Housing needs in Estes Park:
A program by the EP Housing Authority

The new director of the Estes Park Housing Authority, Naomi Hawf, will be our speaker this week. She will describe the work of the organization and the need for housing in our town.

Naomi Hawf

The Estes Park Housing Authority is an organization developed from the Loveland Housing Authority with a mission to create and facilitate housing opportunities and services for persons of low to moderate income. The EPHA also supports opportunities for work force housing.

"We are a group of six people that support the people residing in the Estes area, as well as manage and maintain over 200 rental units," Hawf explained. "We manage 38 Housing Choice Vouchers (commonly known as the Section 8 Program). We also have a Down Payment Assistance Program and Home Ownership options."

Hawf came to Estes Park in 2015 from a suburb of Denver. She joined the Housing Authority team in May 2016.

"Rita Kurelja hired me to manage the (then) newly opened Falcon Ridge Apartments and complete administrative functions. Following that position, I accepted the role as Housing Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of all six of our rental properties and become more involved in the additional programs we offer. Here we are today, with my next phase of this adventure as the Executive Director," Hawf said.

Hawf's background includes both private and public sector employment. She has a decade of airline industry experiences as well as six years in the public sector for two municipalities in the Denver Metro Area.

Memorial Service - Jack Dinsmoor
Bill Smith announced that a celebration of Jack Dinsmoor's life has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3 at the Mountain View Bible Fellowship Church. Please keep Ann in your prayers. Also, there will be a sympathy card at the March 1 meeting for all to sign.

Jack died February 20. He was a member of our club and the Sunrise club since 1999 and counted among his Rotary accomplishments the design of the Duck Race cage. Obituary information at http://www.allnutt.com/obituaries/John-Jack-Dinsmoor/#!/Obituary

Red Badge Ceremony
We welcomed Dennis Gelhaus to our club with a Rotary pin, a red new member badge and a round of applause. We thanked Guy Van der Werf for sponsoring him. Dennis intruded himself to the club. We learned he is a South Dakota native who met Guy as a youngster. Dennis is a Methodist minister and, most recently, owner of Assisted Living facilities. He and his wife Robbie will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary in May. They have two sons, Stephen and Aaron.

All are welcome as volunteers!
Help the 2018 Estes Park Duck Race Festival

Everyone knows the Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival is the place to be on the first Saturday in May. But, did you know that you do not have to be a Rotarian to help? That's right, Rotarians! You can invite your friends to help.

Make a splash! Be a Duck Race Festival volunteer this year! Invite your friends and family.

“We welcome volunteers from high school age on up to 105 who can give a few hours on Saturday, May 5. No special skills are required except a positive attitude,” said Scott Thompson, Estes Park Rotary Duck Race Festival volunteer coordinator.

Thompson is looking for volunteers to help with:
  • Setting up and taking down equipment at the start and finish lines
  • Selling duck-themed race memorabilia at Bond Park and Riverside Plaza
  • Supporting operations in Bond Park for charities and organizations
  • Helping to display sponsor ducks
  • Ensuring safety along the riverbanks
  • Keeping the ducks from getting snagged in the river.
“Our 70-member club cannot put on this event without a host of volunteers. It’s a great way to help a great cause, to make new friends, and be part of one of the largest events in Estes Park,” Thompson added.

To sign up as a volunteer, contact Thompson at scott@estesparkrealestate.com or call him at 970-590-9941.

Planning to attend the Rotary District 5440 District Conference? It will be right here in Estes Park on Duck Race Festival weekend. Here's how to register: http://rotary5440.org/event/2018-rotary-district-5440-conference/

Registration for a single attendee:  $135 prior to March 31; $200 after April 1. Registration includes numerous events, but does not include lodging. (Great, because you live here, right?)

Don't delay!

Would you like to show Estes Park Rotary hospitality to a conference attendee? Sign up to host a dinner on Thursday, May 3. See Kathy Groesbeck for details.
Rotary Quote of the Week

RI President-elect Barry Rassin’s theme for 2018-19, Be the Inspiration, asks Rotarians to inspire change in the world and in each other. “I ask all of you to Be the Inspiration to help Rotary move from reaction to action — to take a hard look at the environmental issues that affect health and welfare around the world and do what we can to help.”
