This week's program: Club Community Grants

This week's program will recognize the recipients of our Club Community Grants. Club members will learn how the funding will be used by each group. Dave Evans will present the program. Please plan to attend so that you can see how your Foundation support is making a difference for local organizations.

March 22, 2018 meeting highlights

President Kathy Groesbeck called the meeting to order. Scott Thompson provided the invocation, Kathy led the Pledge and Longley had no guests to introduce.

Announcements
  • Tara Moenning reminded club members that 30 scholarship applications are available at the library until March 30 for review and input.
  • Tara said the Shred-a-Thon in scheduled for Saturday, April 21. She then described all the wonderful things we can rid ourselves of without damaging the environment.
  • Wayne Andersen, Duck Wrangler, needs help on Thursdays,  March 29 at the storage locker, April 5 and 12 at his home, to make sure that no duck goes uncounted.
  • Thor Homme, Foundation President, encouraged club members to circle the Estes Park Rotary Foundation when they adopt their ducks. This is how we raise money for Community Grants. That fund is in dire need of replenishment, so adopt those ducks and select your Foundation!
  • Lee Lasson announced that 271 online adoptions have already occurred. The race is on, he said! Seven people have placed online adoption orders for the 10-duck pack, a new feature. He also needs Rotarians with trucks to help move Duck Central to its new location on Friday, March 23.
  • Kathy reminded us that Duck Central opens officially to the public next Friday, March 30, but a Duck Race Committee meeting/pizza dinner/reading of the town's proclamation will occur at 5 p.m. next Thursday, March 29, giving everyone a preview of the new location at The Ridgeline Hotel.
  • Kathy unveiled a beer naming contest by directing members to review the names submitted for consideration. She encouraged everyone to select their favorite name, which will be featured on a beer tap and barrel at the Duck Race Beer Tent on May 5.
  • Scott, the Duck Race Volunteer Coordinator, said that ALL 68 active members need to ACTIVELY volunteer to help the 2018 Duck Race and round up some friends to help, too. There are easy jobs for those who prefer to sit and more challenging slots for those who love to wear waders in the Fall River.
  • Bill Solms recounted meeting a widow of a Rotarian who was active in the Duck Race. Charlotte Lloyd donated a Duck Race Security hat. Scott Thompson suggested it should be given to the museum for the Duck Race historical collection.
Program
Kathy invited all members to select a committee group, join the chairperson, and get to Rotary work, which we did.

Help the 2018 Estes Park Duck Race Festival

Everyone knows the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival is the place to be on the first Saturday in May. But, did you know that you do not have to be a Rotarian to help? That's right, Rotarians! You can invite your friends to help.

Make a splash! Be a Duck Race Festival volunteer this year! Invite your friends and family.

“We welcome volunteers who can give a few hours on Friday, May 4 and/or Saturday, May 5. No special skills are required except a positive attitude,” said Scott Thompson, Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival volunteer coordinator.

Thompson is looking for volunteers to help with:
  • Setting up and taking down equipment at the start and finish lines
  • Selling duck-themed race memorabilia at Bond Park and Riverside Plaza
  • Supporting operations in Bond Park for charities and organizations
  • Helping to display sponsor ducks
  • Ensuring safety along the riverbanks
  • Keeping the ducks from getting snagged in the river.
“Our 70-member club cannot put on this event without a host of volunteers. It’s a great way to help a great cause, to make new friends, and be part of one of the largest events in Estes Park,” Thompson added.

To sign up as a volunteer, contact Thompson at scott@estesparkrealestate.com or call him at 970-590-9941.
Albanian food, service project
to be featured at meeting

On Friday, April 20, Nehemiah Gateway is having a get-together with the Estes Park High School Honor Society so the students can hear about the Amaro Tan Summer Camp project in Albania. Rotarians are invited, as we are partners in the Amaro Tan grant.

"We’re bringing in the speakers for the event, and the high school cooking club is preparing traditional Albanian foods for the attendees to try," said club member Doug Mann, who is also the Nehemiah Gateway USA President.

"We’re going to highlight our Roma summer camp program that our Rotary club is sponsoring, and try as well to raise a bit of extra funding," he said.

More details will follow.
Rotary Quote of the Week

"This month marks 50 years since the first Rotaract club was chartered, in 1968 ... For half a century, Rotaract has given young people a way to find the same connections with their communities, and the same value in service, that Rotarians find in Rotary. Rotaractors are connecting us to the Rotary of our future, while helping us build the Rotary of today."
