Update from President Bill Solms

Thank you YMCA of the Rockies for a great program this past Thursday!  I apologize that I had to squeeze in our Club's important membership considerations resulting in shortening a great program.  I am glad we were able to give Milt Garrett his well-deserved recognition as his home Club. Also, due to Carl's direction, all will know the trivia question coming up this next week during our Club Assembly meeting. On top of that, Scott scored some laughs, and thank you all for your generous support of our Happy Dollars fund. Again, a big thanks for the International Committee's proactive move to get our $1,000.00 Club donation to Polio Plus; we will stay the course until Wild Polio Virus is extinct!

Please join me on the 22d at 5 pm on Zoom to kick off plans for the 2121 Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival to be held May 1, 2121.  I am open to new ideas, broad community participation, and making this a fun activity for all of us, both in the planning and execution of all the different moving parts. It will be important to make up for this year's lost community activity and for the additional anxiety and suffering caused by Covid-19, the fires, and divisive events nationwide.

October 15, 2020 Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Solms at 12:00. Bill opened the mic to those who wanted to comment on the fire.

President's Announcements
  • Duck Race Committee will meet October 22 at 5:00 on Zoom to plan 2021.
  • October 24 is World Polio Day.
  • Bill wished Happy birthday to Carl Robicheaux and happy anniversary to the Lassons.
Karen McClure gave the invocation. Bill led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no guests. Scott brought us the song online- one verse of “I’m Proud to Be An American” by Lee Greenwood, followed by The Joke of the week. Bill’s “Rotarian” magazine trivia question generated $1 from Karen Thompson although she did get one of the three answers required.

Happy Money
  • Tom Gardner gave $28 for their excellent 28-day camping trip in Colorado and Utah.
  • Annie Slack said the zoom District Conference was excellent. It was held for 3 hours and our International President gave an impressive speech. He emphasized the need to recruit younger members as Rotary average age worldwide is 75!
  • Carl Robicheaux thanked everyone for supporting his gumbo sales at the Chamber of Commerce fundraiser. He thanked Scott Thompson for his two days of work with him and Karen for helping. He also offered happy money for our fire fighters.
  • Karen Thompson is happy to have been involved in the gumbo event.
  • Bill Solms was happy with his two pints of gumbo.
Induction
Milt Garrett was inducted into our club as his home club. He has worked worldwide consulting businesses for Rotary and has been a part of many Rotary Clubs-including ours. Milt gave $5 happy money and a check for Paul Harris!

More Happy Money
Tom Maher gave happy money for anyone attending a Rotary meeting in Russia besides Milt and himself.  No rivals on this.

Program
Rick Taylor introduced our speakers today from the YMCA of the Rockies: Susan Taylor, Program Director; Karen Lloyd D’Onofrio, Historian and Museum Archives; Katie Kosmerl, Philanthropy Director.  It was an excellent detailed presentation on the history of the Y worldwide and all the activities and programs at our Y.

Member Spotlight - Karen McClure

Each week our Spoke is profiling a member of our Club in order to get to know them better and stay connected through these socially distant times.

Karen McClure
I was born in Philadelphia (Mom a Dad had grown up in Swarthmore) and grew up on the Gulf Coast (Houston, Beaumont, New Orleans) until I went to college...Smith College. Got married during graduation and travelled to Omaha, NB. Spent all super holidays at the missile site; everyone else had small children at home. When we finally parted company with the Air Force we had a son and were expecting a 👧 girl. Stayed in Omaha until 1976 and then went to New Orleans (banking).

All my friends from high school had married each other. I got divorced. I went into residential real estate where I stayed for twenty years...in Denver! All that moving around on the Gulf Coast prepared me! John was in College at Tulane; Kristin was starting CSU.

My volunteer world was centered on starting education programs in zoos and nature centers: Fontenelle Forest, Henry Doorly Zoo, Louisiana Nature Center. They are still operating! I joined the Junior League and, of course, the Smith College Alumnae Club. Taught at all the education programs and recruited volunteers for all. Served as president of virtually every organization of which I was a member.

