SAVA strives to reduce sexual violence
Our program this week will be presented by Dorothy Farrel, executive director of the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Center, which serves Northern Colorado. She will discuss myths and statistics surrounding sexual assault, as well as laws and reporting requirements. Farrel will share a survivor's story, share SAVA's resources, and some strategies on what we can do to change the culture of sexual assault in our community.
Dorothy Farrel
Dorothy Farrel grew up in Estes Park, where her parents still live. She then moved to Arizona after receiving her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work from Colorado State University. While in Arizona, she worked in the nonprofit sector for 17 years, including a role of Executive Director for a nonprofit that served high risk youth and young adults. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in AZ and CO. In 2010, she achieved a personal goal of obtaining her Doctoral degree in Organizational Leadership. She then moved back home to Northern Colorado and taught at CSU and online universities. Last spring she joined the SAVA team as Executive Director, where she shares her mission of reducing sexual violence within the community.

June 6 meeting highlights
President Dave Evans welcomed everyone to today’s meeting on this 75thanniversary of D-Day. He announced that Thor and Darlene Homme are moving to Texas, but will be keeping their home in Estes Park so they can visit. Claudine Perrault’s invocation featured “How to Plant your Garden” with love and service. Pete Sumey led us in singing “For Thor’s a Very Good Fellow”, accompanied by Madison Casey. Harriette Woodard introduced visiting Rotarians: Becky Parker from Downtown Ormond Beach FL Rotary and Bill Kehl from Greeley Centennial Rotary.
Announcements
President Dave expressed our appreciation to Thor for all the good work he has done while a member of our club. He presented two gifts to Thor – the Sergeant at Arms gift for this year and a six-pack of Amber Ale.
Thor then gave a short story about his involvement in Rotary, starting with his involvement in the river for the duck race. He stepped up to take positions that he did not feel capable of, and succeeded in fulfilling what he took on. While often feeling out of his element, he recognizes he is a much better man for having served others through Rotary.
President Dave reported on a new grant our club is involved with. He gave a big thank you to Bill Kehl of Centennial Rotary in Greeley who made it happen in a short time. All three Estes Park Rotary clubs will be participating in grants for a crucial kitchen remodel for La Puente Shelter and Kitchen in Alamosa, CO. This vital community shelter would no longer be able to provide needed meals without this kitchen upgrade.
Tara Moenning read a note from one of our scholarship beneficiaries, Sophie Greenway, who could not attend the meeting earlier this month. She is very grateful to have received this award, which will ease the cost of college.
Tara also announced that there will be recycling this Saturday, along with the town. Volunteers are in place.
Bill Solms welcomed new member Jennifer Comstock whose husband Matt is also a member. Jennifer is happy to be a Rotary member, and brings expertise in many fields to the club and to her job at Key Bank in Estes Park.
The meeting on June 13 will be held at the Ridgeline Hotel.
Dale Bonza reminded members that this is the first week of Farmer’s Market.
Rita DuChateau advised that invoices for membership dues will be going out tomorrow.
Happy Money
Kathy Groesbeck is happy for the freedom won for us on D-Day 75 years ago. In October, she and her husband will be touring Normandy, France, on a dream trip with the World War II Museum.
Tom Maher is happy to be here from Arizona, but sad to be losing Thor and that Roger Thorp is no longer with us.
Bill Solms is also missing our architect friend, but is happy to hear Thor will return from time to time.
Program
Rick Taylor introduced Tom Carosello and Dawn Wilson from the Estes Valley Parks and Recreation District. They gave us an in-depth update to the progress the district is making in growing their programs, maintaining and improving their facilities throughout the valley, and the addition of a foundation to help provide scholarships and garner grants to make sure funding continues to be in place for the future.
The meeting was adjourned with the 4-Way Test.

Sign up to sponsor the golf tournament
As rising river levels, darting hummingbirds and greening golf courses signal spring’s arrival in Estes Park, it’s time to mark your calendar for the Rotary Golf Tournament for Scholarships, set for Saturday, June 29. The 23rd annual event will raise funds for our Foundation Scholarship Fund. Annually, our club raises $24,000 for three, four-year academic scholarships for graduating Estes Park high school students. We recently awarded a total of $34,630 in academic and memorial scholarships to 11 members of the class of 2019.
The tournament will be held at the 18-hole Estes Park Golf Course, where the majestic mountain views are often known to distract golfers. The fun begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
“We have set our sights on raising more in sponsorships than we did last year, and our committee members are making those contacts now,” Chairman Peter Sinnott said. “All sponsor donations are tax deductible and go toward local scholarships.”
Many sponsors have been recruited, but more are needed, Sinnott said. Levels include:
Named Scholarship Sponsor ($2,500 and above),
Diamond Sponsor ($2,000),
Gold Sponsor ($1,000),
Beverage Cart Sponsor ($750)
Silver Sponsor ($500),
Bronze Sponsor ($250),
Tee/Green Sponsor ($110), and
Junior Golfer Sponsor ($75).
Names of sponsors pledging $110 or more are displayed at the tournament and included in publicity prior to the event. In addition, sponsors who commit to $250 or more receive between one and eight complimentary player registrations, according to sponsorship level.
For information on how to sign on as a sponsor, please call Jay Harroff (970-227-3856) or Ron Gordon (970-586-0370) or download forms from our club website.

Rotary Quote of the Week
"As I look back on all the things I have seen and the people I have met since becoming president of Rotary International last July, I am certain of this: Rotary's capacity to transform lives for the better is unparalleled. Our impact is far beyond anything I could have imagined when I first became a Rotarian. "
-Barry Rassin, 2018-19 Rotary International President
