COME TO THE MEETING ON JUNE 27

NO MEETING ON JULY 4TH

New Fire Chief Rick Lasky

Fire Chief Rick Lasky

Rick Lasky, a 40-plus year veteran of the fire service, began his career here as Fire Chief for the Estes Valley (CO) Fire Protection District on April 1, 2024. At our meeting on 6/27/24 Rick will introduce himself to us.  He followed in his father’s footsteps beginning his career as a firefighter in the suburbs on the southwest side of Chicago and has been a line firefighter, firefighter-paramedic, company grade officer, training officer and command-level officer.

While in Illinois he received the 1996 International Society of Fire Service Instructors “Innovator of the Year” award for his part in developing the “Saving Our Own” program, a program designed to teach firefighters how to save firefighters that have become trapped or lost in a burning building. Throughout his 40-plus years in the fire service he has served as a career and volunteer firefighter. Rick is a long-standing editorial advisory board member for Fire Engineering Magazine, serves on the FDIC International advisory board and as an author has written over 200 technical articles that have been published in national fire-rescue journals. These magazine articles relate to fire department operations, administration, training and safety. He is the author of the best-selling books “Pride and Ownership-A Firefighter’s Love of the Job” and “Five Alarm Leadership: From the Firehouse to the Fireground” published by Fire Engineering Books and is the co-host for the podcast “The Command Post” heard on FireEngineering.com as well as the podcast “Old School.”

Rick has also served as a police officer and was wounded on several occasions, once while defending a victim of family violence and has received numerous fire and police awards and commendations. He was also honored in 2011 as an inductee into the Chicago Softball Hall of Fame. He is a Lewisville Honorary Police Officer and Honorary Battalion Commander in the 18th Battalion of the FDNY. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rick lectures at the local, state, national and international levels and is a sought-after speaker by both the public and private sectors. He is married to his best friend Jami and they have two children Rick and Emily.

Our program on June 27th will be held in person, but a Zoom link will be provided. Click on the link below to be admitted.

Update from President Anne Slack
  • I am so looking forward to this week’s meeting on Thursday to meet our new Fire Chief, Rick Lasky.  I hope you will be there.
  • I want to thank Dave Evans for stepping forward and accepting the editor position with the Spoke.  I  personally think the Spoke is a great source of information for our members.
  • I am hoping to start a tradition where we have members introduce themselves to the club with a 3 to 5 minute presentation.  We have new members in the last few years that don’t know our long time members.  This will allow us to get to know each other better.
  • Do try to participate in working with Sunrise Rotary on our float.
  • A special thanks to Jack Ford, our new President Elect, for the programs he is putting together for us. Be sure to let him know if you have an idea for a speaker.
  • Remember we will not have a meeting on July 4th.  Our next meeting after that will be on July 11th.  Jack will be leading that meeting as my husband and I will be at his family’s annual reunion.
Help with Rotary Float

Stacey Cole Winsor emailed this note:

“We will begin building on WED. 26th at 1070 Lexington Lane  (Winsor’s home)…at 6:30PM…Dan has most tools needed…and in the meantime, we’ll gather up some supplies we need….

One item we need to create is a FAKE FIRE…if anyone has any ideas to do that…let us know by replying to http://jean.rissmiller@gmail.com… maybe a little fan or something underneath to make it GLOW!!

We have been granted permission from McGregor Ranch foreman, Luke and his wife Zoe who is Dawn Shield’s daughter and son in law…for many props…if you have boots, belts, hats, western shirts, bandanas, etc…gather them up for MONDAY July 8th for the parade…we will have places to sit on the float and will need some walkers to PASS OUT (not throw) the candy!!  Hay bales and benches, maybe a rocking chair, and a rocking horse….will be for Sitting!!  I’ll order some candy from Oriental Trading and I have silver buckets for candy passer outers!!!  If you have kiddos or grandkiddos that want to hang out with us cool kids…bring ‘em on down…I’ll pass on more info as to times etc when I receive it!!  YOU ALL ROCK!!!

Stacey”

It would be great if some of the noon Rotary members could participate in the Rooftop parade.  If you want to help build the float this coming week, please feel welcome.

The theme is “The American Cowboy”.  We have an 18 ft. flat bed trailer that Mike McKinney from the Sunrise club has lent us.  The plan is a covered wagon at one end with a campfire at the other end.

We had a lot of fun participating in this event last year.  I really hope some of you will choose to go Wedneday night.

Falcon Ridge Project Completed

Falcon Ridge Gardens

Saturday, June 22, 2024 we had a photo session out at Falcon Ridge for the completed project.  Dave Boon Sunrise Rotary President Jean Rissmiller,  Ren Gobris, President of Estes Valley Community Gardens and many others were there to celebrate the project.  What became clear as we talked to each other is this was more than a project that supplied a garden.  It also supplied physical and mental health to the residents as they got outside and worked with the plants and interacted with their neighbors.
Congratulations to all of us in town for making this a success!
