Carol Holtgrewe
“Carol Holtgrewe is the most compassionate person I have ever known”. This statement was heard countless times in Carol’s life. She was always thinking about how she could be of help to other people and at the same time, not wanting recognition for her service.
Carol grew up on a farm in southeast Nebraska and was proud of her agricultural heritage. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University and soon married Virgil Holtgrewe on May 8, 1955. During their 67 years of marriage, they traveled to 6 continents and enjoyed every trip.
This great compassionate person passed away June 22, 2022 because of respiratory problems. She was 91 years old and is survived by her husband, Virgil. Other survivors include two daughters, Claire Holtgrewe, Jan (Terry) Ostrom, grandsons Tyler and Lance Ostrom.
Carol was an eager volunteer who was always ready to serve in the church knitting scarves and hats, cooking meals, and completing administrative tasks. Working at the Jeffco Food Bank and driving for Meals on Wheels (for 35 years!) was a passion. The years volunteering at the National Western Stock Show allowed her to enjoy her artistic talents. She was the “behind the scenes” person who would get the job completed.
Working as a draftsperson with the United State Geological Service brought her great joy. These renowned geologists provided the ideas for many of the recreational trips around the world.
She was dedicated to her family and making sure they were all having a good time, listening to a good story, and always positive to all the problems that might come.
Carol Holtgrewe’s Celebration of Life will be held on July 30, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Society, 1901 Ptarmigan Trail, Estes Park, Colorado, 80517. This uplifting casual event with refreshments will be open to all from 3 to 5 pm in the Dining Room of the Senior Apartments. There will be a short service at 3:30 pm to recall how compassionate Carol was about the service she gave to other people. Masks are recommended.
In lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions can be made payable to Crossroad Ministry and sent to the Allnutt Funeral Services, 1302 Graves Ave. Estes Park, Colorado 80517.

Bilingual Story Time Project Is a Great Success!
Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) staff had noticed that when Hispanics/Latinos migrate to the US without knowing how to speak the language nor write it, their children attend school and learn their new language (which is great, and EVICS is promoting that as well), yet it creates a gap in the family’s communication and can lead to a disconnect within the parent-child relationship. When the parent who does not speak English, speaks Spanish to their kids, the kids answer back in English, and the parents may not understand. To support parent-child and the overall family connection EVICS created content and kits built around a different bilingual children’s book each month from January through May 2022 that promoted a family time of listening, reading, and doing a fun craft activity together as family.
Several local organizations worked together to support Estes Valley Investment in Childhood Success (EVICS) with this project.
Rotary Club of Estes Park provided the funding for the project (club funds, club member donations, and matching funds from a Rotary District Grant).
MacDonald Book Shop sold the books for the kits at a discounted price.
Estes Valley Library received socio-emotional backpack(s) that are available for check out
Estes Park Elementary School received 75 bilingual kits, each containing a new bilingual book and activity packet relating to the story, every month for 5 months, and 4 socio-emotional backpacks to be checked out by families from that location.
The kits and materials were distributed at the Estes Park Elementary School, the Estes Valley Library and EVICS. The program focused on the Hispanic Community but it is beneficial to the community in general.
Many people from the Estes community benefited from this project:
75 families from the Elementary School
5 homeschool families from the community
20 community members in general
The project specifically targeted Kindergarten through Second Grade children, with all Kindergarten students at the Estes Park Elementary School being read the book and given the accompanying activity kit to take home. The goal of the program is to support families and create the habit for parents and children to pause, read a book, and do an activity together to support family bonding and communication.
Many families sent notes of appreciation and enthusiasm to EVICS about the project, and have expressed the hope that it can continue in the 2022-2023 school year.
