Making a Sculpture From Clay and Turning It Into Bronze

Gary Williams

Gary Williams was born and raised in Colorado and attended CSU. He spent 8 years in the Air Force and 20 years with the City of Austin Electric Utility as an engineer and manager. When he retired he moved to Highlands Ranch, CO and lived there for 17 years. Then he moved to Estes Park in 2017 and has happily lived there since then.

Gary will be talking about the process of making a sculpture out of clay and then turning it into a bronze sculpture. He will be using a table and may have examples of the various stages of the process. He plans to discuss the various types of sculptures, how they are made. He wants to share what brought him to becoming a sculptor and what he gets out of that particular creative process.

Gary loves to hike and his main hobbies are sculpting and woodcarving. He is married to Robin, has one son, Cody; and they are the proud grandparents of Luke (1yr) and Lily (3Yrs).

March madness is here! Being a college basketball fan I enjoy this month. Throw away the records and the rankings; where any team can upset a higher seed. Underdogs can overcome with a hot streak! Surprise champions can be crowned! Teamwork is rewarded!

When looking at all of the small Rotary clubs across the world, one might wonder what good can we do? But working together as one team, we move mountains! Thank you for your work and participation in Rotary!

March 23rd is our usual committee meeting; however, the Duck Race committee has asked that after lunch we move over to the Quality Inn to sort 8500 ducks! We need everyone’s help! Plan to come!

March 2, 2023 Meeting Notes

President Dennis Gellhaus rang the bell at 12:00 PM.

Announcements:

The club board will meet on March 7 at 5:00 in the Wasson Room at the library.
The Golf Committee will meet at the American Legion on March 9 after the Rotary meeting
Annie Slack filled in for Ron Gordon on information about funding Turkey and Syria relief which can be found in the current Spoke.
The club would like to fund a second shelter box by March 31st.
Contributions to disaster funding may not qualify for Paul Harris credit; we need to investigate further.
Scott Robbins announced that the 35th Annual Duck Race will be held on May 5^th
- Representatives for 56 charitable organizations attended the Duck Race Kickoff Meeting.

Happy Money:

Doug Mann reported that Michelle is doing well after two weeks of chemo. Her main difficulty is lack of energy.
Foundation President Carl Robicheaux reported that the value of the three 4-year Rotary scholarships will increase from $8,000 to $10,000 due to significant fundraising.
Annie Slack was happy and thankful for 13 members; she asked that people refer to this week’s Spoke (March 2nd) if they wanted to know why she was thankful.
Mel Rueppel is thankful for the efforts of Annie Slack and other volunteers to produce the Spoke every week.
Jim Whiteneck reported that the town Mayor took time during the board meeting last week to promote the benefits of the Duck Race. Great job, Scott Robbins and the Duck Race Committee.
President Dennis is happy the Duck Race will happen in 67 (give or take a couple) days.

Don't Miss this Community Service Meeting

The Community Service Committee will meet at 1:00 PM this Thursday, March 9, in person at the American Legion, immediately following the regular noon meeting. We will be considering a request from Estes Park High School teacher Erica Davis for funds needed to build a waterproof storage area for stock lumber and metal, for the high school’s Construction and Welding program. The meeting will take less than an hour. A copy of Erica’s detailed proposal has been sent by email to all Committee members, so please check your Inbox. Please attend if you can.

Please Join Us for a Social at the Memorial Observatory

Our Social will start at the American Legion where we will eat our dinner. Then we will drive individually over to the Observatory so we arrive there at about 6:30 PM. The Observatory is a community resource dedicated to fostering scientific education of children in Estes Park and serving as an educational venue for the community and visitors. Mike Connolly will give us a short presentation on the Observatory and then take a group of us up to see the telescope. Only 10 to15 can go upstairs at a time. Donations to the Memorial Observatory are welcome.

Rotary responds to earthquake that has devastated areas of Turkey and Syria

Result of a 7.8 Earthquake

Disasters can devastate a community without warning, leaving people in urgent need of medical care, housing, and other basics they need to survive. In response to recent earthquakes in the region, The Rotary Foundation invites contributions to the Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund to support member-led projects that provide supplies and health care to people who have been affected. Together, we can offer our support to these communities.

Here's how you can help:

Donate to the Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund.
Fundraise among your colleagues, friends, and family using Raise for Rotary .
Learn how Rotary members are helping.

Your gift will make priority funding available for disaster recovery and support for Turkey and Syria through disaster response grants. When you donate to our Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund now through 31 March 2023, make priority funding available to support our members’ earthquake relief work through disaster response grants. If needs diminish, or if more funds are raised than are requested, surplus contributions may eventually be made available for disasters worldwide.

Incidentally, Rotary’s project partner, ShelterBox, also has an emergency response team assessing the needs in the region and how it can respond. That team is communicating with Rotary district leaders. Rotary’s service partner, Habitat for Humanity International, is also working on its response. We hope that you can help support communities in need with a gift to our Turkey/Syria Disaster Response Fund today.

Ron Gordon, International Services Committee Director, wants to make it as easy as possible for you to donate to this fund. Our Club deadline for receiving all donations is Thursday, March 23. That will allow us to meet the RI receiving deadline of March 31 with expedited delivery. Early donation will be appreciated?
