D.G. Redder to visit Estes Park Rotary Club

Barbara Redder, Governor of Rotary District 5440, will speak at the regular meeting of the Estes Park Rotary Club at noon on Thursday, Aug. 18,  at the National Park Theater, in the lower level of the Other Side Restaurant in Estes Park. Her district includes 54 Rotary clubs in Wyoming, Northwern Colorado, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska.

The International Rotary theme for the year is Rotary Serving Humanity!  DG Barb is expected to focus on growing Rotary’s contributions to humanity. The theme is meant to put focus on all the projects that the Rotary Club of Estes Park accomplishes, both locally and internationally. Opportunities are plentiful for potential members, young and old, to help Rotary achieve its mission of “peace and understanding throughout the world,” and by bringing their passion to provide service.

“We’re anxious to share some of our projects with the District Governor Barbara Redder, said Thor Homme, Rotary Club of Estes Park president.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park's events include “It’s Showtime!” and the annual Golf Tournament, which raise funds for scholarships awarded each spring to graduating seniors. The largest effort of the club is the annual Duck Race, which generated over $117,000 for 64 area charities in 2016. The club also awards community grants annually to area non-profits.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service and help to build goodwill and peace in the world.  There are 1.2 million Rotary members in 34,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.  Rotary clubs have been serving communities worldwide for more than a century.  Rotary clubs around the world, initiate projects that address critical issues such as conflict resolution, hunger, poverty, disease and illiteracy.

The Rotary Club of Estes Park welcomes new members. For more information, visit rotaryclubofestespark.org, or come to a meeting.

Announcements
  • Thor announced that September 1 will be the final meeting to be held in the current location.
  • Tara Moenning reported that Gregg Jurgens is getting ready to send the proceeds from the golf tournament.
  • Tara also updated the club on thank you letters the scholarship committee has received from two recipients:
    • Emily Harris, a 2015 recipient, reports that she has decided to major in forensic chemistry with a minor in criminal science. She maintained a high grade point in her first year at the University of Northern Colorado, and has received a scholarship from the chemistry department.
    • Brad Harris’ parents also wrote to thank Rotary for his scholarship that was awarded in 2016. He will be majoring in golf. His family reports that they are very grateful for the assistance in sending him to college.
  • PALISADE PEACH SALE - Karen Thompson reported that peach sales continue to increase. We are still under 50 boxes, and the vendor is able to supply us with up to 80 boxes. Orders may be placed through next Wednesday, August 17. A special thank you to Laurie Gaglio for taking orders for nine boxes from the morning club. Drive-through delivery is available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on August 18 in the Rotary tent site area at the Farmer’s Market.
  • Thor announced that District Governor Barbara Redder and Ron Randall, Assistant District Governor, will visit our club next week. The board will meet with them at 10:30 a.m. before the regular meeting.
  • Thor reported that yearly membership numbers are still not complete -- 12 people still are not accounted for. The budget is based on expected income, and until membership numbers are clear Longley Parker cannot project income and expenses
  • Thor revealed the conclusions of the committee that has been studying possible venues for our weekly Rotary meetings. They have worked hard to find a location large enough to accommodate us throughout the year while providing lunches and ample parking. He thanked Karol Rinehart for leading the endeavor with real dedication and effort. The best choice for the club at this time is the Rodeway Inn. It will cost approximately $4700 a year for the room, but we only need to guarantee 25 lunches per week. There are elevators to reach the meeting room. Full details will be announced before September 8, our first meeting in the new venue.
Program
Kerrie Hill introduced Chris Tholen of the Colorado Hospital Association, who presented information on the future growth of rural hospitals in Colorado and explained the proposed ballot issue, Amendment 69, which would transform health care coverage in Colorado to a state-run system.

Rotary Quote of the Week

We are 99.9 percent of the way toward ending polio. As of early June, there were only 16 cases of wild poliovirus in the world, and many think this could be the year we see the last naturally occurring case of polio.
