Learn about the new K9 Program for EPPD

Officer Mikel Otazua and Captain Eric Rose, of the Estes Park Police Department, will be speaking to the Rotary Club of Estes Park on Thursday, August 1, at the regular noon meeting. They would like to introduce us to the new Police Department K9 Program. Please note the Rotary Club of Estes Park’s new meeting location at Nicky’s Restaurant.

Captain Eric Rose                        Officer Mikel Otazua

Mikel Otazua, a member of the Estes Park Police Department for three years, has had a life-long career goal of becoming a K9 Handler in a small town. Born in Venezuela, he moved to Texas at the age of six where his passion for dogs began. While growing up, he was actively involved in fostering, adopting and rescuing dogs, before finding their forever homes. He received his education from Miami-Dade Community College, Florida International University to study criminal justice, and University of Colorado Denver. He completed the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy, prior to being hired by the Estes Park Police Department.

Eric Rose, Captain for Police Operations, is responsible for customer service, training, recruiting, equipment, budgeting, emergency manager, and more.

July 25 Meeting Highlights

President-elect Bill Solms called the meeting to order at noon. He announced that he is presiding in President Doug's absence, as Doug in in Dallas for job training. Dave Evans invited volunteers to sign up for one of two shifts for upcoming Farmers Markets and stressed that help is needed and training will be provided. Ann Slack gave a thoughtful invocation on showing kindness in the presence of negativity and hatred. Dave Evans led us in an a cappella rendition of "God Bless America" followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Jennifer Comstock helped us welcome our guests: Frank Haines, Sojourner from Oklahoma, who brought his wife Tish and daughter Ann as his guests; and Jim Whiteneck, a visiting Rotarian, who has relocated from Ft. Smith Arkansas and will be applying for membership in our club. Ann Slack, who claimed she could not compete with the absent Scott Thompson's talent as a jokester, ably entertained us with a chicken/frog/librarian joke.

Farmers Market: show your Rotary spirit

Our Community Service has begun at the Farmers Market every Thursday morning in Bond Park, and you are invited to be a part of it.

Jim Austin has been the 'face of Rotary' to Vicki and the vendors at the market. When Jim leaves in mid July, we will need a "point person" each week to coordinate us with Vicki each Thursday. Can you help do that?

Furthermore we need a couple of volunteers each Thursday. Yes, the market is open through 1 p.m. so you will get meeting credit if you work at the market during the Rotary meeting. This effort keeps Rotary in front of people we know in Estes - and the visitors.

If you are interested in volunteering you can think of it in one long shift or two shifts from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm on Thursdays. While helping with parking or loading where we can; the best part is ambassadorial by smiling and making the vendors and attendees to the market feel welcome in the Estes Park way.

Let me know if any dates appeal to you between now and through the last Thursday in September. Thanks for considering a pleasurable opportunity for Community Service by our Club members. Let me know which Thursdays appeal to you. Neighbors, visitors and grandkids are always welcome to work along with you.

Volunteer Coordinator for Community Service
