Topic: A Level 3 Sex Offender in the Neighborhood
Dr Larry Corbett will speak at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Estes Park at noon on Thursday, March 12. He will discuss a very sensitive church issue.
You’re sitting in church with your wife and beautiful 15‐year‐old daughter when you realize a man in the choir has been staring at your daughter for most of the service. After church a friend tells you that the new choir member is a “Level 3 sex offender” recently released from prison after 37 years for kidnapping, raping, and holding at knifepoint for three days a 16‐year‐old girl. What do you do?
Assuming the former prisoner has the right to worship in a church, what are the potential issues for him, the church members, staff, ruling board, and youngsters of the church? What would you do if you were the chairperson of the board and father of a teenage girl?
Schools, churches, and non‐profit organizations face many “boundary” issues of appropriate behavior by staff, board members, and volunteers who have any interaction with children and youth. Dr. Corbett has a story to tell that includes many surprises and unexpected turns in the life of a local congregation. In consulting with Church Mutual Insurance, which serves churches of many denominations, he heard a surprising report. In a year’s time this nationwide insurance company had over 300 lawsuits related to inappropriate sexual behavior by church staff, church school teachers, and volunteers. Trying to live by the Golden Rule, what are the options for managing this delicate situation?
Dr. Corbett is the Interim Minister of the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. At retirement, he was invited to be the Senior Minister of Central Union Church, Honolulu, the second largest multi-racial and multi-cultural church after Riverside, New York, in the UCC. Prior to moving to Honolulu he was the organizing pastor of Pinnacle Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale, AZ October, 1989 which grew to over 1300 members under his leadership. While in Scottsdale, he was President of the Board of Directors of Westminster Village, a CCRC with 325 residents. Under his leadership, Westminster undertook a $15 million dollar restoration/addition of new facilities. He was also the Charter President of the Pinnacle Peak Rotary Club. The Academy of Parish Clergy honored him in 2011 as Parish Pastor of the Year. A graduate of Muskingum College, New Concord, OH, and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, PA, he has a Doctor of Ministry Degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL. During his career he has served six churches from Pittsburgh to Cleveland, to St. Petersburg, FL and Phoenix, AZ. He is the co-author with Jerre Stead of the book, “Leadership Unbound: A Primer for Leaders and Entrepreneurs.” Dr. Corbett is married to Meredyth. They have one adult child and five grandchildren.
