Meet our scholars on May 23
Give them a Rotary send-off to college
This year, our club awarded $34,630 in scholarships to 11 graduating Estes Park High School seniors. The Academic scholarships are primarily funded by the Golf Tournament. Memorial scholarships (Carver, Carmichael, Arichibald, Coffman and Kuhns) resulted from donations to our foundation following the death of a club member.
Our scholars have been invited to our next meeting so you can meet and congratulate them. They are: Annalise Basch, Fazeel Bhatti, Molly Morgan: Academic Scholarships; Megan Miller, Anna Rohwedder, Carver Vocational Scholarships; Armando Avitia Fernandez, Camdyn Arnold, Nathan Zurfluh, Carmichael Memorial Scholarships; Sophie Greenway, Archibald Scholarship; Susanna Harrison, Coffman Business Scholarship; and Chloe Burke, Kuhns Memorial Scholarship.
In total, the class of 2019 received $125,000 in scholarships at the May 15 program.
Our 2019 Scholarship Recipients
Dave and Harriette presented awards. Lindi Carmichael presented Bruce's memorial scholarships.
May 16 meeting notes
President Dave Evans called the meeting to order at noon and reminded all present that our next meeting is at Nicky'son Fall River Road, NOT at The Ridgeline Hotel. Karol Rinehartt added that Beef Stroganoff will be served.
Dave invited Laura, our Rotary Exchange student, to give her monthly update. She said she is headed to Nebraska for the district conference, is sad that soccer has ended, is not excited about upcoming final exams and will miss all of her new friends. Trudy Collar gave an invocation, Spring Thoughts. Gordon Ulrickson served as greeter in his quest to graduate from the New Member red ribbon badge. Dave led us in singing "In the Good Old Summertime" after he shared his extensive research into the etymology of the noun, "tootsie-wootsie." Jack Overly introduced the following visiting Rotarians: Bill Kehl of Greeley, Returning Sojourner Dave VanWert and Mel Rueppel of Sunrise. Guests included Susan Taylor, Rick's daughter; and Steve Detkowski and Tom Hobbs of Property Pruners.
Happy Money
Larry Williams was happy to have two new, working knees. Did you know that he is now 1.5" taller?
Doug Mann was happy to share the history of the Rotary Scooter Table and give "Scooter Sue" Fereday's $3 to celebrate that our club will send three students to RYLA this year.
Trudy Collar was delighted to announce her impending trip to Tennessee to pick up her 7-week old standard poodle puppy.
Jack Overly was gracious is acknowledging Karol Rinehart's efforts to keep us fed and happy every week.
Carl Robicheaux was relieved that the town is repaving Elkhorn this month instead of next.
Tom Gardner was pleased to have spent time with Ron Kuhn's son this week, when Jeff visited to present the scholarship in Ron's name.
Jim Austin was grateful for the medical skills of our speaker, who initially attended to Jim's Race Day injury. Jim has had two recent surgeries and is on the mend.
Bill Solms was happy to announce that Carl Robicheaux will be his partner in next month's Rotary Golf Tournament. He is also grateful that Larry Williams, while recovering from a double knee replacement, stayed connected with the club and answered his email.
Announcements
Bill Smith reminded us that services for Roger Thorp would be tomorrow at 11 a.m. and Dave noted that a reception would follow.
Tara Moenning thanked the club for its support of scholarships and shared that Lindi Carmichael and Jeff Kuhns attended the program at the school. She said the 11 students have been invited to meet the club at next week's meeting.
Bruce Brown thanked Tara for all she does for the scholarship program.
Jon Thompson announced that he picked up a cell phone in the parking lot and is seeking its owner.
Program
Kevin Mullin introduced our speaker, Dr. John Meyer, chief of staff at EPH and co-director of the ER. Dr. Meyer presented an informative program on how best to avoid accidentally poisoning your visiting grandchildren. Some of his major points:
Poison Control - Call 1-800-222-1222 any time!
Every 13 seconds someone calls Poison Control.
There were 2.1 million human poison exposures in 2017.
99.4% of children under 6 who ingest poison do so unintentionally.
Among the top poison exposures in 2017: cosmetics and personal care products, cleaning substances, analgesics, toys and foreign bodies.
48 children died from ingesting analgesics in 2017; 41 from fumes/gases/vapors, 15 from batteries, 10 from antidepressants, and 9 each from alcohol and cleaning products.
Keep dangerous items, from medications to detergent pods, stored where grandkids can't reach them.
The "One Pill Can Kill" list includes oral hypoglycemics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, Immodium, aspirin.
Dr. Meyer predicted that marijuana edibles would soon join the list of Top 10 calls to Poison Control or ER visits. While not fatal, still dangerous to tots.

Quote of the Week for Our Scholars
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