Joined Rotary because my grandfather Lewis was a Rotarian. Earned a Master’s degree in Education from LSU in New Orleans. Now married to long-time friend, David Sidley Evans. Turned 80 last birthday. Onward!
Submit your photo for 2021 Friendship Card

It's time to enter your best work in the photo contest for the 2021 Friendship Card. There is no charge to enter, and the winner will receive photo credit on the card and two 2021 Friendship Cards. The deadline for photos is October 26, 2020.

The Friendship Card, which provides discounts at local businesses, debuted in 2019, replacing the long-time Rocky Card. The Rotary Club of Estes Park re-established the card as a fundraiser for club projects and community grants. A recent $500 grant to the Community Corner Café will help fund its operations.

“In its first year, almost 700 cards were sold, and we anticipate that number will increase as people become aware of the value the card brings to local shoppers,” said Karen Thompson, fund development director. “In 2020, 71 local businesses participated by providing some type of discount to cardholders. Rotary is very thankful for all the participating businesses, especially the Estes Park News for their continuous advertising throughout the summer.”

To enter the photo contest, email a favorite Estes Valley/RMNP photo in high resolution, jpg format to epfriendshipcard@gmail.com. A panel of judges will select the winning photo. Cropping and slight color correction are allowed for photos, but photos with anything added or taken away through a photo editing program will be rejected. All decisions of the judges are final. The winner will be notified by email. The winning photo may also be used in other marketing materials for the Friendship Card. Owner of the photo will receive no compensation other than photo credit and two 2021 Friendship Cards.

The 2020 Friendship Card costs $10, is valid until December 31, 2020, and is available for sale at Nicky’s Restaurant, Rocky Mountain Gateway, The Village Store at National Park Village, Safeway Guest Services, MacDonald Book Store, and Quality Inn.

Proceeds from the Friendship Card fund Rotary club projects and grants, including a $500 award to the Community Corner Café. Bruce Brackman, Community Corner Café representative, recently accepted the grant from Karen Thompson, just in time for the 2020-21 season of free meals for all every Friday beginning October 2. Meals will be provided on a take-out only basis at the Shepherd of the Mountains Church.
E. P. Rotary Club marks progress toward a polio-free world
Urges Rotarians, residents to help end the paralyzing disease

Rotary Club members in Estes Park are taking action to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that still cripples children in parts of the world today. World Polio Day is Saturday, Oct. 24.

The club has donated $1,000 to the Rotary International Polio Fund, and club members are encouraged to make online and mail-in donations. To add a donation to this worldwide effort, go online to https://www.endpolio.org/ and select the Polio Fund, or send a check made out to The Rotary Foundation with Polio Fund in the memo line, to The Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Dr., Chicago, IL 60693. To download a form to send with your check, click on this link: https://clubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000005241/en-ca/files/homepage/donationformpolioeradication/123_contribution_form_en_20201009005509.pdf

When Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, polio paralyzed 1,000 children every day. Great progress has been made against the disease since then, with the number of cases reduced by 99.9 percent. Polio is currently present in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. The initiative has vaccinated 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.

A highly infectious disease, polio causes paralysis and is sometimes fatal. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. For as little as 60 cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against polio for life. After an international investment of more than $9 billion, and the successful engagement of over 200 countries and 20 million volunteers, polio could be the first human disease of the 21st century to be eradicated.

“And we remain committed to the end,” said Ron Gordon, International Service Director for the Rotary Club of Estes Park. “We encourage everyone to make a donation to bring about the end of this disease in our lifetime.”

With polio nearly eradicated, Rotary and its partners must sustain this progress and continue to reach every child with the polio vaccine. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. Rotary has committed to raising $50 million each year to support global polio eradication efforts. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to match that 2-to-1, for a total of $150 million each year.

Rotary has contributed nearly $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to ending polio since 1985.

“The last few vestiges of this deadly virus remain In Afghanistan and Pakistan,” said Bill Solms, Rotary Club of Estes Park President. “This year Africa was finally declared wild polio virus free after three years of no cases!  We cannot relax our guard until the same occurs in these last two countries; until then testing, education, and vaccinations must receive our full support."

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who unite and take action to create lasting change in communities around the globe. For more than 110 years, Rotary’s people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to improve lives through service. From promoting literacy and peace to providing clean water and improving health care, Rotary members are always working to better the world.
