September 8, 2022 Meeting Notes President Dennis Gellhaus called the meeting to order. Gregg Jurgens gave the Invocation Dennis led the Pledge of Allegiance. Madison Casey led song “Loch Lomond” for the Scottish Festival. Guests of Rotarians: - Sue Yowell of Sunrise Rotary is Co-Chair of our District Conference to be held at Ridgeline Hotel in Estes June 8-10 2023.
- Beth Weisberg, Chair of our Community Services Committee, has been involved.
- Sue needs help to staff the event as follows:
- Sergeant at Arms
- Transport to service projects and activities
- Assemble goody bags for the guests
- Teresa Mueller of Sunrise is chairing Hospitality and needs folks to host socials in their homes.
- Cindy Taylor and Nicky Gasman chair Activities
- They can use ideas on entertaining attendees.
Sue Yowell & President Dennis Gellhaus - Ron Gordon introduced Suzy Blackhurst, past president of our club, who is visiting from Sunrise.
- Suzy said Sunrise is hosting a potluck social to say goodbye to Ray and Cindy Leaycraft, who was president of our club and then active in Sunrise.
- They are moving to be close to family in Denver.
- It will be held at The Barrel next Wednesday Sept 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm.
- Tom Maher introduced Ruby Bode who is visiting us for the third time.
Announcements: - Mark Lee repeated he needs volunteers to set up and take down our sound system at meetings.
- Only takes 5 minutes to do.
- Dennis gave Ron Gordon a $500 check to sponsor Golf Tournament.
- It is a week away – Friday Sept 16.
- Karen Thompson said we still need some folks to work Elk Fest serving beer October 1-2.
- Foundation board meets Thursday Sept 15 at 1:30 PM
- Pumpkin distribution at the elementary school is October 20.
- Dennis announced anniversaries.
Scott Thompson told his joke. Happy Money: - Jim Whiteneck was happy that Milt Garrett is here today.
- Milt Garret was happy to be here.
- Ron Gordon was happy Milt is here.
- Scott Thompson is happy for all Ray Leaycraft did for our club
- Tara Moenning was happy that our Cowboy Brad John Denver Tribute Concert did so well.
- We expect to clear about $7,000 for our club charitable activities.
- Madison was happy that the John Denver Tribute Concert set a record for revenue, beating the 2016 peak.
- Tom Maher was happy.
- Ron Gordon was happy that Suzy Blackhurst is here today.
Moment for Rotary: - Tara Moenning presented her Rotary Moment short biography.
- President Gladys Van Drie invited Tara & Phil to a club meeting with a program of interest to them.
- Then Gladys invited them to join.
- Moennings were then asked to join a scholarships committee and have been involved in that since.
Tara Moenning Shelter Boxes: - Jim Austin gave his monthly presentation on Shelter Boxes.
- He is asking our members to donate $10 or more to get 1,000 to sponsor one box and are well on our way.
Jim Austin New Opportunity to help Ukrainians: Chuck Bonza presented a new opportunity that came up this week to help arriving Ukrainians. He and Jim Whiteneck received a call from Nataliya Pleshkova about mother and son age 17 who arrived. It takes 3 months for them to receive work permits and they need help in that interim to get started. Jim had the idea to partner with Crossroads and they agreed that they have the capability to provide all services and to administer a Ukrainian Arrivals Fund. We need $3,000 to fund it and then it will be sustained by Crossroads and the community. Chuck has applied to our Community Service Committee. Phil Moenning commented today that individual donations from our members would be tax deductible if channeled through our foundation. Chuck Bonza Peace Corps Revisited: Karen Thompson showed us a short video story of the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961 and her daughter served in Ecuador. The Corps now accepts all ages. There is a Rotary Club in Denver that consists of Peace Corps alumni. Program: - Karen introduced David Monroe.
- He is Executive Director of Arc of Larimer County
- He told us how Arc advocates for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- 23 Arc Stores in the state help fund them.
