This week's speaker: Adam Perry
Efficiency Works - Save Energy, Money, the Environment

Adam Perry, Platte River Power Authority Senior Customer Services Specialist, will speak at the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, September 3. He will describe how homeowners and businesses can obtain technical assistance, rebates, and incentives for improving energy efficiency and for saving money through the Efficiency Works™ program.

Efficiency Works was created in 2014 as a partnership between Platte River Power Authority and the utilities of its four owner municipalities, including the Town of Estes Park. Efficiency Works unites all of the five utilities' efficiency offerings under one program.

Platte River Power Authority is a not-for-profit wholesale electricity generation and transmission provider that delivers safe, reliable, environmentally-responsible, and competitively-priced energy and services to its owner municipalities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Loveland for delivery to their utility customers.

Adam Perry started his energy efficiency career in Oregon in 2001. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management, an Associate of Science Degree in Energy Management, and an Energy Efficiency Management Certification offered by American Public Power Association.

For the past 14 years Perry has managed, implemented and designed utility energy efficiency programs, and currently manages the Efficiency Works program for Platte River Power Authority located in Fort Collins.

Happy Money
  • Guy Van der Werf visited with a former exchange student while he was in Europe recently. Sorry, the Scribe did not catch the name of the student.
  • Ward Nelson is happy  for Gene Oja.
  • Phyllis Robinson is happy for 38 years visiting in Estes Park. They learned about the cabin they stayed in during their first year during a Rotary Silent Auction. Kyle Robinson will have a birthday tomorrow.
Program
President Scott introduced Speaker Ken Small, Governor of Rotary District 5440. Ken gave updates for the state of Rotary Clubs, Rotary International, and District 5440.
  • Ken congratulated our club for efforts that serve the community with the Annual Duck Race, and the Scholarship program. We need to emphasize these efforts, and be seen as a major contributor to the community.
  • Membership in North America is flat. Clubs are losing as many members ar they are gaining. Failure to retain members is the problem. New memberships in India and China are growing rapidly.
  • The Theme for this year chosen by Rotary President R. I. Ravindran is “Be a Gift to the World."  Every person has gifts and skills to pass on to others.
  • The 2015 RI Convention will be held in Seoul, Korea in June.
  • There have been no new cases of Polio in Nigeria in over a year. Africa will soon be declared free of Polio. That leaves Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • The 2015 District Conference will be held in Jackson Hole on May 19-21
President Scott Thompson dismissed the group with the 4-Way Test.

Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship

The Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship
Memorandum of Understanding
WHEREAS, the family and friends of Ron Kuhns wish to establish a scholarship to be administered by The Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation (hereafter referred to as the Foundation) in the sum of $1,000; and
WHEREAS, such funds have been received by the Foundation; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation have gratefully received such funds to be utilized for the purposes intended; and
WHEREAS the Trustees of the Foundation desire that this be a permanent endowment to the greatest extent possible;
NOW THEREFORE, the Trustees do establish the Ron Kuhns Memorial Scholarship Fund, to be administered as follows:
  1. Funds were received in the amount of $30,000 as of the date of this agreement (the “corpus”).
  2. For years following 2015, two calculations will be made by the Foundation:
a. The interest generated by the corpus over the period ending December  31th of each year will be calculated based on the average return  of the entire Foundation endowment fund.  This will be the base amount available for the scholarship award.
b. The amount of the scholarship of $1,000 for the student selected in May of each year.
  1. Should there not be a student identified the income (return) generated shall be added to the corpus.
  2. It will be assumed that the Kuhns funds will be incorporated into the other assets invested in the endowment portion of the Foundation.  The amount in the Kuhns corpus will, however, be separately identified in the Foundation reporting and for the purposes of calculating the return.
  3. The scholarship so awarded shall be a one year scholarship to a student who:
a. does not qualify academically for another scholarship being awarded that year;
b. is identified by the Scholarship Committee as possessing a passion for a unique field of study that, nevertheless, meets the general criteria for a Rotary Scholarship:
c. is pursing full-time studies at an accredited college, university, or technical/trade school;
d. is a citizen of the United States or permanent resident in the process of applying for citizenship;
e. is a resident of Estes Park for the last 2 or more years;
f. applies for the scholarship through the Estes Park High School Scholarship Application process.
  1. The scholarship may be awarded at the Awards Night ceremony.
  2. In the event the amount in the Kuhns fund becomes insufficient to provide for the intended purpose, the Trustees may combine the then balance with other Foundation funds and administer them pursuant to the general purposes of the Foundation
Adopted at a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Estes Park Foundation this ________ day of ________________, 2015.

Rotary Quote of the Week

"Each Rotarian has a different motivation which can range from altruism to egocentric reasons. What is important is that every Rotarian find value in what they are doing through Rotary. Rotary International is a magnificent shell for action, but the action has to be taken by motivated persons. Whatever motivates a Rotarian to participate and take action should be recognized and fostered."

          - Ken Small, 2015-16 District 5440 Governor
