Globetrotter and traveler Joe Arnold will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, June 11. He will discuss his exploration of and travel through Southeast Asia.
Travel in Laos, Cambodia and Burma has not always been safe or welcome. In the 1960’s, Laos was caught up in the Vietnam war; in the 1970's Cambodia saw the Khmer Rouge genocide; and as recently as 2012, Myanmar (Burma) was under the rule of a repressive military regime.
But times change. Laos now openly welcomes vacationers, the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia see over 2 million visitors a year, and Myanmar is primed to see a surge in tourism as democratic reforms progress. With the door recently opened to travel in Myanmar, Estes Park residents Joe Arnold and Deedee Hampton planned a trip that navigated the middle path between the open-ended vagabond adventures of the backpacker and gap year crowd, and the expense and schedules of a guided group tour.
The program will explore the beautiful former French provincial capital of Luang Prabang in Laos; the ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia; and the magnificent Shwedagon Paya temple in Yangon (Rangoon), the atmospheric wonders of temples in Bagan, and the magical Inle Lake in Myanmar.
Joe Arnold has traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad where he enjoys exploring new cultures, foods and adventures. He is particularly fond of exploring the sacred art found in the temples, pagodas and shrines of Asia. He recently retired from the National Park Service where he was employed as an engineer for 38 years. He is a 34-year resident of Estes Park. He claims to be a "recovering engineer" and now spends his retirement time as an artist and traveler.

Registration is now open for the Rotary Club of Estes Park Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament, set for Saturday, June 27. The $100 fee includes green fees, cart, participation gift and snacks. Players with an annual 7-day membership at the Estes Park Golf Course have a reduced registration fee of $65.
In addition to playing 18 holes of golf, golfers will vie for several prizes, including a putting contest, most accurate drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Separate prizes are offered for men and women in the most accurate drive and longest putt competition. For the second year, the Peoria handicapping system will determine the winning team. This system assigns players’ handicaps based on their performance at pre-determined holes, which are not revealed to the golfers in advance. The system allows teams an equal opportunity to win.
The tournament is open to teams as well as individuals, who will be placed on teams. The fun begins at 11:30 a.m. with a chip and putt contest prior to the 1 p.m. shotgun start at the 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course.
“This year’s tournament will be different from past events because it’s on a Saturday, to make it more convenient for golfers who work. The value of the top prizes has been increased to $100 and the cost to register has been reduced to $100, with an additional reduction for Estes Park Golf Course members,” said Bruce Carmichael, chairman. “Our goal is to raise $12,000 for Rotary Club of Estes Park's Scholarship fund,” he added.
Each member of the winning team will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Estes Park Golf Course Pro Shop, with second and third place teams receiving gift certificates from local merchants. Four winners of Closest to the Pin competition on the Par 3 holes will take home $100 gift certificates to the Pro Shop.
Registration and sponsorship forms at available online at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org or at the Estes Park 18 Hole Golf Course. Golfers may also call Bruce Carmichael at 303-946-6349.

The Ernie Altick Fellowship program was established by the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation in 1987 to recognize Rotarians and other individuals who contribute a minimum of $500 to the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation. This program was established in honor of Ernie Altick: Rotary Club President, Rotary District Governor, YMCA leader and Estes Park civic leader. One of several ways to contribute to the Foundation and obtain "Ernie Altick credit" is through purchase of Estes Park Duck Race Adoption Forms that are marked for the Foundation. In order to encourage as broad a credit as possible, we need the help of Rotary Club members. In the next few meetings, a list of Adoption forms marked for the Foundation in 2015 and 2014 will be available in the back of the meeting room for members to examine, along with the criteria for Ernie Altick credit.
