Come and Hear Dr. Andrew Newberg Discuss Neuroscience and Neurotheology
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D.
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D. is currently the Research Director at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital in Philadelphia. He is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nuclear Medicine. He has actively pursued a number of neuroimaging research projects which have included the study of aging and dementia, epilepsy, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Newberg has been particularly involved in the study of mystical and religious experiences, a field referred to as “neurotheology”. He has published over 300 peer reviewed articles and chapters on brain function, brain imaging, and the study of religious and mystical experiences. He has published 17 books which have been translated into 22 different languages. He was listed as one of the 30 Most Influential Neuroscientists Alive Today by the Online Psychology Degree Guide.
He has presented his work at scientific and religious meetings throughout the world and has appeared on Dr. Oz, StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Good Morning America, Nightline, 20/20, CNN, CBS News, ABC World News Tonight, as well as in the nationally distributed movies: “What the Bleep Do We Know?”; Bill Maher’s “Religulous”; and “Awake: The Life of Yogananda.” His brain scan images have been included in several major museum exhibits including the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. His work has been featured in a number of major media articles including in Newsweek, Time, National Geographic, Discover, New York Times, O Magazine, Los Angeles Times, London Observer, Forbes, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Readers Digest.

Thank you, thank you Rotarians for the wonderful turnout for this year’s Shredathon. Once again our collaboration with the League of Women Voters has yielded just an outstanding event for our Community—Estes Recycle Day.
The traffic pattern has been honed over the last two years and now no one has to spend much time in line waiting for service! While it almost feels like there are few attendees, our counts show a steady number of cars are processed each year in a much faster time.
This year we are adding $3,342 to our scholarship funds while recycling 9,000 lbs of paper material. Win/win in my view. Tara

Great Speakers Lead to New Members
Make sure to read our Spoke speaker profile this week. We have a great speaker, Dr. Andrew Newberg. Among other things, he has done research in the study of aging and dementia. He is also involved in what is called neurotheology, the study of how prayer and meditation can affect your brain! He has written and published 13 books. It sounds like a fascinating talk on Thursday.
This is a wonderful opportunity to bring guests to visit our club. Tell your neighbors, tell your friends, tell your fellow pickleball players, tell folks you may know at church or in yoga class! It would be great to have a packed house! Who knows, the guest you bring may become our next member!
John Denver Tribute Concert

The John Denver Tribute Concert website has gone “live”. The concert will be held on Saturday, August 22nd, 2026 at the Ruesch Auditorium at the YMCA of the Rockies. Tickets can now be purchased at the Visitor’s Center and MacDonald’s Book Shop.

There will be many opportunities to serve, but the first will be for all of the membership to become a sponsor. Sponsors will receive assigned seating with 4 tickets at the $500 or higher level, 2 tickets at the $250 level and 2 general admission tickets at the $100 level. Please give this important fundraising event your consideration and watch for an email with the accompanying material to be emailed to you soon.
Update from Tara: We want to thank those who have already become sponsors for the concert and encourage those that have not to do so😊. Also, I will be passing around a list of locations for a poster, and will want people to sign up for a (one) location to place a poster. For example, Chuck took one to put up at the Presbyterian Church, Carl took one to put up near his office, etc. Annie took one for Ace Hardware. Pick a place you frequent, and put a poster there.

Carl Robicheaux updated us on John Denver Concert August 22 for scholarships.There are railings now installed on the auditorium steps!He bought some solar lights to line the outside walk.
We are at 60% sold and at 80% of last years ticket revenue which are good results.
Lee Lasson again asks for help for the IT crew to facilitate our meetings.There are three of them now and it takes two at every meeting.Join to learn about technology and help produce our meetings.
Annie Slack will be collecting items for Crutches for Africa by our Shred truck this Saturday at the town Recycle Day.
Tara Moenning said Recycle Day volunteers received email orientation that shows where to park & recycling fees .They are accepting bikes this year.
Big Duck Ben Van der Werf announced his first Duck Race meeting next Thursday after this one.It will be a short organizing agenda.
Jim Austin announced he is moving to Loveland and that Gregg Jurgens will be taking on Shelter Box fundraising.
Jim is donating $50 for the rest of the year for his monthly $10 shelter box solicitation.Today he auctioned off his framed 1997 Duck Race poster with old tickets on the back and It went for $70.
President Guy asked us toconsider Lee’s request for IT help and said that we also need people to learn the web site on Club Runner.
