where he saw what it is like to lose everything and have no services functioning. Brad added information from the Internet, that the program was started by a Rotary club in Florida and in 2012 the shelter box organization was spun off as a separate 501c3 that partners with Rotary.
Thursday mornings through October 1st we of Noon Rotary are fortunate to serve the community at the Farmers Market in Bond Park. The best part of all is making local residents and visitors feel welcome to the market. Short term parking spots are provided for loading and unloading where we help out.
Bob Brunson leads our effort ably assisted each week by Jim Austin to serve the market from 8;00 am to 1:00 pm. Our table under the blue canopy provides information on Emergency Preparedness, Happenings in Estes Park, and Restaurant suggestions. Generally we are there to help visitors and vendors have a successful and happy experience at the market.
